Abstract

Murder is essentially the culmination of an aggression which is still be a blind spot for the civilization of mankind. The incidence is quite high, but studies that specifically review it are still small. This research intends to deepen the crime of murder by focusing on causal factors, psychological dynamics and the impact of murder behavior on the perpetrators. Adolescents were chosen as subjects because murder cases conducted by teenagers also showed considerable numbers. The study was designed using a qualitative approach, a phenomenology of forensics which is a phenomenological approach that specifically reveals forensic cases related to murder offenses. Eight subjects participated in research conducted at the Kutoarjo Child Prison. Data in this study were collected through obeservation and interview with subject, psychological testing, home visit, and completed by an interview with prison officer and prison document data. The collected data interview is then analyzed using data explication method. This study finds that the dynamics of family factor interaction, social environment, friends, drug and alcohol abuse, socioeconomic status, education, individual psychological condition, availability of weapons, and the characteristics of the victim causing the killing behavior in adolescents. The impact of murder for the offender varies, depends on the background of the case.

Abstract

The increasing number of traffic accident is caused by the decreasing of driver situational awareness. Divided attention is one of several factors that affect situation awareness. This experiment was to study the effects of listening to the music or reading short message sent to participant’s mobile phone on participant’s situational awareness while they drove car simulator. Thirty subjects were randomly divided into two groups, namely: (a) music group. The subjects were asked to listen to Ed Sheeran pop music when they drove city car simulator, and (b) mobile phone group. In this condition the subjects received and replied short message on their mobile phones at third, fifth, eighth, and tenth minutes during driving car simulator. Situational awareness was measured by SAGAT (Situation Awareness Global Assessment Technique). The simulation was stopped when SAGAT questionnaire was distributed to the subjects at fifth and tenth minutes. The t test statistical analysis showed that there was a significant difference in situation awareness between the two groups (t= 5.750; p= .001). Music group showed higher situation awareness than mobile phone group. The use of mobile phone while driving is more distracting attention than listening to music.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe mother’s parenting in developing adaptive ability on children with moderate to severe mental retardation. This research was a qualitative research. The subjects were three mothers who have children with moderate to severe mental retardation at SDLB X Jakarta. The subjects were selected using purposive sampling technique. Data were collected using interview and observation. The observation data was only used to support the suitability of interview data. The results showed that three participants had less positive parenting in developing students' adaptive abilities. This was shown from the acceptance and demandingness of the mother to each child. Three participants taught with verbal and provide direct assistance to student. This situation happens when students was unable to perform daily activities. The subjects also had no specific rules and consequences to support students' adaptive skills. Several factors that influence those condition were unappropriate expectation of mothers with their children and limited knowledge about characteristic of children with mental retardation. Thus, some areas of students' adaptive ability didn’t grow optimally.

Abstract

Measuring school well-being in elementary school student is important. The experience of students at school will affect their perception, motivation and hope for their academic life in the future. We used Tripartite School Well-Being Model, based on the interaction among three aspects, namely school satisfaction, positive affect and negative affect. The aim of the study is to identify factors predicting the emergence of student’s positive affect and negative affect in elementary school. A total of 118 elementary school students of Class 6 in Bandung took a part in this study as respondent. The variables in this study were measured using three questionnaires: School Satisfaction, Positive Affect Student at School, and Negative Affect Student at School. Descriptive and inferential statistics through regression analysis was conducted to test the hypothesis. The results show that peer relationship, teacher-student relationship, and academic learning significantly contribute to build the positive affect of the student. Whereas, only the peer relationship predicted the negative affect of the student. This finding brings some practical implication for the educational process. The integrated multidimensional program which involves teacher, parents, peers, and student is crucial to promote student well-being at school.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the characteristics of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), consisting of both verbal and numerical subtests. We used a descriptive quantitative approach by describing the characteristics of SAT based on the degree of item difficulty, item discrimination index, pseudoguessing index, test information function and standard error measurement. The data are responses of the SAT instrument, collected from 1,047 subjects in Yogyakarta using the documentation technique. Data were then analyzed by Item Response Theory (IRT) approach with the help of the BILOG program on all logistic parameter models, preceded by identifying item suitability with the model. Analysis concludes that: verbal subtest tends to compliment the 2-PL and 3-PL model, meanwhile, numerical subtest only fit the 2-PL model. Majority items of SAT have a good characteristic on index of item difficulty, item discrimination, and pseudoguessing, and based of test information function, SAT is accurate to be used in the 1-PL, 2-PL, and 3-PL IRT models for all level of ability.

Abstract

Self-perceived employability is individual’s perceived ability to get sustainable employment appropriate to one’s qualification level. Previous researches demonstrated the importance of self-regulation in shaping self-perceived employability in emerging adulthood, when career aspirations have a significant role in career-related decision-making process. However, the relationships between career aspirations, self-regulation, and self-perceived employability among university students were rarely known. This study examined a theoretical model, whether self-regulation served as a partial mediator between career aspirations and self-perceived employability. Using a convenience sampling, we involved 600 university students who were at their second, fourth, sixth, eighth, and tenth semester (68% female, M age = 19.97 years; SD = 5.57) from a university in Semarang. Structural equation modeling demonstrated that career aspirations were associated with self-perceived employability directly and indirectly via self-regulation. It means, the higher students career aspirations, the better their self-regulation and self-perceived employability. Self-regulation also leads to higher self-perceived employability. We interpreted the findings of this study form developmental and goal-setting perspective. To promote self-perceived employability, students are recommended to boost their career aspirations and develop a good self-regulation skill.

Abstract

Death as an existential problem has given birth to two large spectra: fear of death or accepting it as an inevitable truth. This study aimed to examine the extent to which an individual's fear of death could be predicted by anticipation of the future (life orientation) and tendency of being here-and-now (trait mindfulness). Self-reported questionnaires of life orientation in optimism-pessimism continuum, trait mindfulness, and fear of death were presented through cloud-based online survey (N = 218 students, 73.585% females, average age 20.840 years, SD = 1.777). Hierarchical regressions analyses revealed that (i) optimistic orientation predicted a higher level of fear of death, (ii) trait mindfulness accounted for significant variance in fear of death after accounting for life orientation, and (iii) trait mindfulness did not moderate the link between life orientation and fear of death. The role of trait mindfulness was consistent in predicting lower levels of fear of death and dying of self as well as death of others, but not of dying of others. Additionally, women reported a higher level of fear of death, independent of life orientation and trait mindfulness. These individual differences should be taken into consideration when designing strategies to manage fear of death.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the meaning of shame in the young generation of Jakarta. Shame as one of the basic emotions, continues to evolve according to the age level and social changes that occur. The theory used is social representation theory with approach of social representation structure that will find central core and peripheral element of shame. This study used mixed method design: quantitative method with hierarchized evocation technique and qualitative method by conducting interview. The hierarchized evocation technique was performed on 252 participants using a questionnaire. While interviews were conducted on 13 participants which explore further about the shame. Participants were obtained by using snowball and accidental sampling technique, with the criteria as followed: students, at least fifth semester and maximum age is 25. The results show that the meaning of shame in Jakarta young generation is related to self-doubt, events that lead to negative judgment, unideal physical appearance, violation of moral principles and mismatch on etiquette. These five attributes are very strongly attached to the collective memory of the younger generation.
