Abstract

This study aims to find out the students’ and teachers’ perceptions on implementing the computer-based test as the final assessment in SMA Negeri 1 Soe. This study used a qualitative descriptive design. The instruments used were questionnaires and interviews. The data of this study was collected through spreading questionnaires and interviews. The data of this study were analyzed by using SPSS. The result of the study showed that students perceive there were some benefits of CBT implementation, such as; getting new experiences, training them to operate computers well and work harder, showing their grades directly, and teaching them to be honest. While the teachers perceive that it gave them a new challenge as the demand to be innovative to face the development of science and technology in this digital era, it was an effective way to measure the students’ learning achievement. It was a good way to promote the school level and accreditation, as an effort to improve the quality of teaching and learning, saving money because they did not need to spend it for buying papers, pens. But students and teachers also stated some weaknesses of CBT implementation such as; server error, electricity problems, time (session) delay, and computer errors.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of Question-Answer Relationship and Anticipation-Reaction Guide strategies for enhancing students’ reading comprehension to students with high and low critical thinking. This study is quantitative research by using experimental factorial design 2x2. The participants of this study were 26 students of XI-IPS1 as the first experimental group and 25 students of XI-IPS 2 as the second experimental group at the Islamic Private Senior High School Sultan Agung 3 Semarang. The findings of this study show that (1) Question-Answer Relationship strategy has better effect for students with high and low critical thinking (2) Question-Answer Relationship and Anticipation-Reaction Guide strategies are equal treated to students with high critical thinking (3) Question-Answer Relationship strategy has better effect to students with low critical thinking (4) the students with high and low critical thinking improve equally treated by Question-Answer Relationship strategy (5) the students with high critical thinking improve better treated by Anticipation-Reaction Guide strategy (6) there is an interaction among teaching strategies, reading comprehension, and their critical thinking. To sum up, there is an interaction among teaching strategies, reading comprehension, and students’ critical thinking in teaching reading hortatory exposition texts to students with high and low critical thinking. Abstract

This study investigated the effectiveness of British Council Podcast Apps to improve students’ listening comprehension of students in senior high school. For that purpose, this study carried out a quasi-experimental research design by applying pre-test and post-test. There were two classes consisting 72 students (36 students are in control group; 36 students in experimental) of senior high school. This study took place in SMA Negeri 9 Semarang, Indonesia. In collecting the data, an adopted listening comprehension test was used in pre-test and post-test. SPSS 23 was then used to analyze the mean, standard deviation and t-test calculation. The result showed that British Council Podcast Apps is effective to improve the students’ listening comprehension. This study implies that utilizing technology in listening class is important to support the students achieve the maximum goal of learning as well as the improvement of their listening comprehension.

Abstract

Grammar is a problematic issue regarding English comprehension for the students, both spoken and written. Several studies showed that English- subtitled movies are effective to develop students' skills in English. Thus, students' behavior in watching English-subtitled movies can be interlinked with their understanding of spoken Grammar. This study aims to find students' perception of using English subtitled movies toward students' Spoken Grammar Understanding. Ten participants who enrolled in spoken grammar course participated in this study. An online closed-ended questionnaire is employed to determine students' perception of using English subtitled movies to their Spoken Grammar Understanding. An online semi-structured interview was then used to clarify and elaborate the students’ view on using English subtitled movies to their Spoken Grammar Understanding further. From the result, the subtitled movies are perceived to impact the students’ spoken grammar understanding significantly. This study implies the use of subtitled movies in English teaching and learning grammar.

Abstract

This study focuses on the advantages and disadvantages of learning report text using YouTube video in Covid-19 Pandemic. The purpose of this study was to find out the advantages and disadvantages of online learning using YouTube video media during the covid-19 pandemic through student opinions about learning taking place. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method, in which this study describes students' opinions through questionnaires and interviews that have been conducted by researchers. The participants of this study were 56 students who took part in the interview and 14 students who took part in the interview, all participants were taken from the twelfth class of hotel accommodation at SMK N 4 Yogyakarta. The results of this study indicate that in learning report text using YouTube media has advantages and disadvantages. The students give a positive response to the number of benefits that can be obtained during the learning process, even though the losses that can be obtained are also quite a lot.

Abstract

Technology use in teaching and learning process had become very popular especially in the 21st century. Padlet is one of online platforms which have simple design and well-integrated features to support learning process. The implementation of Padlet turns the learning process becomes students-centered. This study discusses the use of Padlet in improving students’ writing skills. It mainly describes how the Padlet affect students’ interest in the learning process especially writing. This study is a qualitative research which using questionnaires to gather the data. The questionnaires given to students are divided into two types, namely yes-no question and yes-no question with reason. Students were given six questions related to their experience in using Padlet. Based on the results, most of students agree that the implementation of Padlet in writing class can improve their interest and writing skills. Students give positive responds towards the use of Padlet because of the great features provided in Padlet and immediate feedback they get from teacher and peers.

Abstract

Literature is one of the tools used by humans to depict social phenomenon. Since centuries ago, there are a lot of literary works have brought up suicide into the topics. Today, this topic is still becoming a thing in popular novels. One of the most popular is Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher. Data are collected by using the novel. Data were analyzed by detailing intrinsic elements, motives for teen suicide, and the theoretical implications for English Language Teaching. The findings of this research explained some interesting things about this novel. First, it is about how Jay Asher presents each element in this novel not only visually, but also how the elements are perceived by the characters. Jay uniquely presents two narrations from Hannah & Clay back and forth throughout the novel, which makes this novel very interesting. Second, there are 7 from 10 items on IMSA found in Hannah's statements that scientifically support her actions to end her life. Third, this novel could be used as a tool for teachers to teach about empathy, mental health, and suicide prevention in High Schools.
