<![CDATA[One of the subjects that learn about language that can help human in using it is pragmatics. Pragmatics is the study of contextual meaning. Therefore, there must be a relationship between language and the context. The most obvious way to reflect the relationship between language and context is through deixis. Deixis is derived from the Greek word means pointing. There is no a language event without deixis or without any deictic expressions. A language event without such terms could not serve the communicative needs of its users anything like as well as a real human language. In this mini research, I chose to analyze an Indonesian novel entitled “Laskar Pelangi” (The Rainbow Troops) written by Andrea Hirata which had been translated in English by Angie Kilbane because in a novel there must be a context that surrounds the language. Moreover, in the context and the language there must be deixis between them to make the novel cohesive, coherent and acceptable for the reader. Therefore, a novel is a good material to be analyzed in finding the deixis. Based on some elaborations above, I can conclude that the use of deixis in The Rainbow Troops novel written by Andrea Hirata in 2009 need to be analyzed in the term of what types of deixis used in the novel and what the dominant type of deixes used in the novel. <![CDATA[AbstractLanguage, both spoken and written, is an evidence of human civilization as it tells the culture of its users. A language extincts when its speakers were also gone without passing it into their future users. Or else, their descendants shift their language to another so that the previous one is no longer used. The extinction of many indigenous languages in Indonesia shows that their users choose to use another languages that give them more benefit than those indigenous languages. For example, instead of using indigenous languages as their mother tounge, Javanese people choose Indonesian (the official language) or even English (the international language) as their first language. Language maintenance is then needed to do to preserve the languages and the culture embedded in its use. One of the ways to do it is by using it through mass media since they have strong influence toward people. This research describes indigenous language maintenance through printed mass media, particularly through comic strip on newspaper, tabloid and magazine. Comic strip is one of the sections in printed media, usually newspaper, using spoken language written on its panel that sometimes using part of indigenous language in the conversation of its characters. The writer shows how and comic strips at printed mass media indirectly preserve spoken Javanese.]]>

<![CDATA[This paper discusses the concepts of culture, ethnocentrism, and bias incidents targeting minority groups, in this case Muslims, in the US. The discussion about the concepts of culture is needed to give a comprehensive understanding of culture and other related topics. It helps to understand the basis of ethnocentrism. Further, it elaborates on both the concept of ethnocentrism and bias incidents that occur in America to find whether there is a common thread between the understanding and the phenomena or not. The study found that ethnocentrism could be the cause of bias incidents targeting minority groups in America. The data is obtained by using the library research method. <![CDATA[This paper is principally aimed at analyzing the theme of Richard Russo’s Empire Falls in its relation with the socio-economic context of its publication in 2001, namely the economic recession that characterizes the earliest decade of the 21st century. The analysis will be based on historical approach’s assumption of the correlation between literary works and social context in which they are produced. Intrinsically, the novel is dissected into two levels. They are surface level (form) and deeper level (content). The results of the analysis are in the form of philosophical speculations of the novel, which are believed to follow the mood of the early 21st century, including 1) disillusionment to social mobility, 2) incredulity to human agency, and 3) romantic tendencies. This novel’s reaction to the decline of capitalism in the early 21st century seems to be similar to early romantic reaction to the rise of capitalism by returning to nature and resorting to external forces whether divine entity or otherwise.Keywords: 21st century novel; American economic recession; romanticism.]]>

<![CDATA[Bikers are often considered as brutal, unlawful and unoccupied group of people disrupting the order of society. In some cases, they belong to certain gangs committing serious crime. Yet, there are also bikers riding their motorcycles in order to experience ultimate freedom; the freedom of chasing the wind and living outdoor close to nature. The idea of American Dream puts a solid basis on the two phenomena previously mentioned. The short article reveals the stereotype of American bikers by analyzing the lyrics of Ride the Wind and Ride to live, Live to Ride. The argumentative analysis is developed and elaborated through several elements of the lyrics, sociological point of view and historical perspectives. <![CDATA[Abstract This article deals with human existence as individual creature in the world based on Robert Frost’s poem ”Stopping By Woods on A Snowy Evening” and ”The Road Not Taken”. In doing research, the writer used method of collecting and analyzing data. Observation through document study was used to collect data. While descriptive qualitative method was used to analayze the data. The result shows that both pooems, through poetic device and figurative language used, tell the readers about the responsibilities of human life to do before he os she dies. These may be reponsibilities of any duties and choices in human life. Through the first poem, Robert Frost reminds human being for having forgotten his or her duties in life. Then through the second poem, the poet emphasizes the importaance of making choices and its consequences of the choices. Key words: human existence, creature, life, choice, duty]]>

<![CDATA[A linguistic analysis of literature has caused debates among linguists and between linguists and literary critics. The debate among linguists occurs because they have different opinions regarding the nature of literary language, while the debate between linguists and literary scholars arises as literary scholars question the authority of linguistics to study literary writings. Therefore, in this paper I argue that the language of literature is similar to that of non-literary texts, and I also believe that because the centrality of language in literary writings, linguistics, as the study of language, has the authority to study literature. One linguistic approach to literature is stylistics, which studies the forms, functions, and meanings of literary language in a detailed and systematic way. <![CDATA[Vocabularies are important parts of all languages across the globe. When vocabularies develop through human communication, the language is considered as a living language instead of a dead language. English is a living language that undergoes some developments both in grammar and vocabularies. Those developments include pronunciation, spelling, and meaning that occur in every period, that is to say, Old English, Middle English, and Modern English. In addition, English has cosmopolitan and resourcefulness characteristics. English is a cosmopolitan language since it borrows and adopts some vocabularies from other languages and resourcefulness means that English undergoes some affixation through derivation and inflection. <![CDATA[This essay deals with features of stylistic communication deciphered from Goo Goo Dolls’ Iris. The features are patterned in the text and discourse of the song lyric. The features are patterned as sound devices, process participants and vocabulary communicated within the song lyric. The analysis caters for relationship between grammaticalness and interpretability of the lyric. The analysis is framed within nature of literary communication in stylistics. The pattern creates communication act which is self-contained, independent of social context and expressive of reality.]]>
