Abstract

This study uses a qualitative descriptive method. Data collection was carried out through a questionnaire compiled based on indicators from the research objectives. The questionnaire was distributed via Google Form to 18 respondents who were active students and were undergoing an internship program. To find out about the influence of Japanese culture courses (Nihonjijo and Bijinesu Nihongo) on the adaptability of internship students in Japan, the author asked 10 questions to students of the Japanese Language Study Program at Widyatama University who were undergoing an internship program in Japan. The selection of respondents was carried out purposively, with the criteria that they had taken the courses in question and were directly involved in the world of work through internships. The data obtained from the questionnaire were analyzed using content analysis techniques, namely by grouping answers based on relevant themes or categories. Of the 18 respondents who were undergoing an internship program, most respondents wanted to go to Japan after getting to know Japanese culture more deeply through Nihonjijou lectures. Likewise with Bijinesu Nihongo lectures, most students felt a significant influence on the process of adapting and adjusting to the work environment and culture of Japanese society while undergoing an internship program.

Abstract

The growing use of ChatGPT in Japanese translation highlights the need to evaluate the quality of its output in comparison with human-produced translations. This study examines how differences in translation techniques, as defined by Molina and Albir (2002), and translation methods proposed by Newmark (1988), influence pragmatic meaning and illocutionary functions in assertive speech acts. The data consist of conversational texts from Minna no Nihongo 2, which were analyzed using a qualitative descriptive approach based on the applied techniques, methods, and assertive categories. The findings show that the original textbook translation tends to employ semantic translation supported by amplification and modulation, whereas ChatGPT more frequently produces communicative translation through reduction and adaptation. The study concludes that although ChatGPT can generate clear and communicative translations, it does not consistently preserve the pragmatic nuances and politeness features characteristic of Japanese.

Abstract

This study aims to explain how visual literacy using digital photos supports students’ reading comprehension and cross-cultural understanding in a dokkai (reading) course. Visual literacy in this study was implemented through digital photos and texts with a focus on traditional Japanese and Indonesian games, which provided a meaningful cultural context for comparison. Digital photos were obtained from online sources and were used to help students observe traditional play (dentoteki na asobi) and connect vocabulary, textual meaning, and cultural elements. Visual literacy provided initial support for reading, stimulated prediction and interpretation, and encouraged critical thinking about cross-cultural phenomena. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method to examine how digital photos were used as a dokkai learning medium and how visual literacy supported students’ exploration of cross-cultural understanding. The results showed that students were able to identify similarities and differences between traditional Japanese and Indonesian games, appreciated the cultural value of traditional play, and developed critical awareness of shifts between traditional and modern play culture.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the understanding of Japanese work culture among prospective Indonesian migrant workers to Japan who participate in training programs at LPK Wisma Berkah Sejahtera. The focus of the study includes the forms of work culture training provided, the participants’ level of understanding of Japanese work culture values, and the factors that hinder the process of cultural understanding. This research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative methods. Qualitative data were obtained through structured non-participant observation and in-depth interviews with instructors and training participants, while quantitative data were collected through a Likert-scale questionnaire measuring five indicators of Japanese work culture: work discipline, teamwork and communication, politeness and respect, honesty and responsibility, and hard work and dedication. The results indicate that LPK Wisma Berkah Sejahtera has implemented Japanese work culture training in a relatively comprehensive manner through chorei activities, integrated Japanese language learning, interview training (mensetsu), dedicated Japanese culture classes, and interpersonal skills training. The participants’ level of understanding ranges from moderate to good, with the highest levels observed in the aspects of honesty and responsibility, politeness and respect, and teamwork and communication. However, gaps in general understanding of Japanese work culture remain, along with several obstacles, including the predominance of theoretical training materials, language barriers, differences in communication styles, mental and physical preparedness, and limited instructor resources.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of digital Kanji teaching materials in improving N5-level Kanji reading skills among beginner learners of Japanese. The primary objective is to investigate how the integration of digital learning resources influences students’ ability to recognize and comprehend Kanji characters at the N5 level. The study employed a quasi-experimental design using a pre-test and post-test approach to measure the extent to which the independent variable (digital teaching materials) affected the dependent variable (Kanji reading skills). The findings revealed a significant improvement in students’ N5-level Kanji reading performance after the implementation of digital materials. These results suggest that digital teaching materials not only increase learner engagement but also promote a deeper understanding of Kanji through interactive and multimodal learning features. This research contributes to the field of Japanese language education by emphasizing the pedagogical value of technology integration, which supports the development of more effective and engaging instructional strategies applicable across diverse educational contexts.

Abstract

Communication between the shafu (rickshaw pullers) and tourists riding the jinrikisha often involves the occurrence of code-mixing. This study investigates code-mixing as an integral component of jinrikisha-based tourist communication, with a particular focus on the informal yet impactful role of the shafu as linguistic and cultural mediators. Situated within the sociolinguistic framework of tourism discourse, this research adopts a qualitative-descriptive methodology to explore the communication strategies employed by the shafu in the jinrikisha tourism industry. Special attention is given to recorded instances of code-mixing in order to analyze the multilingual strategies used to negotiate meaning, build rapport, and enhance the overall tourist experience. The findings reveal that the linguistic adaptability demonstrated by the shafu reflects a form of localized communicative competence shaped by the demands of global tourism and context-specific language ideologies. The utterances produced by the shafu are not random or incidental; rather, they are shaped by repeated interactions with tourists, the desire to be understood, and the necessity to appear competent and welcoming within a competitive tourism market.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of using the Wayground digital quiz platform in teaching Japanese vocabulary in the Kaiwa course for students of the Japanese Language Education Study Program at the Faculty of Language and Arts, Universitas Negeri Manado. This study used a mixed-methods approach. The subjects were 32 second-semester students in the 2024-2025 academic year. Data collection was conducted through interviews, documentation, and objective tests. The results showed that the use of the Wayground digital platform increased learning motivation and material comprehension, with the success rate reaching 81% for the class. Out of 32 students, 7 students achieved a score of 100%, 6 students achieved 96%, 7 students achieved 76%, 5 students achieved 72%, 4 students achieved 68%, 1 student achieved 60%, and the lowest scores of 50% and 38% were achieved by 1 student each. The analysis shows that there is an increase in the accuracy of vocabulary mastery after using Wayground. However, some students require additional support due to limited digital literacy, technical issues, and connectivity constraints. This study highlights the importance of integrating technology with hands-on guidance to improve students' learning motivation and vocabulary acquisition, which in turn will improve their Japanese speaking ability.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the linguistic and sociolinguistic competence as well as language adaptation strategies of Indonesian vocational students participating in internship programs in Japan. The study is theoretically grounded in Intercultural Communicative Competence (Byram, 1997) and Communication Accommodation Theory (Giles, 1991). A qualitative-embedded survey approach was employed, utilizing questionnaire data and thematic analysis from 52 respondents out of a total population of 70 internship students. The findings indicate that while students are generally able to perform basic workplace communication, they experience notable difficulties in using formal Japanese, particularly keigo and industry-specific expressions. Online learning experiences also influence the development of language competence and cultural awareness. The study concludes that Japanese language competence and adaptive communication strategies play an important role in enhancing workplace performance and facilitating intercultural integration.

Abstract

This research aims to explore the effectiveness of using Japanese songs as a medium of learning to improve the mastery of knowledge and skills in the Japanese language among children at the beginner level. Considering the challenges faced by beginners in learning Japanese, including the complexity of the writing system and grammar, this research employs a qualitative approach with an action study design. The methods applied include direct observation, semi-structured interviews with learners and educators, and analysis of documentation related to learning activities. The results of the research indicate that the use of song media can not only create a fun and interactive learning atmosphere but also strengthen students' retention of understanding. Students reported an increase in motivation and confidence in speaking Japanese after participating in song-based learning. Observational data showed an increase in student participation, with many students actively involved in singing activities, which helped them to more easily remember understanding and sentence structures. The conclusion of this study emphasizes that the integration of song media in Japanese language learning significantly enhances the retention of integrity, pronunciation accuracy, and student engagement. Song media has been proven effective in supporting cognitive aspects, such as mastery of mathematics, as well as affective factors, such as motivation and self-confidence of learners. Therefore, it is recommended that educators choose songs that are appropriate for the students' level of understanding and combine them with other activities, such as lyric discussions and vocabulary exercises, to optimize the learning process.
