Abstract

The diversity of students’ interests, readiness, and learning profiles presents challenges in teaching complex biological concepts such as the immune system. Differentiated learning offers a strategy to address these differences by adapting content, processes, and learning products. This study aimed to develop and evaluate a differentiated learning-based electronic module (e-module) for undergraduate biology students. This study employed Educational Design Research based on the Plomp and Nieveen model, consisting of three phases: preliminary research, prototyping, and assessment. Data were collected through needs analysis questionnaires, expert validation sheets, student response questionnaires, and learning outcome assessments. The preliminary phase indicated that 82.6% of students strongly needed e-module-based learning materials. In the prototyping phase, the module achieved high validity scores from material experts (91.2%, very valid), media experts (79.16%, fairly valid), and practitioners (89%, very valid). Small-group testing showed very positive student responses (87%, very good). In the assessment phase involving undergraduate students, the average learning outcome was moderate, with variation across performance levels. The results indicate that the developed e-module is feasible and has the potential to support student engagement and may contribute to conceptual understanding. However, improvements in usability, assessment design, and the duration of implementation are required to enhance its effectiveness.  Keywords: Differentiated Instruction, E-Learning Module, Immune System, Educational Design Research

Abstract

Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF) are widely recognized as biological agents that improve nutrient uptake, particularly phosphorus, and enhance plant adaptation under suboptimal soil conditions. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of different inoculant sources on the early vegetative growth of corn under a conventional cultivation system. A randomized complete block design was used with five inoculant treatments: unsterilized soil, sterilized soil, tidal soil, local tidal AMF propagules, and commercial mycorrhizae, with four replications. The observed variables included plant height, leaf number, stem diameter, and leaf greenness at 2, 3, and 4 weeks after planting (WAP). The results showed that inoculant source significantly affected plant height, leaf number, and stem diameter at 4 WAP. Leaf greenness was not significantly affected by treatment at all observation periods. Tidal soil treatment resulted in the highest plant height (53.92 cm), leaf number (6.58 leaves), and stem diameter (43 mm) at 4 WAP. Growth in unsterilized and sterilized soil treatments was relatively similar. Lower performance of local AMF propagules and commercial mycorrhizae may be associated with differences in inoculum compatibility; however, root colonization was not quantitatively measured in this study. These findings indicate that tidal soil has potential as a biological inoculant source for early corn growth under conventional cultivation.  Keywords: Biological Inoculation, Root Symbiosis, Plant Physiology, Soil Fertility

Abstract

Learning invertebrate classification requires intensive interactivity that often overloads students’ working memory and leads to superficial understanding. From a Cognitive Load Theory (CLT) perspective, this issue is worsened by instructional media with complex, unfocused visuals that increase extraneous cognitive load. This study developed and evaluated a CLT-based notecard media to manage cognitive load and support meaningful schema construction. Using an R&D approach, the study included needs analysis, CLT-informed design, expert validation, and limited field testing with 39 senior high school students. Data was collected through expert validation instruments, analysis of students’ classification records, Paas mental effort ratings, and qualitative responses. Results indicate that the CLT-based notecard media align with CLT principles and are feasible for instructional use, although refinements are needed to improve readability and visual signaling. Students’ mental effort levels were generally low to moderate, suggesting that the media may provide manageable cognitive support during classification tasks. Overall, the findings suggest that CLT-based notecard learning media may support early observation and initial schema development in biological classification learning.  Keywords: Cognitive Load Theory, Invertebrate Classification, Notecard Learning Media, Schema Construction, Working Memory

Abstract

Eco-enzymes derived from spice-plant residues may provide an environmentally friendly source of antibacterial compounds. This study evaluated eco-enzymes prepared from nutmeg fruit (BP), nutmeg leaves (DP), eucalyptus leaves (DK), and clove leaves (DC) using a 1:3:10 ratio of coconut sugar, plant residue, and water. Fermentation was conducted anaerobically for 90 days, and the products were screened against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli by disk diffusion at 10% concentration. Two commercial 70% alcohol antiseptics served as positive controls. After fermentation, all eco-enzymes were acidic with a final pH of approximately 4.8 and showed distinct sensory profiles. The clove-leaf eco-enzyme produced the largest mean inhibition zones against E. coli (14.22 ± 0.31 mm) and S. aureus (12.25 ± 0.41 mm). One-way ANOVA indicated that treatment significantly affected inhibition zones against E. coli (p < 0.001) and S. aureus (p < 0.001). HPLC screening suggested myristicin as dominant in BP, cineole in DK, and eugenol in DC. Overall, the results indicate preliminary antibacterial potential, especially for clove-leaf eco-enzyme, and support further studies using concentration gradients, MIC/MBC assays, and fully specified chromatographic methods.
