Abstract

Reading implies something complex which needs the students to experience, foresee, examine, and admit information based on their background of knowledge. It will be more complex if they lack of Higher Order Thinking Skill (HOTS). HOTS improves reading comprehension and in consequence, the teachers must create a teaching and learning activities that encourage the implementation of HOTS by giving the students high questions found in a suitable textbook. This research was done in order to know the number of reading comprehension questions’ level between HOTS and LOTS. This research conducted using qualitative research approach and content analysis research design because this research focused on analyzing a textbook entitled “Bahasa Inggris” SMA/MA/SMK/MK for 12th grade students published by Ministry of Education and Culture in 2018. The result of this research found 142 reading comprehension questions in total and 83% of them are categorized as LOTS while 17% categorized as HOTS. It indicated that this textbook concentrated more on lower-level than higher-level thinking questions. In conclusion, the teacher must construct their own reading comprehension questions in order to fill the need of the students’ HOTS.

Abstract

As the Covid-19 pandemic progressed, such measures disrupted schools and universities. Leaders of educational institutions identified online learning as the best option for students and teachers to continue their education when they were unable to attend school. Although EFL students' and teachers’ attitudes toward online learning were much discussed in the context of higher education, little evidence addresses how EFL teachers practice digital platforms in various EFL programs. This study aimed to investigate numerous digital platforms utilized by EFL teachers for online learning and the purposes in using those platforms. It also tried to find out the most frequently used platforms during the pandemic. Using a qualitative approach, this study involved ten EFL teachers from the English Education Program and non-English Education Programs (General English and ESP) of all faculties in a state Islamic institute in Indonesia. Through a closed and open questionnaire, this study found that all EFL teachers combined multiple digital platforms (the college’s e-learning platform developed from Moodle, WhatsApp group, YouTube, Google Form, Google Meet, Zoom meeting, Google Drive, Socrative, and Quizziz) for various purposes in online classroom activities. In addition, college’s e-learning platform developed from Moodle, WhatsApp group, and YouTube were found to be the most frequently used due to the benefits for online learning. In light of these findings, a discussion of the research implications for institutions of higher education and potential future researchers is presented.

Abstract

The trend in investigating how teachers apply assessment in EFL classroom has been at the momentum. Using systematic literature review and PRISMA protocol, as many as 44 research articles during this past ten years were found. Their findings are beneficial for EFL learning. Research investigating students' perceptions of Classroom-Based Language Assessment (CBLA) shows that students tend to have positive perceptions of CBLA. On another topic, students' motivation to implement CBLA depends on how the test itself is carried out. Few studies states that CBLA contributes greatly to students’ achievement, what is there is that they learn a lot from CBLA, and they sufficiently understand CBLA's function for learning. From the EFL teachers’ perspective, assessment literacy is crucial for them because at least 75% of research is found to focus on the application of assessment literacy, and the practice of assessment is one-way and balanced. This article discusses on how researchers have been using CBLA benefited for EFL teaching and learning.

Abstract

Motivation is regarded as one of the major factors in language learning. Therefore, it is very important for teachers to recognize and foster individual students’ motivation as well as identify and respond to their concerns. This systematic literature review study aimed to portray students’ motivational level, orientation, and factors that are dominantly affecting motivation among higher education students in the Southeast Asia context. There are two stages comprised in this study—selecting the pool of review studies and discussing the outcomes of the review. Having thorough sorting and eliminating irrelevant and duplicate articles from three databases (Sciencedirect, ProQuest and ERIC), 15 articles derived from Indonesia, Thailand and East Timor were finally selected. This study, then, found that students’ motivational levels were generally high, and they were more extrinsically than intrinsically motivated, in which most students learn English for their future better job (careers). It was reported that the key factors motivated students in the learning process were friends, and teachers (personality, competence, teaching method), and somehow female students have a different motivational level and orientation from male students. Hence, the English teachers are suggested to reconsider using a method or anything which can improve students’ motivation for both female and male students, both extrinsically and intrinsically. further studies are recommended to include a broader search database and also area part of countries.

Abstract

This research aims to develop an interactive grammar assessment tool utilizing the Socrative platform for eleventh-grade students at MAN 2 Kota Kediri. The instruments used for data collection included a grammar test, validated by experts to ensure content validity, note taking for expert feedback. The Research and Development (R&D) method was employed, grounded in Borg and Gall’s (1983) model and Harris’s (1969) test construction approach, the study followed systematic phases including needs analysis, test design, expert validation, field testing, and item analysis, for its interactive and student-centered nature, which aligns with Deci and Ryan’s (2000) Self-Determination Theory. The developed test consisted of 25 multiple-choice grammar questions delivered via the Socrative platform. Validation results showed that 18 items (72%) were valid, meeting the threshold recommended by Crocker and Algina (2006) for early-stage field use. The reliability of the instrument was high, with a Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient of 0.882. Item analysis revealed that most items had acceptable discrimination power, while the difficulty index showed a predominance of easy items, indicating the need for more balanced test content. The interactive nature of the Socrative platform allows for immediate feedback, fostering student engagement and enhancing grammar comprehension. Additionally, the findings support the use of digital tools like Socrative to create valid, reliable, and engaging language assessments for EFL learners in secondary education.
