Abstract

This research focuses on Johan Galtung’s theory of the culture of peace. Based on his thoughts, the problems in this study are: 1). What is Johan Galtung's concept of a culture of peace? 2). The methods and approaches used by Johan Galtung in dealing with conflicts so as to get a culture of peace? 3). Where is the relevance of Johan Galtung's thoughts to the cultural conditions of peace in Indonesia? His findings, Johan Galtung 's thoughts on a culture of peace without war and physical violence as a focus on preventing violent conflicts and wars between and within countries. Johan Galtung added the need for the abolition of construction to the need to eliminate physical violence and war. Indonesia's active participation in world peace is also realized in the positive reality of peace, namely the realization of a sense of security and economic justice from the existing system to eliminate racial, ethnic and religious discrimination based on social. This is supported by the philosophical existence of a culture of peace in several regions in Indonesia, namely 1). Pela Gandong in Maluku as an alliance system between villages based on a pledge of blood friendship, 2). In Javanese society, the term, namely tepa selira, shows us not to do something to other people, nor do we want to be treated like that, 3). In the Fak-Fak community, it is known as the motto of one three stone stove, 4). philosophic culture of Hambor in Manggarai through traditional rituals, 5). Chinese cultural philosophy, namely Ping. To prevent conflict in Indonesia, it is necessary to provide training and education in a culture of peace through schools and campuses in order to support the business climate in this country.

Abstract

Contact among languages enables speakers to borrow particular words from one language to another language. This kind of loanword occasionally brings the cultural values of the borrowed language. Related to this phenomenon, this research aims (1) to describe the phonological change of English loanwords from Bahasa Indonesia, and (2) to describe the cultural elements brought by English loanwords from Bahasa Indonesia. The data for this research was obtained from a book entitled Indonesian Phrasebook, written by Wagner (2006). The Oxford Advanced Learners’ Dictionary (OALD) was used to examine the accuracy of the data. The results show that phonological change occurred in some lexical units as an effect of phonological adaptation of the language, such as lenition, apocope, syncope, sound addition, and vowel breaking. The nativization of Bahasa Indonesia happened in vowels and consonants due to phonological adaptation. Furthermore, the loanwords of Bahasa Indonesia also function as a medium of culture to globally introduce Indonesian culture.

Abstract

Conflict is part of human life. No one can get rid of it. Some conflicts end in good resolution, some end in bad resolution, and some end in tragedy. Antigone, the main character, is encountering a dilemma of whether to keep on the conscience of burying her brother or to obey her king’s edict forbidding her to bury him otherwise death sentence she has to bear. This inner conflict represents the power relation between Antigone and the king. Foucault proposes that power relation comprises the productivity of power and the constitution of subjectivity. He also says that resistance is an endemic fact in the world of power relations. Furthermore, Kabeer states that the power of women signifies the ability of women to make choices. In determining choices, Antigone experiences inner conflict, and thus, she encounters a double struggle, i.e., against herself and against Creon, the king. With the knowledge that conscience or heaven's values are higher than man’s rule or earth’s values, Antigone seizes her power to deal with her conflicts. The conflict between Antigone and Creon, which is first between heaven and earth laws, turns out to be a conflict mostly covered by self-pride. This contestation of power leads her to agony and suicide, and this confirms that inner conflicts in power relations may end in tragedy.

Abstract

The tale of the Sleeping Beauty is still one of the well-loved and popular fairy tales among children, especially girls. The story has been adapted into various versions but has not changed essentially—it is always about a princess saved from a curse, about good versus bad. Due to the simple nature of the story, most literary researchers no longer deem this story a valuable source of data anymore although there are still more to uncover from the fairy tale. This study attempts to examine how the female characters in the story are represented from the structural semiotics perspective using two theories proposed by A. J. Greimas, namely the Actantial Model and the Narrative Trajectory. The qualitative method is applied to interpretatively divide the story into different major events, from which an actantial diagram and a trajectory can be made before the representation is drawn. The findings suggest that the female characters in the story are mostly placed as an object of the actantial diagram and a goal in the trajectory; this means that the story puts the female characters in passive roles that comply to the traditional gender roles and female stereotypes.

Abstract

Children with special needs have taken wider attentions in research, especially in finding solutions of how to improve their abilities in communication. The purpose of this research is to identify the challenges and barriers in speech production in English by students with hearing impairments in Pangkalpinang City. Investigation and documentation were the main stages in collecting data. The data were studied using a descriptive method with a qualitative approach. Based on the foundation of phonetic theory by Collins and Mess (2019) regarding speech production and the character of children with hearing impairment by Dennis Fry, this research is aimed at analyzing the sounds produced by children with special needs. Experimental observation using the Praat voice analyzer was carried out on students with three types of disabilities: students with vision impairment, hearing impaired, and mental or intellectual disability. The observation results showed that students with hearing impairments (partial and total deafness) were the main concern as their abilities in perceiving and producing speech gave them opportunities to communicate in English despite the barriers, they had to face in pronouncing the words. As conclusion, students with hearing impairment both partial and total deafness produced their speech based on other vocal tracts due to their disability, and certain treatment in speech production should be suggested especially the phonemes involving internal articulators, including alveolar, velar, post-alveolar and nasal sounds. Proximities made in speech showed possibilities to refine their pronunciation.

Abstract

The case study in this study used a subject named KH with mild intellectual disability which was seen through the subject's morphosyntactic abilities. In this study using the assessment method to determine the ability of KH in morphology and syntax when speaking in everyday life. The researcher asked KH to tell KH's daily activities and was asked to retell from the available pictures. From this research it can be concluded that KH in making sentences is capable and in accordance with sentence elements such as Subj-Pred-Obj-Ket-Conj. But in terms of morphological abilities, KH more often uses Pred with basic words in the sentences that are spoken than with affixed verbs. So that in that case it can cause confusion of meaning

Abstract

TThis research article is about the use of translation strategy namely explicitation in the translation of a novel from Indonesian into English. The data source is an Indonesian novel entitled Lelaki Harimau written by Eka Kurniawan and its English translation, Man Tiger. The novel creates commands and critics regarding its content as well as its language use. This makes the novel unique. The uniqueness in the source language text needs extra works to do in delivering the closest natural equivalent in the target language text. Untranslatability is no longer issue as there are strategies of translation that can be applied, one of them is explicitation. The explicitation strategy used is the one proposed by Klaudy. Using descriptive qualitative method, this research is aimed at revealing the kind of information being explicitated, the forms of explicitation used, and the semantic information of the words explicitated. The results show that the kind of information is both cultural and non-cultural, and the forms of explicitation identified are all five of them and semantically all the words being explicitated become clearer, specific, and more informative.

Abstract

Podcasting has become a common phenomenon among Indonesian youth which can draw pragmatic attention. This study investigates the types of deixis used in Raditya Dika’s podcast and analyzes factors that influence its uses. The data of this qualitative research were verbal communication in some selected episodes of podcast programs. Furthermore, the data were analyzed by Levinson’s (1983) about deixis use and Holmes’ (2013) about factor. Analysis found four types of deixis; person, time, discourse, and place. The most dominant used was person deixis with 644 occurrences (86%) to show knowledge-sharing. The findings indicate that the use of different deixis was due to some factors such as social distance or solidarity, status or power, formality, and function.

Abstract

Abortion is a complex issue. On the one hand, abortion is an illegal act according to positive law and is prohibited by religion in Indonesia. On the other hand, abortion is a shortcut to solving unwanted pregnancies by married and unmarried couples. This study aims to see how the media frames news about illegal abortion, how positive law regulates this act and what the triggers doing illegal abortion. This research is qualitative research with a content analysis approach. The results of the study show that the media tends to be neutral by not taking sides between the perpetrators and the victims. This research also reveals the fact that the high demand of the Indonesian people for an illegal abortion service is at least triggered by two things, the legal system, and social norms applied in Indonesia. The legal system prohibiting abortion in Indonesia is incapable to prevent and provide a deterrent effect against perpetrators of abortion criminalization. In addition, Indonesian society’s system of social norms is very sensitive to immoral cases, such as pregnancy out of wedlock. As a result, many pregnant women who are out of wedlock choose to hide their pregnancies and then secretly carry out illegal abortions
