Abstract

This study offers an epistemological appraisal of Koroang Mala’bi’ (revised 2019) by examining three pillars: (1) its reference sources, (2) the translation techniques employed, and (3) the accuracy of the final text. The research is library-based; primary data consist of the revised juz 30 and a focused interview with the translator, Muh. Idham Khalid Bodi, while secondary data are drawn from classical and modern tafsir works, Mandar dictionaries, and previous studies. Findings show that the revision still relies chiefly on Tafsīr Jalālayn, Tafsir al-Azhar, and the 2002 Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA) translation, supplemented by 930 footnotes extracted from the MoRA 2019 edition. Idham adopts a predominantly ḥarfiyyah (word-for-word) approach, shifting to a tafsīriyyah (interpretive) mode only when literal rendering becomes opaque in Mandar. In terms of accuracy, most verses are precise, yet several key terms—such as ḥisāb and qalam—are rendered inconsistently. Overall readability is satisfactory, although a few verses require re-reading due to overlapping synonyms or typographical errors. Linguistic naturalness is generally high, aided by culturally embedded terms like Puang Allah Taala and allo kiama’, but several untranslated borrowings remain unfamiliar to lay readers. The study recommends compiling a standardized glossary, conducting systematic proofreading, and adding brief glosses to enhance the intelligibility of regional-language Qur’ān translations.

Abstract

This study re-examines Ahmad Hassan’s Tafsir al-Furqan in order to address the recurrent accusations of intolerance leveled against its author. Employing a qualitative design and content-analysis techniques, all verses concerning Muslim–non-Muslim relations in the 1988 edition are isolated as units of analysis and coded according to thematic categories (freedom of belief, autonomy of worship, dialogical ethics) and linguistic features (negation patterns, parenthetical insertions, lexical restrictions). The findings reveal a close dialectic between Hassan’s puritan ideology and his adherence to Qurʾānic linguistic discipline. The three pillars of tolerance—freedom of worship, prohibition of coercing faith, and prohibition of insulting other religious symbols—emerge as direct implications of the Qurʾānic wording, whereas the terms kufr and ṭāghūt are deliberately narrowed to underscore the superiority of Islamic law. Through this model of “conditional tolerance,” Hassan affirms the existential rights of non-Muslims without relativizing Islam’s truth claims. The study thus revises the prevailing “anti-plural puritan” stereotype in the literature and offers a new analytical framework for Indonesian tafsir studies that integrates ideology, language, and social context.

Abstract

This study addresses a gap concerning the semantics of istiwā’ in Afifuddin Dimyathi’s Tafsir Hidayat al-Qur’ān. Using qualitative, text-based content analysis, it examines the QS Yūnus 10:3 entry in dialogue with QS al-Shūrā 42:11 to show how istiwā’ is framed within iṡbāt, thereby preserving communicability while avoiding takyīf, tasybīh, and ta‘ṭīl. Primary data come from the latest available edition of the tafsīr; secondary materials include classical and modern commentaries and studies on mutasyābihāt. The findings indicate genealogical resonance with Ibn Kathīr’s method of accepting the wording as transmitted and sustained reliance on a Qurʾan-by-Qurʾan framework, supported by sound ḥadīṡ, early reports, linguistic principles, and calibrated ijtihad. The study contributes by clarifying the place of istiwā’ within a local bi al-ma’ṡūr tradition and by proposing pedagogical criteria that prioritize the scriptural text, elucidate it through muḥkam verses, and delegate the “how” in order to safeguard tanzīh.

Abstract

This study aims to critically examine how Orientalist discourse is integrated into the formal curriculum of pesantren-based Islamic higher education institutions in Indonesia, with a specific focus on ISQI Sunan Pandanaran Yogyakarta. The main argument of this research is that Islamic universities—even those rooted in pesantren tradition—are capable of facilitating a productive encounter between faith and critical rationality within the academic sphere. Using a qualitative approach and data collection techniques such as classroom observation and interviews with the head of the Qur’anic Studies program and 54 ISQI students, the study finds that Orientalist materials actually encourage a recontextualization of Qur’anic studies that balances faith with critical reasoning. Student reception indicates growth in reflective, argumentative skills and openness to interdisciplinary approaches. The findings suggest that pesantren have significant potential to become spaces for global epistemic dialogue when supported by inclusive and reflective pedagogical structures. The study recommends further exploration of cross-discursive curricular dynamics in contemporary Islamic education.

Abstract

This study examines the Tafsir of Oemar Bakry which appears textualist and intolerant of diversity. Bakry's Tafsir, which is part of the dynamics of Qur'an Tafsir in the archipelago, is paradoxical to the identity of the archipelago, which is known as a multicultural and plural country. Based on this tendency, through a hermeneutical approach, the researcher tries to find the form of Bakry's tafsir that has a puritanical tendency, explore the factors behind Bakry's ideological reasoning, and place the relevance of his interpretation with the current reality. To obtain these results, this research uses qualitative research with primary sources from Oemar Bakry's Tafsir Rahmat, especially his tafsir of the themes of wasīlah, syafā'at, and grave pilgrimage. While secondary sources are found through a search for other literature that supports the research. Based on this research method, this study concludes that Oemar Bakry's puritanical tendency is consistently centered on the theme of wasīlah, syafā'at and grave pilgrimage. While the tendency of ideologization in Tafsir Rahmat is suspected to be influenced by several factors, including Bakry's pre-understanding of the ideology of the reformers, pre-understanding of the concepts of syafā'at, kafir, shirk and the use of a textualist approach in interpreting the Qur'an. Meanwhile, the relevance of Bakry's tafsir to the current reality shows that Bakry's tafsir is intolerant of religious diversity in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study examines Qur’anic interpretation practices on the Instagram account @akal.indo from the perspective of philosophical hermeneutics. Moving beyond the view of social media tafsir as mere religious popularization, this research conceptualizes digital meaning production as an operational hermeneutical practice. Using qualitative content analysis of publicly accessible posts, the study identifies a three-stage interpretive process: discussion, reflection, and contextualization. Interpretation begins with framing contemporary problems—such as mental health, family relationships, and financial ethics—as the initial horizon of understanding. This is followed by reflective translation of Qur’anic values into the language of modern psychology and management, and culminates in contextualization, where these values are operationalized into practical principles for urban life. From a Gadamerian perspective, this dynamic represents a fusion of horizons between classical exegetical tradition and the lived experiences of digital audiences. The study concludes that digital Qur’anic interpretation on social media constitutes a problem-oriented hermeneutical model that reconstructs normative Qur’anic values adaptively within a digital communicative ecosystem.

Abstract

This article examines the construction of repentance in Syu’bah Asa’s socio-political Qur’anic interpretation, focusing on his discussion of repentance in Dalam Cahaya Al-Qur’an: Tafsir Ayat-Ayat Sosial Politik. The study departs from the observation that repentance is often framed as a private spiritual experience, whereas Syu’bah Asa articulates it as a public ethic that binds both political leaders and citizens. Employing a qualitative library-based approach, the paper conducts an interpretive reading of the text by identifying key themes and tracing argumentative patterns. The findings indicate that Syu’bah Asa defines repentance through socially verifiable actions, particularly the restoration of public rights, accountability for unjust gains, and a concrete commitment to rectify abusive practices and public policies. He develops the notion of structural repentance, namely a form of repentance directed at systemic wrongdoing such as corruption, the suppression of civil liberties, and the abuse of power, thereby rejecting purely symbolic religiosity or verbal remorse as sufficient. These results position Syu’bah Asa’s tafsir as a transformational mode of interpretation that links Qur’anic spirituality to public accountability and socio-political reform.
