Abstract

An approach certainly does not exist in a vacuum but is inseparable from the study and construction of the thoughts of its predecessors. This is also the case with the maʿnā-cum-maghzā approach, a new method of understanding texts initiated by Sahiron Syamsuddin. This article discusses the dynamics of the maʿnā-cum-maghzā approach in the history of Indonesian scholarship. The questions to be answered in this study are how did the maʿnā-cum-maghzā approach emerge in Indonesia? What is the portrait and dynamics of the maʿnā-cum-maghzā approach in Indonesia? How do Indonesian academics respond to the presence of maʿnā-cum-maghzā? With an accentuation on the bibliographic research model, it is found that maʿnā-cum-maghzā is the result of a form of continuity and change to previous studies, especially in the works of Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd, Abdullah Saeed, and Fazlur Rahman. Methodically, maʿnā-cum-maghzā is similar to Fazlur Rahman's double movement and Abdullah Saeed's contextualization. However, after maʿnā-cum-maghzā was introduced as a method, especially from 2009 until this research was written (September 2021) there have been hundreds of Indonesian academics who are interested in studying and applying it to texts, both religious and non-religious texts. This phenomenon shows that the study of maʿnā-cum-maghzā in Indonesia is dynamic, especially in relation to its implications for the Qurʾān and hadith.

Abstract

The Qur'anic verse is indeed a text, which to understand it needs to be bridged by scholars who are qualified in the field of linguistic rules to produce an interpretation. Mufasirs and Muslims in general place interpretation as a reference for understanding the Qur'an, but for Jane Dammen McAuliffe, interpretation controls the meaning of the Qur'an. McAuliffe believes that the two cannot be equated and aligned as a way to understand the Qur'an. Thus, one cannot be generalized to represent the general view. The purpose of this article is to attempt to illustrate how McAuliffe views the relationship between the Qur'ān and tafsir as one of the Islamic thinkers. To further examine McAuliffe's thoughts, the method the author uses is library research with a content analysis approach. The results of this article are: First, McAuliffe explains that the interpretation of the Qur'an has been controlling the meaning of the Qur'an. Second, the Qur'an is morphologically unchanging, it lives semantically. Meanwhile, tafsir is considered as a particular hermeneutical configuration. From the results of this study, it can be concluded that the Qur'anic verse is indeed a text, which requires linguistic rules to understand. However, the text is also an integrated part of the context, stripping the context that should be attached to the text has the potential to cause gaps in meaning.

Abstract

The development of PAI teaching materials on Qur'anic sub-materials is related to the development of Qur'anic science and tafsir.  If the development of teaching materials for the Qur'an does not pay attention to the trend of Qur'anic studies, the understanding obtained by students is less relevant to the context of life they experience. This article will discuss three fundamental things: how is the structure of Qur'anic material in PAI subjects in schools, how is the contextuality of Qur'anic understanding presented in PAI teaching materials in schools, and how is the approach needed for the development of Qur'anic material in PAI teaching materials in schools. The research method used is library research with data collected through documentation method in the form of Islamic teaching materials for elementary, junior and senior high schools published by the Centre for Curriculum and Bookkeeping of the Ministry of National Education. The collected data were then classified, presented in the presentation of data and analysed by the method of text analysis with an explanatory analysis approach, namely describing and criticising the substance of its content according to the categories in the research problem. The results of the study show a discrepancy between the objectives of learning al-Qu'ran at the elementary, junior high and high school levels with a number of supporting things. The priority of learning to read as the purpose of learning the Qur'an at the primary level is disrupted by the purpose of learning the Qur'an at the primary level which is also aimed at understanding the content of the Qur'an by interpreting the verses of the Qur'an. While the material for understanding the content of the Qur'an at the junior and senior high school levels is still very minimal from the source of tafsir sources so that the learning material is less contextual and actual.

Abstract

Human trafficking is one of the world's problems that almost every country, including Indonesia, experiences or faces. Human trafficking is not a new issue in Indonesia, as this practise has never ceased to exist throughout the years. Humans are viewed as commodities that can be easily exploited, whereas, according to Islam, humans must be protected and granted freedom in accordance with their nature. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct a comprehensive analysis of human trafficking in the Qur'an so that it can be implemented in practise. This research asks how the ma'nā-cum-maghzā study in Q. Yūsuf [12]: 19-20 relates to human trafficking. As a result, this paper employs the analytical-critical method and Sahiron Syamsuddin's ma'nā-cum-maghzā theory as its methodology and focuses solely on Q. 12: 19-20. Human trafficking is not explicitly forbidden in the Qur'an, but it is described in the form of the story of the past. In the story of the Prophet Yūsuf (peace be upon him), he was a victim of human trafficking. This practise violates the right to liberty of every human being, so it is imperative that countries abandon it.

Abstract

Pada acara pengukuhan Guru Besar ini, saya akan menyampaikan pidato pengukuhan dengan judul “Pendekatan Ma‘nā-cum-Maghzā: Paradigma, Prinsip dan Metode Penafsiran.” Pendekatan Ma‘nā-cum-Maghzā ini adalah pendekatan yang saya tawarkan dalam memahami dan menafsirkan ayat-ayat suci Al-Qur’an pada masa kontemporer ini, sehingga kita dapat merasakan bahwa Al-Qur’an itu ṣāliḥ li-kull zamān wa makān (sesuai dan relevan untuk segala zaman dan tempat). Adapun sistematika pemaparan pidato ini adalah (1) pendahuluan tentang tipologi pemikiran tafsir pada masa kontemporer, (2) pengertian Pendekatan Ma‘nā-cum-Maghzā, (3) paradigma penafsiran, (4) prinsip penafsiran dan (5) metode penafsiran.

Abstract

There is a growing recognition among certain individuals of the significance of integrating moderate Islam into the mainstream via diverse social media platforms. This article examines the methodologies employed by two prominent Indonesian social media platforms in February 2021, which consistently promote moderate Islam by interpreting Qur'anic verses. Communication technique theory is utilised to analyse the data derived from the uploads of each sample account from the moment the account was created until July 2021. The analysis provides two explanations.Firstly, the tafsiralquran.id account was founded by a group of students from UIN Sunan Ampel, UIN Sunan Kalijaga, and UIN Syarif Hidayatullah. Secondly, the quranreview account, which is led by students from Gadjah Mada University, employs two distinct approaches to mainstreaming moderate Islam. Thirdly, both accounts utilise informative-persuasive communication techniques, of which only five are present out of the six that are considered. By means of repeated insertion of key values and repetition of each account's motto and slogan, pervasive techniques are implemented. The tafsiralquran.id account seldom employs instructive techniques; in contrast, the QuranReview account makes extensive use of them via slang. Different models of human relations techniques are utilised in both accounts.

Abstract

Warisan Islam Nusantara: Tafsir Al-Qur’an Carakan dan Narasi Reformisme adalah salah satu kontribusi terbaru dalam bidang ini. Buku ini ditulis oleh Siti Mariatul Kiptiyah, alumnus Pascasarjana UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, Jurusan Interdisciplinary Islamic Studies, konsentrasi Hermeneutika Al-Qur’an. Buku ini berawal dari tesis penulis yang kemudian mendapatkan penghargaan Nusantara Academic Award (NAA) 2019 yang diselenggarakan oleh Nusantara Institute. Dalam pengantarnya, Sumanto Al Qurtuby, direktur Nusantara Institute, menulis bahwa NAA diadakan sebagai pendorong peneliti-peneliti junior untuk melakukan penelitian serius atas khazanah luhur warisan para leluhur bangsa. Setelah melewati seleksi yang ketat, tesis Siti Mariatul Kiptiyah ini diputuskan untuk mendapatkan penghargaan, dan kemudian diterbitkan oleh eLSA Press pada Maret 2020.

Abstract

The examination of maqāṣid al-qur'ān serves as the foundation for the interpretation of Qur'anic verses that are directed towards the welfare and advantage of humanity.  During the classical era, mufasirs frequently interpreted the Qur'anic verses in a manner that aligned with their theological doctrines, rather than adhering to the universal intent of the revealed verses. In contemporary times, the utilisation of the maqāṣid al-qur'ān approach has become prevalent as a means to mitigate the issue of subjective interpretation in various products. The study conducted by Al-'Alwānī on maqāṣid al-qur'ān holds significant importance in uncovering the universal objectives embedded within the Qur'ānic verses that remain veiled within the text. The present study centres its attention on the subsequent problem formulation: What is the methodology employed by Ṭāhā Jābir Al-'Alwānī in the examination of maqāṣid al-qur'ān, and how does the maqāṣid al-qur'ān methodology developed by Al-'Alwānī find practical application in the interpretation of verses within the Qur'an? What are the implications of Al-'Alwānī's maqāṣid al-qur'ān method for the study of tafsīr maqāṣidi in Indonesia? This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach to conduct library research, aiming to provide a comprehensive description and analysis of the collected data. The findings of this study demonstrate that Al-'Alwānī's ideas are grounded in the al-manhaj al-qur'ānī paradigm, which aims to develop the concept of al-Maqāṣid al-Qur'āniyyah al-'Ulyā al-Ḥakimah. This concept encompasses three fundamental principles found in the Qur'an: al-tawḥīd, al-tazkiyah, and al-'umrān. From a practical standpoint, it is possible to situate al-Maqāṣid al-Qur'āniyyah al-'Ulyā al-Ḥākimah within various spheres of existence, encompassing but not limited to the realms of economics, politics, social dynamics, and other pertinent domains. By employing Al-'Alwānī's approach, which is grounded in the principles of al-tawḥīd, al-tazkiyyah, and al-'umrān, the objective of promoting the welfare of individuals can be achieved, encompassing the cultivation of religious moderation. The present study carries significant implications for the hermeneutical analysis of the Qur'an, specifically in relation to the application of maṣlahah (public interest) and the overarching universal intent of the verse, rather than focusing on the theological validity of the mufasir (Qur'anic commentator). The method proposed by Al-Alwānī also plays a significant role in the advancement of tafsīr maqāṣidī in Indonesia, a subject that has been extensively explored and expanded upon by Abdul Mustaqim.

Abstract

This study examines the critical discourse and drafting orientation of the Tafsir Tematik Moderasi Beragama of the Ministry of Religious Affairs. This article analyses the approach taken by the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia in preparing the commentary. It evaluates the approach in terms of linguistic elements, interpretation style, sources of interpretation, methodology, systematics, and critical capacity. Additionally, it explores the author's interpretation tendency (mazhab). By examining the critical discourse pertaining to moderasi beragama as expressed in the tafsir work of a prominent religious institution in Indonesia, this article also seeks to illuminate this institution's efforts in this regard. According to the findings, this tafsir employs the mauḍuʿ interpretation method and is written in the style of adabi ijtimā'i (social society). This interpretation fails to foresee the linguistic elements that constitute the moderation theme. This occurs due to the dense localization in the content of the interpretation, which obscures the presence of the Asbāb al-Nuzūl within the related verses. The development of this interpretation is inextricably linked to the agency's intent and purpose as a response to the continued spread of radicalism in Indonesia.

Abstract

This article provides a detailed analysis of the presentation of Qur'anic stories in contemporary tafsir, with a specific focus on examining the nature and characteristics of modern tafsir. The current approach employed to differentiate classical and modern tafsir has primarily relied on periodization, making it inadequate in addressing the fundamental inquiry regarding the distinguishing characteristics of tafsir's various realities, encompassing both classical and modern iterations. The scholarly discourse surrounding contemporary tafsir subsequently transitions from examining the chronological classification of tafsir to exploring the distinct and varied nature of Qur'anic interpretation as an observable phenomenon. This article aims to provide a focused analysis of Tafsir Al-Azhar, a prominent contemporary exegesis authored by the Indonesian scholar Hamka. The primary objective of this study is to examine Hamka's exegesis of the narrative verses found in the Qur'an. The purpose of selecting this theme is to identify the unique characteristics of modern tafsir, which distinguish it from classical tafsir. This study aims to examine the process of producing modern tafsir, with a particular focus on the interpretation of Qur'anic verses that pertain to the narrative of Prophet Sulaymān, as well as Hārūt and Mārūt mentioned in Q. 2: 102. The contention put forth in this article posits that the categorization of commentaries as classical or modern cannot be definitively determined by the inclusion or exclusion of isrā'īliyāt, as it will invariably be intertwined with the interpretation of Quranic verses pertaining to narratives. However, contemporary scholars of exegesis have revisited a longstanding subject that has historically posed challenges within the Islamic community. This pertains to the question surrounding the validity and significance of isrā'īliyāt literature employed in the interpretation of religious texts. In this particular scenario, there is a tendency among scholars to dismiss isrā'īliyāt narrations that remain subject to debate among both classical and contemporary mufassirs, as well as narratives that lack rational basis.
