Abstract

This study aims to develop Toonly-based animated videos to support the teaching of pre-intermediate Japanese grammar (Bunpō Shōchūkyū) in Indonesia and to evaluate their feasibility. The research employed the Multimedia Development Life Cycle (MDLC), consisting of six stages. The six stages are concept, design, material collection, assembly, testing, and distribution. A total of twelve animated instructional videos were developed based on grammar points from Chapters 38 to 49 of Minna no Nihongo II. The feasibility testing involved an alpha test dan beta test. Alpha test conducted by a media expert and a content expert. Beta test conducted by the course lecturer and six second-semester students from the Japanese Language Education Study Program at Universitas Pendidikan Ganesha. Data were collected through mixed-format questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. The media expert gave a score of 57.75 (Excellent), while the content expert gave 50.25 (Good). The beta test conducted by the lecturer yielded a score of 109 (Excellent), and the small-group test yielded 106.6 (Good). These results indicate that the developed animated videos are feasible and suitable as supplementary learning materials for teaching Bunpō Shōchūkyū using Minna no Nihongo II at Universitas Pendidikan Ganesha. Overall, these findings highlight the potential of animation-based media to make Japanese grammar learning more engaging, accessible, and meaningful for students.

Abstract

This study discusses the needs of the main character Akito Hayasaka in the Japanese film entitled Yomei Ichinen no Boku ga Yomei Hantoshi no Kimi to Deatta Hanashi. The purpose of this study is to describe the needs of Akito Hayasaka through a literary psychology approach using Henry Murray's needs theory. The method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive method. The data for this study are dialogues and scenes of Akito Hayasaka's character. Using the free listening technique, data were collected by watching the film, observing conversations between characters, and the speech acts of the main character. The note-taking technique is an advanced technique for recording data that will be used in the study. Then the data were processed, classified based on Henry Murray's needs theory, and conclusions were drawn. The results of the study show that Akito Hayasaka has 10 needs, namely abasement (feelings of inferiority), understanding (interpersonal interest), deference (admiring work), affiliation (making friends), defendance (defending oneself from criticism), nurturance (pleasing weak people), achievement (having life motivation), rejection (rejecting offers), dominance (influencing others), and counteraction (accepting reality).

Abstract

This research is about the psychoanalytic study of Henry Murray on the character Okkotsu Yuuta in the anime Jujutsu Kaisen 0, using Henry Murray's personology theory. According to Henry Murray, needs are closely related to a person's psychological condition. Henry Murray categorized 20 essential needs related to psychological needs in a person. Using a qualitative descriptive method with a literary approach. Data was collected thru scenes and dialog depicting the psychological aspects of the character Okkotsu Yuuta. The anime Jujutsu Kaisen 0 tells the story of a teenager named Okkotsu Yuuta, who has been haunted by a cursed spirit named Rika since childhood. Yuuta cannot control Rika's cursed spirit, which is attached to him, and it always gets out of control whenever Yuuta is in a dangerous situation. One day, Yuuta met Gojo Satoru, the strongest sorcerer, who invited Yuuta to join Jujutsu High School so that Yuuta could control his powers and also Rika's cursed spirit. This study's goal is to use personology theory to ascertain Okkotsu Yuuta's needs in the anime Jujutsu Kaisen 0. The author found that the character Okkotsu Yuuta has 9 needs that reflect his behavior and emotions when facing inner conflict and his struggle to control the cursed spirit Orimoto Rika. It can be concluded that the character Okkotsu Yuuta has needs for abasement, achievement, affiliation, aggression, counteraction, deference, dominance, nurturance, and rejection.

Abstract

Hanabi taikai is a festival held annually in Japan during the summer. Initially, hanabi taikai was used as a means of praying for people who died due to famine caused by crop failure and cholera, but its role has shifted to visual entertainment, although hanabi is not just visual entertainment it also holds other meanings from a philosophical and social perspective. The purpose of this research is to explore the meaning contained in hanabi taikai from philosophical and social perspectives. This research uses a qualitative method with semi-structured interviews, field observations, and document studies as data collection techniques. Data was obtained from interview results, personal documentation, YouTube videos, and TikTok videos. The results of this study indicate that from a philosophical perspective, hanabi has meaning as a temporary beauty and a beauty that can be enjoyed simply. From a social perspective, hanabi has meaning as a means to strengthen togetherness and social harmony. Hanabi reminds us of transience, simplicity, and the importance of social harmony in daily life.

Abstract

This applied linguistics study aims to describe translation shifts based on Catford’s (1978) theory, including level shifts and category shifts (structure shifts, class shifts, unit shifts, and intra-system shifts), as one of the translation strategies found in the classic Japanese novel Kaki no Ki no Aru Ie and its Indonesian translation Rumah Pohon Kesemek. This research offers novelty, as studies on transposition from Japanese into Indonesian novels remain limited. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the data consist of narrative texts drawn from the two versions of the novel as primary sources. The data were analyzed through a translational equivalence method combined with syntactic functional and categorical analysis to identify the types of shifts employed. Results show that among 278 data items, level shifts and all types of category shifts occur in the novel, with some cases classified into more than one shift type. Level shifts involve changes from grammar to lexis and from lexis to grammar, often realized through affixation. Among the four category shifts, structure shifts are the most frequent due to differences in standard sentence patterns between the SL and TL (SOV–SVO and MH-HM). It is concluded that transposition plays an important role in Japanese–Indonesian translation, and translators need strong understanding of both grammatical systems to produce natural and acceptable translations for Indonesian readers. These findings may serve as a reference for future studies with more specific data selection criteria, such as complex sentences in the SL rendered as multiple sentences in the TL.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the level of awareness, usage, and perceptions of digital tools for Japanese pronunciation learning among teachers, students, and alumni in Indonesia, and to analyze the challenges associated with their integration in both classroom and self-directed learning. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative surveys with qualitative interviews involving 122 participants from diverse educational backgrounds and Japanese learning experiences. The findings show that while 58.2% of respondents are aware of digital tools for Japanese learning, only a small portion are familiar with pronunciation-specific tools. Quizlet, NHK Pronunciation, and OJAD were the most frequently mentioned, yet around 40% reported no awareness of any pronunciation-focused applications. Major obstacles identified include limited access to devices or stable internet (26%), lack of teacher guidance (16%), and usability difficulties (12%). Despite infrequent use, 94% of respondents perceived digital pronunciation tools as helpful, particularly those that provide native speaker voice samples and pitch or intonation visualization. These insights highlight the importance of leveraging phonetic theory—particularly in relation to pitch-accent perception and auditory-visual feedback—to refine pronunciation instruction through technology. Overall, the study underscores the need for improved teacher training, stronger classroom integration, and the development of more accessible and user-friendly pronunciation tools tailored to Indonesian learners’ needs.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze errors found in the translation of passive and causative sentences from Indonesian to Japanese by students at three universities in Padang. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method, by analyzing the translation of passive and causative sentences from Indonesian to Japanese written by 66 Japanese Literature students from three universities in Padang. The theory used is the theory of language errors from Pateda, which states that language errors can occur at the phonological, morphological, semantic, and syntactic levels. Errors found in the translation of passive and causative sentences are found in sentence structure, word choice, the use of postpositions and posverbs. In sentence structure, errors are caused by differences in the construction of passive and causative sentences in Indonesian and Japanese. In word choice, errors are caused by Japanese having several words with the same meaning. Errors in the use of postpositions (auxiliary words) and posverbs (auxiliary verbs) occur in their use, which is not in accordance with the structure and rules of Japanese. From the findings obtained, it can be concluded that errors made by Japanese language learners are due to a lack of understanding of translation and the rules in Japanese. This should require more in-depth explanation and practice regarding translation from Indonesian into Japanese.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal how the personality structure of the character Eikichi Onizuka is portrayed in the drama Great Teacher Onizuka (2012). The drama depicts Onizuka as a teacher and former motorcycle gang member who employs unconventional approaches in guiding his students. This research adopts Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic framework of personality structure and dynamics, which encompasses the functions of the id, ego, and superego, along with psychological processes such as inner conflict and defense mechanisms that shape individual behavior. The study employs a descriptive qualitative method, with data consisting of dialogue and visual material in the form of screenshots taken from Great Teacher Onizuka. Data were collected through attentive viewing and systematic note-taking, producing 8 findings that illustrate the structure and dynamics of the character’s personality. The results demonstrate that Onizuka’s behavior emerges from the dynamic interaction between the spontaneous impulses of the id, the ego’s regulation of reality, and the moral considerations governed by the superego. Within this dynamic, the ego functions as the dominant element that balances instinctual impulses and moral demands.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the intertextual relationship between the novels Jepun Negerinya Hiroko and Kuantar ke Gerbang, including comparisons of the main male characters, themes, plots, meanings, and points of view in both novels. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method with an intertextual approach. Data were collected through library techniques and validated using theoretical and data triangulation. Analysis results reveal that both novels share similarities and differences in their structural elements. The similarities include the selfish attitude of the main male characters, themes addressing social problems encompassing human life in macro and micro aspects that influence marital relationships, point of view using first-person singular style where in Jepun Negerinya Hiroko the narrator participates as a character in the story, while in Kuantar ke Gerbang the narrator exists outside the story but understands the characters' feelings, and an overall meaning of unity among people. In Jepun Negerinya Hiroko, universalism is emphasized to unite different ethnic groups through the slogan promoting freedom, brotherhood, and equality, whereas Kuantar ke Gerbang highlights nationalism through youth unity. The differences between the two novels include the main male character being introverted in Jepun Negerinya Hiroko and extroverted in Kuantar ke Gerbang, the role of the main male character as antagonist versus protagonist, the central theme concerning mixed marriage between different cultural and national backgrounds compared to the spirit of national independence struggle, and the use of flashback plot positioned at the end of the story in Jepun Negerinya Hiroko.
