Abstract

This study explores the language barriers faced by Indonesian low-skilled workers under the Technical Intern Training Program (TITP) in Japan. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with four informants, each representing one of the following sectors: caregiving, fisheries, construction, and agriculture. The informants were selected using the snowball sampling technique. The findings reveal a linguistic mismatch between Japanese language training at LPKs (Job Training Institutions) in Indonesia and Accepting Organisations (AO) in Japan with the actual communication demands encountered in the workplace. While the training programs focus on grammar and standardized Japanese, they lack adequate preparation for the real-world, context-dependent communication skills needed in the workplace. Barriers such as limited understanding of technical terms and local dialects hinder effective adaptation. This study underscores the need for workplace-oriented, practical language training to enhance communication, productivity, and social integration of Indonesian TITP workers in Japan.

Abstract

Japanese cuisine has emerged as one of the most rapidly growing food trends in Indonesia over the past decade. This article explores the phenomenon of Japanese cuisine in Indonesia, focusing on trends, cultural influences, and local adaptations. Through a comprehensive analysis of literature and previous research, this study identifies gaps in existing research and offers novel insights into how Japanese cuisine has been adapted to fit the local context. The methodology employed includes qualitative analysis of data gathered from various sources, including academic articles, related books and research reports. The results of this study indicate that Japanese cuisine is not only embraced but also uniquely adapted by Indonesian society. It reflects a complex interplay between global culinary trends and local cultural identities. Thus, it can be concluded that the acceptance and adaptation of Japanese cuisine by Indonesian society reflect a dynamic process of acculturation, in which global culinary elements are reinterpreted to align with local tastes and cultural values. This highlights that cuisine is not merely a means of consumption, but also a medium of cultural interaction that expresses the identity and creativity of local communities in responding to global influences.

Abstract

This study compares the semantic similarities and differences between the Japanese adjective usui and the Indonesian adjective tipis. Using a qualitative method based on Koyanagi’s linguistic phenomena, data were collected from a Japanese language corpus such as nlb.ninjal.ac.jp from 1985 to 2005 and news articles in both Japanese and Indonesian (asahi.com, nhk.co.jp, jawapos.com, cnbcindonesia.com, antaranews.com and tribunnews.com from 2015 to 2024). The findings reveal seven shared meanings: (1) a short distance between two surfaces, (2) thin layers, (3) low gas density, (4) sparse hair or fur, (5) minimal impact or benefit, (6) subtle emotional expression, and (7) weak belief or confidence. Differences in semantic scope were also identified. Usui includes additional meanings such as (1) pale in color, (2) diluted, and (3) bland in taste or senses that not present in tipis. Conversely, tipis also conveys the meaning of (1) being easily irritated, which is not found in usui. Additionally, the study identifies instances of icchi, ketsujou, and shinki. These findings offer valuable insights that may benefit beginner to semi-advanced Japanese language learners and Japanese language teaching, particularly in the field of language education and semantic understanding.

Abstract

This study investigates the types and functions of ontological metaphors in Genbaku Shishū by Tōge Sankichi, focusing on how they represent the physical and psychological impact of the Hiroshima atomic bombing. Using a qualitative method with a stylistic approach and content analysis, the study is grounded in Lakoff and Johnson’s conceptual metaphor theory. Ontological metaphors found in the poems were categorized into five types: thought, event, emotion, inanimate object, and body part. A total of 192 lines containing ontological metaphors were identified. Body part metaphors are the most dominant (107 lines), followed by inanimate objects (60), emotions (13), events (8), and thoughts (4). These metaphors express abstract experiences—pain, trauma, and memory—as concrete entities, enhancing emotional depth and imagery. The study concludes that ontological metaphors strengthen the poetic expression of historical trauma and deepen readers’ engagement with the victims’ lived experiences.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the individuation process of the main character in the anime Charlotte, Otosaka Yuu, using Carl Gustav Jung’s analytical psychology theory, specifically focusing on the integration of the four main archetypes: persona, shadow, anima, and self. Using a descriptive qualitative method, data were collected through careful observation of the anime, including transcripts of dialogue and relevant screenshots. The analysis reveals that Yuu experiences a complete process of individuation. Yuu gradually discards his persona and begins to live more authentically. Yuu’s shadow is acknowledged and accepted without being allowed to dominate his behavior. Yuu’s anima develops through his emotional connection with Nao, which helps him access his empathy and vulnerability. Ultimately, Yuu reaches the self, a state of psychological wholeness, marked by his willingness to sacrifice himself for others based on inner conviction rather than external validation. This transformation demonstrates that Yuu achieves an integrated and mature personality through his internal journey and interpersonal relationships. This analysis demonstrates how anime can depict complex psychological growth, offering valuable insights into character development and the symbolic representation of the human psyche in popular media. The study contributes to anime studies and highlights the applicability of Jungian theory to modern visual storytelling.

Abstract

The Japanese government actively promotes art and culture through the Japan Foundation to attract the attention of the Indonesian people, thereby fostering emotional closeness and strengthening the relationship between the two countries. As a result, Indonesians will come to like Japanese products and consume Japanese products made in Indonesia as well as those imported from Japan. This will also encourage Indonesian tourists to visit Japan and Indonesian youth to study or work in Japan. This study aims to identify the objectives and benefits of the Sakura Matsuri held in Cikarang and why it was held in that city. This study uses theories of cultural sociology, communication sociology, migration, and soft power. This study uses qualitative methods through internet searches, literature data, and interviews with the committee and visitors. The Sakura Matsuri event held in Cikarang District, Bekasi Regency, West Java Province, is one way Indonesia and Japan are fostering economic cooperation through cultural diplomacy. This event will attract young Indonesians who are new to Japanese culture. Young people who are already familiar with Japan but have not had the opportunity to visit can obtain information at several booths about how to travel to Japan or live in Japan to study or work.

Abstract

The research is about the neurotic personality of the main character Ryuhei Sasaki in the film script "Tokyo Sonata" by director Kiyoshi Kurosawa. The research used qualitative descriptive research approach. The purpose of the study is to describe Ryuhei Sasaki's character using Karen Horney's psychoanalysis theory. Research data are scenes and dialogues related to research issues. The results of the analysis show that Ryuhei Sasaki's neurotic personality includes; power personality, social recognition or prestige personality, admiring personal personality, perfection and disbelief personality.

Abstract

This study examines four kanji characters containing the bushu oni (鬼) that do not lexically mean "demon," yet carry connotative meanings associated with demonic traits. The research aims to reveal these connotations through semantic and semiotic approaches within the context of Japanese culture. A descriptive qualitative method was employed, based on literature review. The structural analysis of the kanji was conducted using the Rikusho theory to determine character formation types, while Roland Barthes’ semiotic theory was applied to interpret the cultural symbolism embedded in each character. The results indicate that the four analyzed kanji Tamashii, Minikui, Sakigake, Mi (魂, 醜, 魁, and 魅) share associative meanings with the traits of oni in Japanese mythology such as supernatural power, seductiveness, or grotesque appearance despite lacking direct lexical links to “demon.” These findings demonstrate that the bushu oni radical can represent complex cultural values, not always negative, depending on the context. This study contributes to kanji semantics by uncovering the connotative meanings of the bushu 鬼 within Japanese cultural frameworks.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the moral development of the main character Jin Sakai in the video game Ghost of Tsushima using Lawrence Kohlberg's moral development theory. Ghost of Tsushima is an action-adventure game by Sucker Punch Productions released in 2020. The main data of this study is the narrative of the Ghost of Tsushima game, including the storyline, dialogue, and moral choices of the main character. A qualitative approach and descriptive method were used to explore the narrative, dialogue, and moral choices made by the characters in the game. Data were collected through observations of relevant cutscenes and gameplay, then analyzed using Kohlberg's six stages of moral development. The results showed that Jin Sakai underwent a complex moral transformation, starting from the preconventional phase of the legal and obedience orientation stage, the instrumental-relativist orientation stage, then entering the conventional phase of the interpersonal agreement orientation stage, the law and order orientation stage, until reaching the postconventional phase of the social contract orientation stage, and the universal ethical principles stage. This change is reflected through the inner conflict between maintaining the honor of the samurai and saving the people from the Mongol invasion in new ways that Jin Sakai created himself. These findings show that interactive media such as video games not only offer entertainment, but are also able to represent deep and relevant moral dynamics in the context of learning ethics and reflecting on human values in the digital era.

Abstract

This study explores the educational potential of Japanese manga by analyzing how academic and ethical content is embedded within three selected titles: Cells at Work!, Showa: A History of Japan, and Death Note. Using a qualitative content analysis approach, the research examines how these works convey knowledge across the domains of science, history, and ethics through narrative and visual storytelling. Findings reveal that manga can promote scientific literacy, foster historical empathy, and stimulate moral reasoning by integrating cognitive and affective learning in accessible formats. The study highlights manga’s interdisciplinary relevance and its capacity to function as a pedagogical tool in both formal and informal educational settings. These results underscore manga’s role not only as a form of entertainment but as a culturally responsive medium for critical and character education. Implications for educators, researchers, and curriculum designers are discussed, with recommendations for further exploration of manga’s integration into diverse learning environments
