Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of humor, particularly in the form of stand-up comedy, as a medium of socio-political critique in Indonesia. The research data consist of thirteen excerpts from stand-up comedy monologues, analyzed using Critical Discourse Analysis with Fairclough’s model, which includes textual, discursive, and socio-cultural analysis. The study focuses on the use of figurative language such as metaphor, irony, paradox, and satire as discursive strategies to uncover hidden power relations embedded in political practices. The findings reveal that representations of professions such as foremen, laborers, project supervisors, and canteen workers are transformed into symbols that reflect structures of power, practices of nepotism, patronage, and injustices within the political system. Humor is shown to effectively expose serious issues such as political dynasties, structural inequalities, the erosion of meritocratic principles, and moral hypocrisy, presented in a manner that is light yet incisive. The stand-up comedy functions not only as entertainment but also as a counter-discourse that provides a safe, inclusive, and reflective space for society to critique political realities. The study concludes that humor plays a significant role in strengthening public awareness and can be regarded as a form of symbolic resistance against the status quo in contemporary democracy.

Abstract

The transition from the New Order to the Reformasi period in Indonesia not only reshaped the political landscape but also influenced the emergence of digital literature dynamics. This article examines the early development of internet literature as part of the transformation of literary practices within digital culture. Using a historical method, this study analyzes early digital literary traces through platforms such as mailing lists, blogs, and online literary magazines. The findings show that these platforms not only served as alternative publishing channels but also fostered a participatory ecosystem that redefined the boundaries of literary production and reception. Characteristics such as user interactivity, open discussions, and decentralized distribution became key features of this literary space. This study argues that the formative stage of Indonesian internet literature marked the beginning of a new literary culture, one that was digitally based, community-oriented, and distinct from conventional print culture. These developments contributed significantly to the diversification and democratization of literary expression in contemporary Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the influence of implementing the Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model in combination with the Google Sites platform on students’ essay writing skills, while taking into account their level of reasoning ability. The study was prompted by the observation that many students continue to face challenges in producing coherent, logical, and argumentative essays in the context of Indonesian language learning. Adopting a quasi-experimental design with a 2×2 factorial model, the research involved 66 students from SMA Negeri 10 Samarinda and MA Negeri 2 Samarinda during the 2024/2025 academic year. Data were obtained through objective tests to assess reasoning ability and performance-based assessments to evaluate essay writing skills. The findings reveal that the integration of the PjBL model with Google Sites exerts a significant positive effect on students’ essay writing performance. Moreover, reasoning ability was found to significantly influence outcomes, with students demonstrating higher reasoning skills achieving superior writing results. An interaction effect between the applied learning model and students’ reasoning ability was also identified, indicating a combined impact on essay writing performance. These results underscore the potential of integrating project-based learning with digital technologies as an effective strategy for enhancing students’ writing competence in language education.

Abstract

This research examines the ways in which Indonesian local literary narratives formulate and perpetuate cultural identity amid globalizations. It specifically examines the symbolic representations in Entrok by Okky Madasari and Laut Bercerita by Leila S. Chudori through Roland Barthes’ semiotic framework, focusing on denotation, connotation, and myth. The study utilizes a qualitative text analysis approach, relying on comprehensive readings of the novels and supplemented by secondary literature. Symbols like the Entrok (a traditional Javanese brassiere) and the sea are identified and coded using a deductive method based on Barthes’ categories. The results show that Entrok criticizes patriarchal control and class-based oppression by changing the meaning of everyday objects. “Laut Bercerita,” on the other hand, shows the sea as a sacred place of ecological awareness and collective resistance. These symbols function on various semiotic levels, demonstrating literature’s role as a medium for cultural negotiation and ideological critique. The research finds that Indonesian local literature is essential for maintaining cultural resilience and identity development, providing educators and policymakers with effective methods to enhance cultural awareness through storytelling.
