Abstract

The Hikayat Raja Kalawandu is an ancient manuscript in the collection of the Houghton Library owned by Harvard University. This script, coded MS Indo 27, tells about the heroism of Putera Jaya Pati, who was the son of King Kalawandu. Putera Jaya Pati is described as a potential leader who has leadership values. It is necessary to study the manuscript entitled Hikayat Raja Kalawandu. This study aims to present the Hikayat Raja Kalawandu by knowing and expressing the leadership values ​​of Putera Jaya Pati. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with a philological approach. The results of the analysis in this study indicate that there are 4 leadership values, namely the value of hard work, courage, intelligence, and religion. Therefore, the disclosure of leadership values ​​can be used as a source of insight and guidance for today's leaders.

Abstract

Urang Awak 'Orang Minang' is an ethnicity in West Sumatra Province, Indonesia, and is also widely known for its traditional food in Padang Restaurant. The naming of the Babiambo restaurant in Jakarta which is identified as a typical Minang Babiambo restaurant, babi 'babi' and ambo 'saya' (my pig) is allegedly considered an insult to the identity of the Minang people. This study discusses the naming of the restaurant "Babiambo" and its relation to the philosophy of "Adaik basandi Syarak, Syarak basandi Kitabullah" as a guideline for Minang society based on forensic linguistic glasses with cognitive linguistic analysis and semiotics. Qualitative research methods with a descriptive approach were used in this study. Data collection techniques are carried out by observation methods and literature studies. The results of this study found that the naming of the padang restaurant "Babiambo" from cognitive and semiotic analysis showed that there was no insult to Minang identity in the process of its formation.

Abstract

This research is a qualitative descriptive study with a source of data being the novel "Usfur min asy-Syarq" with its translation titled "Bercinta di antara Ruang Sakral dan Profan". This research uses a translation critique approach proposed by Newmark. The research method in this study uses the free sima method with a purposive sampling technique. The results of this study show that the translation of this novel has many advantages in terms of readability, as the translator presents the story of the novel with beautiful and easily understood language. The translation technique most often used in this research is discursive creation. However, in terms of accuracy, this translation has many shortcomings, this is due to the translator removing many parts of the source language so that it is not translated, and also because the translator frequently shifts the meaning, this is due to the translator translating words and phrases that are too far from their original meaning in the source language.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to reveal the real meaning behind the lyrics of the song "lir Ilir" by Sunan Kalijaga. This is important because the song is considered by some as a sign that the "physical resistance" of Muslims during the 14th century AD against the hegemony of Hindu power has begun. In fact, in several studies on the beginning of Islam in the archipelago, it is always stated that Islam entered the archipelago in a "peaceful way". This research uses qualitative method with Saussure's semiotic approach. Meanwhile, the material object of this research is the lyrics of the song "lir ilir" by Sunan Kalijaga, while the formal object is Saussure's semiotics. Saussure's theory can explain that language is a sign system in which there are signifiers and signifieds. Of course, this process relates to song lyrics and the real world. The result of this research is that the lyrics of the song "lir Ilir" have the meaning of awakening which means that the lyrics of the song are intended to arouse the spirit and focus in worship so that it can form the souls of true leadership. In addition, so that humans are free from laziness so that they can become good humans, namely humans who can provide benefits to other humans.

Abstract

The research aims to analyze the conceptual metaphors within the fruit lexicons found in Minangkabau proverbs and identify the cultural values of the Minangkabau community through the proverbs. This study uses the qualitative descriptive method and the specific element sorting technique as the data collection method. The data used in this study were obtained from the book of proverbs written by H. Idrus Hakimy Dt. Rajo Penghulu and analyzed using the conceptual metaphor theory developed by Lakoff and Johnson, along with Kovecses’s approach. The results indicate that the conceptualization of fruits in Minangkabau proverbs reflects the relationships between humans and other humans, as well as between humans and God. The cultural values reflected in the proverbs include diversity, community life, and a sense of dependence on God. The fruit lexicon involved in this conceptual metaphor analysis includes durian, jackfruit (cubadak), mengkudu (mingkudu), and coconut (mumbang, kalapo, and karambia).

Abstract

This research aims to get the understanding of the representation and dynamics of gendered power relation in the film "Death on the Nile" (2022), by focusing on the social roles and norms that influence the gender relation among characters. The research applies Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) which enables us to go deeper on the power relation of the characters. The CDA framework consists of the comprehensive analysis, from the micro (text), mezzo (production), and macro (social context) analysis that can be applied in analysis of the film. The results show that gendered power relations in this film are depicted through the power in marriage relationship, where the concepts of control and ownership reflect the social norms of the society. Power in love relationship also play an important role in relationship dynamics, highlighting how strong feelings and dependency can influence the social practice. In addition, power in parent-children relationship can continue even after children become adults. These findings provide a foundation for further research on the representation of gender-based power relations in film, taking into account the other aspects such as the social, economic, and cultural factors that influence gender representation.

Abstract

This study aims to understand the ideology of news texts in the online media Kompas.com and Minanews.net in reporting on the polemic against the Israeli national team's rejection of the U-20 World Cup in Indonesia which sparked debate and disagreements. Many groups have pros and cons against Israel in competing in the U20 World Cup which was held in Indonesia. This research method uses descriptive qualitative analysis and this article uses the Fairclough three-dimensional framework approach as an analytical tool and selects news about the rejection of the Israeli national team based on two different news media on Kompas.com and Minanews.net. After analysis, it was found that Kompas.com tended to support and did not make a problem of Israel competing in the U20 World Cup competition and found no objections directed at the Israeli national team, while Minanews.net tended to support rejecting the Israeli national team so that they would not be given the right to compete in the U20 World Cup in Indonesia.

Abstract

This research focuses on compiling the faunal lexicon contained in the Limo Koto pantun. The pantun sample taken was Pantun Atui. Knowledge of this fauna is important in the midst of an ever-changing nature and environment. The main theory used in this research is oral literature theory which is used to collect data and ecolinguistic theory to analyze the data that has been obtained. The data collection method in this research uses interviews, notes and recording methods. To analyze the data, descriptive analytical methods were used. The results of this research found 25 faunal lexicons in Pantun Atui. Based on the culture of the Kampar people as owners of pantun, the 23 fauna lexicons can be categorized into three types of lexicons, namely the Bawuo fauna lexicon, the Daghek fauna lexicon and the Kampau fauna lexicon. Meanwhile, there are 2 fauna lexicons that can be classified into marine fauna, namely swordfish and dolphins. These two marine fauna lexicons indicate that although Kampar is synonymous with rivers or kampau, it has connections with other sea-based areas.

Abstract

This research discusses three main things, namely the polite language forms of presidential candidates in the first debate, the types of politeness strategies of presidential candidates in debates, and the social phenomenon of the forms and types of politeness used by presidential candidates. The data source is an official video from the general election commission (KPU) entitled First Debate of Presidential Candidates for the 2024 Election on YouTube which is located at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNO0YS846kU. The data is in the form of utterances containing polite acts from the three presidential candidates. This research uses a qualitative study framework with a pragmatic approach, especially politeness theory. The method used is listening, free speech. To make analysis easier, this method is supported by note-taking techniques. Data analysis was carried out through four stages, namely data collection, data reduction, data presentation followed by the conclusion of the research results. The research results show that 1) the form of politeness that dominates the debate is positive politeness. Negative politeness and false politeness have equal dominance. Overt politeness did not appear in the debate; 2) the strategy that often appears is the strategy of greeting with a system of familiarity, promises and thanks; 3) The social phenomenon that emerged from these two meetings was that the contestants paid their respects by acknowledging the existence of the presidential candidates. This recognition is reduced to a greeting strategy to show closeness, deliver political promises, and convey words of thanks to other parties.
