Abstract

The aims of the research were to analyze the psychometric characteristics of a set Differential Aptitude Test (DAT) consisting of five subtests, they are: numerical, abstract reasoning, space relation, and mechanics. This research using quantitative research method. The data ware collected from documentation pschological testing in UNY. The total data of the study are 2118 youth students in Yogyakarta. The analysis of psychometric characteristics of instrument using classical approach. The characteristic instrument are index of difficulty, index of  disciminancy, effectifitas distractor, and reliability coefficient. The data were analyzed with Microcat ITEMAN 3.0 program. The result of analysis can be concluded that there are many information about item characteristic. The items characteristik have variation in index difficulty. Majority items have good index discimination, and many items are bad or need improvement. The items of abstract reasoning subtes have most distractor option which are not functioning properly, and all subtests in DAT instruments are reliable.

Abstract

The difference in student’s learning achievement is influenced by multiple factors such as school readiness and intelligence. This research aims to examine school readiness and intelligence predict on learning achievement. The data were collected by employing intelligence test and student’s academic report. The subjects of this research were 104 students (52 male and 52 female students aged 7-8) of grade 1 of Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Negeri 1 Bantul, Yogyakarta, academic year 2016/2017. The collected data were then analyzed by linear regression statistics. The results show school readiness and intelligence predict learning achievement.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the characteristics of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), consisting of both verbal and numerical subtests. We used a descriptive quantitative approach by describing the characteristics of SAT based on the degree of item difficulty, item discrimination index, pseudoguessing index, test information function and standard error measurement. The data are responses of the SAT instrument, collected from 1,047 subjects in Yogyakarta using the documentation technique. Data were then analyzed by Item Response Theory (IRT) approach with the help of the BILOG program on all logistic parameter models, preceded by identifying item suitability with the model. Analysis concludes that: verbal subtest tends to compliment the 2-PL and 3-PL model, meanwhile, numerical subtest only fit the 2-PL model. Majority items of SAT have a good characteristic on index of item difficulty, item discrimination, and pseudoguessing, and based of test information function, SAT is accurate to be used in the 1-PL, 2-PL, and 3-PL IRT models for all level of ability.

Abstract

Hope plays an important role in individuals’ attempts to overcome various problems in a positive way and with positive results. This study aims to examine the effect of parent-child attachment on the existence of hope. The research method involved a quantitative approach. The accidental sampling technique was used to determine the sample and identified 400 adolescents consisting of junior and senior high school students aged 12-19 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Parent-child attachment was measured using the Parental Bonding Instrument, while expectation was measured using Snyder's Hope Scale. The data were analyzed using linear regression to predict the relationship between parent and child attachment and expectations. The results show that warm and loving care from the father (B = 0.37, p < .001] and the mother (B = 0.47, p < .001], as well as the provision of autonomy by the father (B = 0.52, p < .001] and mother (B = 0.38, p <.01] proved to be predictors of adolescent expectations, while over-protection from the father (B = 0.03, p> .05]) and the mother (B = -0.18, p> .05) were not predictors of the existence of hope. The implications of the research results could serve as a reference for the parenting practice and guidance to adolescents both in the contexts of family and school education.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the effectiveness of the use of Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory (RST) towards increased motivation to learn students through group counseling services. This research uses quantitative approach method with non-equivalent control group design.  The research sample amounted to 14 students who have motivational learning problems that have not been expected. The data collection techniques in this study used scale techniques using purposive sampling. Data analysis techniques using Wilxocon test and Mann-Whitney Test. The results of this research show that Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory (RST) through group counseling services proved to be an effective learning motivation for students.

Abstract

Abstract This study was aimed to test statistically the relationship between gender bias and teacher’s attribution towards student’s successes and failures, to measure the strength of influence of the aforementioned variable on the dependent variable, and to explore empirically the existence of such bias in teacher’s attribution. Three hypotheses rose from theoretical analyses to the problem. Firstly, there are relationship between gender bias and teacher’s attribution towards student’s successes and failures. Secondly, there are significant difference between teacher’s attribution toward male and female students in which achievement of male students more attributed to their internal capability, whereas female student’s achievement attributed to external factors, which are degree difficult of the task and luckiness. Thirdly, there are significant differences between teacher’s perception, in respect to their sexes, about suitable areas of career for male and female students. This research was based on quantitative approach, where correlation and difference tests are used. The sample was 68 teachers of Senior High Schools in Yogyakarta, which was chosen according to predetermined criteria. Results showed that level of gender bias among the respondents was low, there was no significant correlation between gender bias and teacher’s attribution towards student’s successes and failures. Moreover samples tended to attribute internal factors as the causes of student’s achievement, in other words, factors found not to be favorite in teacher’s attribution. In addition, this research found that there were differences in their perception about suitable field of career for students, in respects to their sexes, in which those required physical strength and mobility perceived as more suitable for male, such as technical works. On the other hand, fields which require artistry and laboratory works perceived as more suitable for male students. Keywords: gender bias, teacher’s attribution towards student’s successes and failures

Abstract

The association between physical activity and mental health have been found bidirectional in the literature. However, evidence of this bidirectional association is lacking from developing countries. This study was aimed at investigating the bidirectional relationship between physical activity frequency and mental health in old age using data from the Indonesia Family Life Survey with a sample of 8,323 old individuals aged between 45 and 90 years.  The results revealed that the bidirectional association holds true in old age. Specifically, an increase of one unit in frequency of physical activity is associated with a decrease of 14% in depression after controlling for a set of confounding variables. Similarly, an increase of one unit in depression is associated with a decrease of 3.4% in frequency of physical activity. The results of this study suggest that health policies should take into account the importance of the frequency of physical activity. Keywords: frequency of physical activity, mental health, depression, old age, Indonesia
