Abstract

This article explores the phenomenon of mythologizing Qur'anic memes on social media platforms, employing Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis as a theoretical framework. The focus of this study is the examination of the Qur'anic meme pertaining to the theme of women's deceit. The extent to which the interpretation of the Qur'an depicted in the meme gives rise to myths that obfuscate its original meaning will be examined. This study has a specific objective of addressing three inquiries: firstly, the manner in which verses are interpreted within the context of the meme depicting women's deceit; secondly, the myths encompassed within the meme illustrating women's deceit; and thirdly, the implications that arise from the mythologization of memes in relation to the interpretation of the Qur'an. To address these three concerns, this study employs a descriptive-analytical approach utilising Roland Barthes' semiotic framework. Consequently, the meme illustrates a myth that arises from the amalgamation of the interpretations of Al-Nisā'[4]: 76 and Yūsuf [12]: 28, suggesting that the allure of women holds greater sway than the allure of Satan. The perpetuation of the myth engenders a sense of cynicism towards women, thereby reinforcing the prevalence of misogynistic interpretations.

Abstract

One of the crucial factors to take into account when examining the variety of Qur'anic interpretations is networks of scholarly transmission. In the realm of Indonesian exegesis, the prevalent network originates from Egypt, evident in the significant impact of al-Manār and its subsequent works on the creation of tafsir and Qur'ānic translations in Indonesia. Prior to Egypt's emergence as a popular choice for Indonesian Islamic education, the primary destination was Hijāz. Concerning tafsir, how does this Hijāz route work? This paper explores the interpretation of the Indonesian-Hijaz axis by analysing one of the tafsir works produced by interpreters of the Indonesian-Hijaz route, namely al-Ibrīz li Ma'rifati Tafsīr al-Qur'ān al-'Azīz by Bisri Mustofa. The inquiry at hand pertains to the intellectual network that influences Bisri Mustofa's tafsir work and the manner in which the Indonesian-Hijaz line of interpretation is manifested in al-Ibrīz. This article employs a historiographical approach, utilising a descriptive analytical method. The study concludes that Muhammad ʿAlawī al-Malikī's al-Qawā'id al-Asāsiyyah fi ʿUlum al-Qur'ān is a significant work in the field of ʿulum al-Qur'ān scholarship within the Indonesian-Hijaz axis, and al-Ibrīz is aligned with this book. Likewise, al-Ibrīz exhibits a closer affinity with the works of al-Bayḍāwī, Jalāl al-Dīn Al-Suyūṭī, and ʿAbd al-Raʾuf al-Sinkilī, who had already gained significant readership in Indonesia prior to the impact of al-Manār. This article demonstrates that the various channels through which scholars transmit their interpretations have an impact on the content of their tafsir.

Abstract

This study investigates the presence of the Qur'an within the agricultural community of Madura. The study of the living Quran encompasses the reception of the Qur'an in the practical context of farming in Madura. This research examines the way in which the Qur'an is experienced and practiced within a specific community, focusing on its performative nature and positioning it under the frame of discursive tradition. The research aims to address two main questions: firstly, what are the many modes of Qur'an performance among the agricultural community in Madura; and secondly, how does the discursive tradition around these performances manifest itself. This study is grounded in a field investigation that gathers data through interviews, observations, and supplementary literature reviews. This article contends that the Qur'an serves as both a prayer and an integral part of the daily life of the farming community in Madura, from the pre-farming stage to harvesting. Additionally, it highlights the pivotal role of the kiai in transmitting Islamic teachings, resulting in the development of traditions that are prevalent among the Madurese community.

Abstract

The verses found in the Qur'an are not detached from their historical context, known as asbāb al-nuzūl, playing an essential role in the practice of interpreting the Qur'an. Known as a medieval commentator and the author of the book entitled Asbāb al-Nuzūl al-Qur’ān, al-Wāḥidī emerged as one of the critical scholars in examining and citing from the reasons for revelation of verses. This article attempts to elucidate the consistency of Al-Wāḥidī in the process of interpreting the Qur'an by focusing on one of his exegesis works, Al-Wasīṭ Fī Tafsīr Al-Qur’ān Al-Majīd. By employing the main principle of asbāb al-nuzūl as a tool for interpretation and historical tracing of the descent of Qur'anic verses, the author finds that in terms of the concept of asbāb al-nuzūl formulated by al-Wāḥidī, there is not much deviation from the main principle of asbāb al-nuzūl. However, regarding the use of asbāb al-nuzūl as an element in interpretation, al-Wāḥidī tends to be inconsistent in interpretations based on Asbāb al-Nuzūl al-Qur’an in his exegesis book, Al-Wasīṭ Fī Tafsīr Al-Qur’ān Al-Majīd.

Abstract

This article examines the practice of reciting surah al-Insyirah and surah al-Ikhlas of the congregation of the Miftahul Huda Mosque Domerto Munjungan Trenggalek, East Java. The focus of this article is to examine the reception of the Qur'an in the recitation of surah al-Insyirah and surah al-Ikhlas of the congregation of the Miftahul Huda Mosque Domerto Munjungan, Trenggalek, East Java. The formulation of the problem in this study is, 1) how is the ritual of reading surah al-Insyirah and surah al-Ikhlas, 2) how is the meaning of the congregation according to the sociological theory of knowledge of Karl Mannheim, 3) how is its transmission and transformation. This article is a field study using a qualitative descriptive method. The tools used for data collection are interviews with 12 people, observations carried out 4 times and a literature review. This article also uses Karl Mannheim's theory of sociology of knowledge. After the researchers conducted the research, it can be concluded that the congregation of the Miftahul Huda Mosque Domerto Munjungan Trenggalek routinely performs the practice of reciting surah al-Insyirah and surah al-Ikhlas. First, this reading is done every Monday night after the congregational Isha' prayer. Second, the meaning contained is divided into 3 meanings, the first meaning is the objective meaning where in this meaning the Miftahul Huda mosque congregation understands the practice of reading Surah al-Insyirah and Surah al-Ikhlas as routine activities carried out every Monday night. The second meaning is expressive meaning that can be seen from the congregation's response to the practice of reciting surah al-Insyirah and surah al-Ikhlas as a means of friendship between others, a form of connecting ties of brotherhood, as a means of increasing devotion to Allah, and is believed to be able to carry out all their affairs. . The last meaning is the documentary meaning which can be seen that this practice is a culture that is ingrained and cannot be released for the congregation. Third, the process of transmission and transformation can be seen from several hadiths that explain it. The transmission process of surah al-Insyirah and surah al-Ikhlas can be known through hadith narrations. In the transmission of surah al-Insyirah, the author finds the book of maraqil ubudiyah and the book of khazinat al-Asrar. While the transmission of Surah al-Ikhlas comes from the hadith of 'Aisyah ra about the habits of the Prophet Muhammad before sleeping. The transformation can be seen from the changes during the time of the Prophet Muhammad, becoming a practice that is carried out every Monday night after the Isha prayer by the congregation of the Miftahul Huda Mosque Domerto Munjungan Trenggalek.

Abstract

The utilization of natural resources for food production is vital for meeting the needs and enhancing the welfare of Indonesia. Despite Indonesia's significant agricultural potential, challenges such as land scarcity, fertilizer shortages, pest infestations, and unpredictable global climate changes have impacted the food sector, leading the country to become a rice importer since the 1997 economic crisis. This research aims to examine the interpretation of agricultural verses in the Qur'an by comparing Quraish Shihab's Tafsir Al-Mishbah and the Tafsir Ilmi developed by the Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kemenag). Employing a descriptive and comparative literature review methodology, the study utilizes primary sources including the Qur'an, Tafsir Al-Mishbah, and Tafsir Ilmi, alongside secondary sources from various scholarly works. The research addresses two primary questions: (1) What are the similarities and differences in the interpretations of agricultural verses between the two tafsir sources? (2) How do these interpretations contribute to the development of the agricultural sector? Findings indicate that both tafsir emphasize agriculture as an integral part of human life intertwined with spiritual and moral values. Tafsir Ilmi highlights scientific and ecological aspects, while Tafsir Al-Mishbah focuses on philosophical and ethical dimensions. The integration of scientific knowledge and religious values offers a comprehensive framework for sustainable agricultural practices, thereby providing significant contributions to overcoming current agricultural challenges in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study examines the concept of gratitude (syukur) in Sayyid Quṭb's (1906 CE) tafsir Fī Ẓilāl al-Qur’ān, which integrates theological and logical aspects in its interpretation. The research employs content analysis with a qualitative approach, focusing on Quṭb's interpretations of Quranic verses related to gratitude. The primary data sources are the tafsir Fī Ẓilāl al-Qur’ān and related literature discussing Quṭb’s thought. The findings reveal that Quṭb provides a comprehensive understanding of gratitude encompassing theological, cognitive, and philosophical dimensions. He emphasizes that gratitude is not merely a verbal expression or ritual worship but also involves human awareness of free choice and the logical consequences of their actions. This research fills a gap in previous studies that have often overlooked an in-depth analysis of the concept of gratitude in Quṭb’s tafsir and contributes significantly to understanding how the Quran connects theological and logical dimensions within the context of human life.

Abstract

This article discusses the differences in the scholarly approaches of three major Indonesian tafsir scholars, namely Islah Gusmian, Ervan Nurtawab, and Jajang A. Rohmana, within the scope of Indonesian exegetical scholarship. As prominent figures in the field of Indonesian Qur'anic interpretation, these three scholars possess unique characteristics that are often overlooked by the current generation. By analyzing and extracting data from their works, as well as from other exegetical scholars, the author aims to identify the major themes, methods, and arguments constructed by them. This exploration is significant in revealing the scholarly substance of each figure. The argument in this article posits that a researcher’s approach is shaped not only by diverse social and educational backgrounds but also by distinct patterns that they develop in discussing and expanding Indonesian tafsir studies. This is evident in how each scholar positions themselves and formulates their viewpoint in understanding the tafsir audience. This paper is expected to contribute to the mapping of their works for future researchers and serve as a literature review for a more in-depth study of Indonesian Qur'anic interpretation.

Abstract

This study focuses on the methodology employed by Ismail Al-Ascholiy in his interpretation of Safīnah Kalla Sayaʾlamūn fī Tafsīr Shaikhinā Maimūn. As a tafsir text that emerges from KH Maimun Zubair’s interpretive transcripts, this work offers a new nuance and appears somewhat unfamiliar within the spectrum of Indonesian tafsir. Hence, it serves as an appealing locus for research on Indonesian tafsir, given the absence of a comprehensive methodological study on this particular tafsir text. To examine the methodology of Safīnah Kalla Sayaʾlamūn fī Tafsīr Shaikhinā Maimūn, this research draws upon Islah Gusmian’s theoretical framework of tafsir book methodology and employs a qualitative approach in the form of content analysis. The findings indicate that Safīnah is presented thematically. In clarifying its verses, the tafsir tends to explain them globally using a popular writing style, which does not fulfill formal academic standards. This is because it was neither intended for academic purposes nor written under the auspices of any institutional affiliation. Judging by its method, this tafsir adopts a contextual approach by incorporating historical elements and reason, thereby producing a distinctly social nuance in its interpretation.

Abstract

In the Quran, the term infertility is expressed with the words 'āqir and 'aqīm. The word 'āqir is used to describe the condition of barrenness experienced by the wife of Prophet Zakariya. While lafadz 'aqīm is used to explain the condition of infertility experienced by the wife of Prophet Ibrahim. The scholars have different opinions in interpreting these two words. Some of them define both of them as sterility which is a special condition for women so that the woman cannot become pregnant. These arguments about infertility need to be studied in depth because they contradict one of the visions of Islam that teaches equality. It is not the text that is wrong, but human understanding of a proposition that needs to be straightened out. In studying the verses about infertility, the researcher uses the qirā`ah mubādalah approach by understanding the verses of the Qur'an through universal texts, finding the main idea or moral ideal of a verse and implementing the main idea to the verse. Implementing the main idea to a general subject without distinguishing gender and sex. The results show that 'āqir is sterility that can happen to anyone regardless of gender. The cause of 'āqir is the presence of certain factors that prevent pregnancy.  If these factors are removed, then pregnancy can occur. Whereas 'aqīm is sterility that can happen to anyone regardless of gender. Unlike 'āqir, 'aqīm is sterility that is known from the beginning, because it is created that way. Therefore, attributing 'āqir and 'aqīm only to women is a gender-biased understanding, because sterility can be caused by anyone, regardless of gender. This kind of understanding needs to be developed to produce egalitarian values in the midst of society.
