Abstract

The integral function of reading in fostering scientific literacy is crucial for enhancing pupils' reading proficiency. The utilization of English comics as an instructional medium is anticipated to have a beneficial impact on pupils due to its inherent ability to evoke feelings of happiness among readers. The objective of this study is to enhance the reading comprehension abilities of students in class XI PL SMKN 4 Medan by utilizing English comics as a medium. The present study constitutes a classroom action research that adheres to the research processes outlined in the John Elliot model. These procedures encompass preparation, action, observation, reflection, and evaluation activities. The findings indicated that the mean score for students' reading comprehension fell within the medium range, with a pre-lesson average of 62.70 (57.70%) when utilizing English comic media. Following the acquisition of reading skills and comprehension through the utilization of English entertaining media during the initial phase, there was a noticeable enhancement in the mean reading comprehension proficiency of students, reaching 70 (69.23%). However, it is important to note that this achievement still falls within the moderate range. During the second cycle, there was an observed improvement in students' reading comprehension ability, as evidenced by an increase in the average value and a percentage of 81.54 (88.46%) falling inside the very high group.

Abstract

Translation is the operation of replacing text in one language with text in another language. This research aims to find out the motivation of students in using English, especially in translating English. The method used is a qualitative method by interviewing students, some were interviewed in person and some online. The goal to be achieved is to find out the motivation of students when they want to translate a few or maybe many words or sentences, which are given several questions such as how often they use English on social media, then whether there is an effect for themselves, and in what form they use it, whether it is in the form of captions, or comments and others. This qualitative research was conducted on students majoring in English with a total of 12 pupils. However, the researcher chose 7 participants due to the same statements they had. The results showed that various kinds of answers were obtained from students where the main factors of student motivation in learning translation were for aesthetics and intellectual impression, English language improvement, and audience appropriateness. Although there are various incentives to learn and use English, consistent use of the language linguistically provides social and personal benefits to its users. The use of English also demonstrates the user's ability to adapt to communication contexts and listening and communicative situations, especially for students who have a connection to the English language. Learning how to understand and use English on social media is one of the few methods that can be used to help learners learn the language.

Abstract

Mastering the structural aspects of language is a crucial component of academic writing. However, students often make intentional or unintentional errors during the writing process due to a limited understanding of grammatical principles and conventions. Careful revision and editing are vital to minimizing these errors, but technological tools such as Grammarly have become popular aids for students in checking sentence structure and grammar. This study investigates students' perceptions of Grammarly, focusing on its perceived advantages and disadvantages as a grammar-checking tool. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through a questionnaire distributed to 25 students. The findings reveal that while Grammarly offers notable benefits, such as ease of use and immediate feedback, 89.5% of students identified limitations that reduce its effectiveness. Specifically, 50.8% of respondents highlighted disadvantages, whereas 45.5% acknowledged advantages. Additionally, 42.9% of students expressed mixed sentiments regarding Grammarly's overall utility. These findings provide insights into the nuanced role of Grammarly in supporting students' academic writing and highlight areas for improvement in its application.

Abstract

The core elements of a language are its vocabulary. Early childhood development is a critical time in a person's life that holds great significance for their future. There are problems that young learners face in learning language such as hard to get focused, easy to feel bored, struggle to remember or recall vocabulary items, and still need a stimulus to boost their motivation in the learning process. Learning vocabulary through songs and video making are one of the ways to solve those problems. This current study aims to examine if the songs help young learners in retaining English vocabulary and whether a video making is effective in engaging them in learning vocabulary. This current study used a content analysis design and the samples were 5 students who are 3-7 years old and enrolled English class at RainbowKids BPI.  The results showed that songs help early childhood students to retain their English vocabulary. They had memorized all vocabulary on the songs taught to them. They were also able to use pronouns, auxiliary, verb, adjective, and even adverb of degree correctly. Making video is also effective in engaging young learners to improve their English vocabulary and speaking skills.

Abstract

This study examines the reading comprehension levels of students at Nurul Falah Senior High School Pekanbaru, focusing on three distinct categories: literal, inferential, and critical comprehension. A quantitative descriptive approach was employed, utilizing a reading comprehension test as the primary instrument. The population included 110 students, with a simple random sampling method selecting 20% for the study. The analysis revealed that the average literal comprehension score was 87.27, categorized as very good, indicating strong performance at this level. For inferential comprehension, the average score was 79.54, classified as good, demonstrating the students' ability to infer information effectively. However, the critical comprehension score averaged 53.75, falling into the less proficient category, highlighting a need for improvement in higher-order thinking skills. The findings underscore the necessity for targeted interventions to enhance critical reading abilities while sustaining strengths in literal and inferential comprehension. This research contributes to the broader discourse on literacy education, offering practical insights for educators and policymakers aiming to develop comprehensive reading skills in high school students.
