Abstract

This research discussed education and dialectology, examining the relation of Orang Rimba (OR) isolect in three places at Jambi Province. Different levels of education in each group of OR also influence language maintenance at proto-language. Language shift will occur when OR communicate with the villagers. The number of OR children who go to school does not guarantee a language shift. This study's benefit was to find out the proto vocabulary that still maintenance and shifted, to know the status of isolect from each group of OR to find out their kinship relations, and to know that education levels may not always affect vocabulary shifts. Dialectometry formula used from Guitar, Proto Austronesian (PAN) used theory from Wurm and Wilson, Proto Malayic (PM) used opinion from Adelaar. This study used qualitative and quantitative to answer different formulation of the problems. The result was: firstly, lexically and phonologically, the status of OR isolect in Jambi, including three regencies consisted of two dialects, four subdialects, and four speeches. There were 5 proto vocals and 19 proto consonants phonemes of OR in Jambi Province. The result of affixation identification at PM *tAr-; *mAN-; *(mb)Ar-; *-an; and *kA-an found innovation and no relic. Secondly, the reflex of PAN and PM at OR Malay dialect having the highest value in maintaining its proto-language (relics) occurred in DP 5,6 Muaro Jambi Regency. Thirdly, the number of children attending school in the villages of Nebang Parah and Nyogan was higher compared to other OR groups. The number of children attending school was in line with the high percentage of proto-languages used.

Abstract

The emergence of Indigenous poetry to the public domain has represented a milestone in their struggle to voice their communities' past and present experiences despite the ongoing ostracizing discourses from societies as the ones residing in Indo-America. In this sense, the present paper will offer an analysis of selected poetry by the Colombian indigenous poet Fredy Chikangana in the light of the transitivity system informed by the Systemic Functional Linguistics theory to unveil their experiential meaning construal. To attain this goal, a descriptive quantitative and qualitative research method approach was applied through which the different process types, participants, and circumstances arising from the corpus were systematically identified, calculated, and analyzed. Findings indicated that among the six transitivity process types, the material processes (47%) dominated his poems, followed by the relational realizations (27%) whereas the verbal, behavioral, existential, and mental processes were relatively low altogether, representing an overall occurrence of 26%. This reveals that the author’s primary goal was to employ poetry as an agentive act of resistance that originated from the context of the situation in which his Yanakuna community has been and is immersed.

Abstract

For university students, a skill in writing a good summary of articles, books and other sources is very important. Rhetorical Précis, a summarizing template that consists of four dense and direct sentences, can be used to compose a precise summary. This research aims at exploring EFL students’ perceptions of the use of Rhetorical Précis. Using a survey study, a five-degree questionnaire was spread out to 47 students who had attended the Critical Reading course at a reputable university in Surabaya, Indonesia. The data from the questionnaire were analyzed quantitatively. In addition, a semi-structured interview was held with four of the students. The interview was recorded and transcribed to meet the need of this study. The findings of this study showed that most of the students had positive perceptions of each element of Rhetorical Précis. In short, the students perceived that the Rhetorical Précis summarizing template could be used  by the students to make a summary of the original texts precisely and accurately.

Abstract

Motivation in reading is very important for engaging learners in reading activity which can affect better reading comprehension. However, without motivation in reading can affect the worst reading comprehension. Therefore, motivation in reading needs to be constructed first by the teachers. This study examined whether intrinsic and extrinsic reading motivation different among students and reading motivation in general. This study used a descriptive quantitative approach with a survey design. Eighty-five third-year students voluntarily returned the motivation reading questionnaire about their motivation in reading. The data were analyzed through descriptive statistics using SPSS 23 and criteria-referenced and norm-referenced interpretations. From the analysis, it was found that most extrinsic reading motivation dimension percentages were slightly higher than intrinsic motivation and reading motivation dimension percentages in general in high category percentage. This study concludes that the external reason likely influenced students' motivation in reading. The students who were more motivated to read in this study were because of the expectation to get appreciation from others, good grades, better information from the text, and to finish the assignment. It also implies the theory of motivating students to engage with English reading texts.

Abstract

Language is a communication tool for every human being and is used  to convey ideas, messages, intentions, feelings, opinions to others or even to meet daily needs. Intercultural communication is a communication that frequently occurs in the community. Pragmatics is a branch of linguistics that discusses aspects of language as a communication tool. When combined with culture, intercultural communication that occurs in society can be understood. In order for a speaker's language to be accepted in a society, he needs to fully understand the rules that apply in that society, including an understanding of the appropriate  use of certain language functions or speech acts. There is a close relationship between pragmatics and the concept of politeness. Politeness is fundamental in pragmatics because this is a universal phenomenon in the use of language in social contexts. The focus of this research is to identify the politeness strategies used by the two main characters in the Shanghai Knights film, Chon Wang and Roy O'Bannon, and analyze them in terms of the cultural background of the two main characters. This is a qualitative descriptive study. The results show that the politeness strategy used is strongly influenced by their cultural background. The strategy used most often is the bald-on record strategy while the Off-record politenses strategy is the strategy that is the least used by the two main characters of the film. This suggests that an understanding of politeness strategies is needed to realize face-threatening actions (FTA). In other words, politeness strategies are used to maintain continuity and success in communicating.

Abstract

The teaching and learning process changed into an online during the COVID-19 outbreak, and thus online evaluation became a requirement. This research examines the positive and negative effects of online assessment on students’ learning behaviour and how teachers prepare their teaching. This case study research included the result of questionnaire from thirty IC students followed by interview with three EFL teachers in the Intensive English Course (IC) program and six IC program students in one of Islamic University in Kediri. The small survey indicated that students have positive attitude toward the administration of online assessment. Furthermore, the outcomes of open-ended interviews showed that there were four themes for beneficial effects, including enhancing flexibility in assessment, improving evaluation versatility, building teachers and students’ awareness of preparing evaluation and cultivating students’ autonomous learning abilities. On the other hand, three themes for negative effects emerged from the online assessment, including complication of evaluation administration, reduced interaction between teachers and students, and anxiety in English test. The effects emerge from how teachers and students view the drawbacks of the online assessment itself. Positive effects lead to students’ learning better are caused by lesson taken from conducting the test; however, the negatives should be treated as challenges that will improve the teaching and learning. Finally, both teachers and students are ready to face online assessment in the future.

Abstract

The contribution of Project-based Learning (PbL) to 21st century learning skill development has been widely discussed by experts. This present qualitative research aims at exploring how PbL is applied in Lantern School of English Education (LSEE), an undergraduate program in Indonesia that produces an English teacher. In further, this research also looked at how the implementation enhanced the students’ 21st century learning skills comprising creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication. Considering those objectives, this research stood under qualitative approach and specifically employed case study design in order to investigate a single case which was project-based learning implementation in a particular context. The data were collected from interview, observation, and relevant documents which in this case, reflective essay, syllabus and students’ final projects. Observation and syllabus were used to investigate the implementation of PbL in LSEE, interviews and was to gather information about how the implementation cultivated students 21st century skills, while students’ works and reflective essay were to triangulate information from the other data collection techniques. After gaining the data, all were analysed using coding process to obtain the embedded themes as findings. The findings showed that the institution implemented PbL through the assessment, classroom activities, teacher roles, and student roles. Based on the students’ viewpoints, project-based assessment, group classroom activities, teachers being a facilitator, and students’ centeredness were successfully trained their ability on creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication. Conclusion and recommendation are also presented after the findings were discussed.

Abstract

This paper presents the students’ need analysis in Practical English Grammar course. The data were collected through questionnaires and interview by individual or group assessment. It involves 34 Indonesian undergraduate students who were majoring in English, took, join Grammar class and conducted classroom interaction in English teaching and learning process in IAIN Tulungagung, East Java, Indonesia. The data were analyzed using descriptive qualitative approach. The finding revealed some students’ perspectives on Practical English Grammar course (lack of learning media, ineffective teaching strategy, unsupportive class atmosphere, and Grammar as difficult course); some student-considered effective ways to learn Practical English grammar (YouTube, discussion, appropriate learning techniques, progress report, peer assessment, and game); and students’ results on their need analysis in learning Practical English Grammar in form of independent option on: learning media, learning strategy, learning material, and creating own questions and its answers.

Abstract

The article discusses the quality of language exploitation performed by the students of the English Language Study Program in the City of Tulungagung in writing English text stories. The data was collected for 4 months, starting May up to August 2020 in IAIN Tulungagung campus in the sense of data collection, through the observation. This study used case study design and involves 43 Indonesian undergraduate students and who were majoring in English. Narrative texts produced by the students were collected to be analyzed using a qualitative approach. Two aspects becoming the focus of discussion are the text structure and the text texture. The former represents how discourse units are selected and arranged in accordance to the narrative format, while the latter is related to how grammar is exploited and how words are selected for the stories. The results show that most of the students are very good in selecting and arranging discourse unit to build the stories. Meanwhile, they still show weaknesses in constructing grammar and selecting words for the stories. In these areas, inferences from Indonesian and Javanese languages happen.

Abstract

The new geological epoch, the Anthropocene reveals the negative impacts of human activities on the environment, which makes environmental education significant to deal with the negative effects of people on the environment and sustain the environment for the future of the world. As a branch of education, English language teaching (ELT) can contribute to environmental education in schools. For an effective environmental education in ELT, English language teachers should have enough knowledge on environmental issues and environmental awareness. One way for them to achieve this is preservice English language teacher education. The literature review indicated that any English language teacher education program (ELTEP) was not evaluated with an anthropocentric perspective. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the new ELTEP of Turkey with an anthropocentric perspective. It was designed as a qualitative study. The data was collected from the new ELTEP of Turkey and was content analyzed. The findings of the study have shown that environmental education is integrated with the new ELTEP through community services and sustainable development and education courses. The findings of the study were discussed and suggestions for further studies were made.
