Abstract

Riparian communities in West Kalimantan face a persistent dilemma between ecological risks and the need to sustain their living space. This study aims to analyze how riverbank communities construct their existence and resistance amid structural constraints, ecological pressures, and deeply rooted cultural ties. The research employs a qualitative approach, drawing on secondary data and social media discourse. Data were analyzed using content analysis and in-depth interpretive techniques to understand the social practices of riverbank communities. The findings reveal three main preconditions that drive communities to remain and resist relocation policies: (1) river ecology as a space for learning and adaptation; (2) structural constraints that limit mobility and alternative settlement options; and (3) the river as a source of collective identity encompassing memory, emotion, and meaning of life. These findings indicate that survival strategies are not solely based on rational-economic considerations but are also shaped by riparian habitus formed through historical and sociological processes. This study concludes that the existence and resistance of riverbank communities are produced through a dynamic interplay of ecological, structural, and cultural factors that cannot be separated. As a result, top-down relocation policies tend to be ineffective as they overlook the cultural dimensions and lived experiences of the communities. This study recommends the adoption of an emic and holistic approach in policymaking, emphasizing participatory engagement with communities and integrating social, cultural, and ecological dimensions in a comprehensive manner.

Abstract

The research examines the empowerment of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) that are often hampered by challenges in the business management process, adoption of digital technology and limited social networks. Aiming to analyze the relationship between social relations and digital innovation on MSME empowerment, the research study focuses on the strategic role of the Lampung Upscale MSME Community as a partner supporting the development of MSMEs in Lampung Province. A descriptive qualitative approach was used with data collected through observation, interviews and documentation of activities carried out by the community. The results showed that the Lampung Upscale MSME Community has 227 members (215 micro, 12 small, and 0 medium) spread across 11 districts or cities with the highest dominance of MSMEs engaged in the food sector. This community conducts social media management training and capacity building for MSME products offline or online, as well as providing assistance and market access among members. The utilization of social relations and digital innovation has proven effective in supporting various community activities, thus increasing the competitiveness of MSMEs in Lampung. However, the results of the study identified that the social network that was built was not fully optimal due to the obstacles of a wide area coverage and weak coordination between local, central and community government institutions, making it difficult for MSME actors to recognize the role of each stakeholder in the program that MSME actors wanted to encourage.

Abstract

This study aims to understand how the cultural practices and social structures of the South Bangka community are formed, sustained, transformed, and maintained in the contemporary social context. Using an ethnographic approach, this study examines cultural dynamics such as traditional customs, religious rituals, household economics, gender relations, kinship systems, and social changes resulting from modernization, migration, and industrial expansion. This study also examines local social structures, including kinship relations, informal hierarchies, patronage, economic structures, and power relations that bind individuals and groups in everyday social life. The results show that the cultural practices of the South Bangka community are flexible but still maintain core values such as mutual cooperation, solidarity, social harmony, and respect for ancestors. Modernization does not necessarily eliminate tradition but encourages the community to adapt cultural practices to the needs of the times. In addition, social structures have been shown to play an important role in shaping patterns of interaction, role distribution, and conflict resolution mechanisms. Interpersonal and group relationships are built through kinship networks, village communities, religious associations, and work relationships, all of which influence social stability and the formation of collective identity. This study concludes that cultural practices and social structures in South Bangka are closely interrelated.

Abstract

Village governments, within a special framework of autonomy, have the authority to manage local natural resources, implement development programs, and provide public services. Juridically and normatively, villages are mandated to empower communities, encourage participation, and contribute to national development based on local wisdom. The synergy between the village government and the Merah Putih Cooperative, through the application of the concept of entrepreneurial governance, is expected to encourage community economic empowerment through cooperatives. This study aims to examine the transformation process of village government management towards entrepreneurial principles by optimizing the role of the Red and White Cooperative as an instrument for village development and community empowerment. The research method used is qualitative, with an analytical descriptive approach. The study also used a literature-based method. The findings suggest that the transformation of village governance towards entrepreneurial governance characterized by innovation, tangible results, and economic empowerment can drive adaptive and innovative governance models that prioritize community economic capacity building.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze and describe the social attitudes of Sociology of Religion students at IAKN Tarutung, who are K-Pop enthusiasts, in their interactions within their residential environments. Using a descriptive qualitative method, data were collected through observation, structured in-depth interviews, and documentation of subjects active in K-Pop fandoms. The findings indicate that student involvement in these communities contributes positively to character building and social integration. This phenomenon is driven by the students' ability to contextually interpret pop culture symbols, allowing them to internalize moral and religious values into their daily behavior. Fandom activities were found to strengthen solidarity, social identity, and group cohesion through collective social actions. Sociologically, the consumption of foreign culture does not degrade local identity; instead, it serves as an instrument for reinforcing prosocial behavior aligned with local community norms. These results confirm that participation in popular culture can coexist with individual character development and social harmony.

Abstract

This study analyses the utilization of remittances among migrant families in Bontominasa Village, Bulukumba Regency, through the perspective of Max Weber’s social action theory. The research focuses on the socio-economic background of migrant families, patterns of remittance utilization, and their implications for household welfare. This study departs from the social phenomenon of labour migration caused by economic pressures and limited employment opportunities in rural areas. Weber’s theory of social action is used to explain that migration and remittance utilization represent rational-instrumental actions undertaken by families to achieve economic security and social mobility. This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with eight remittance-receiving families, observations, and documentation. The findings indicate that migration decisions were strongly influenced by economic hardship following mass layoffs in the rubber plantation sector. Remittances were mainly utilized for household consumption, including basic daily needs, children’s education, healthcare, housing improvement, and debt repayment. In addition, a smaller portion of remittances was allocated for productive purposes such as small business capital, livestock investment, and savings. The study also found that remittances contributed to improving family welfare and social status within the community. However, dependence on remittance income and the social consequences of prolonged family separation remain significant challenges for migrant households. The study implies the importance of strengthening financial literacy, productive economic empowerment, and community-based social support programs to encourage more sustainable and welfare-oriented remittance management among migrant families.
