Abstract

The Tesso Nilo Forest conflict in Riau Province, marked by forest encroachment, illegal oil palm expansion, and threats to Sumatran elephant and tiger habitats, has become a significant environmental issue in digital spaces. This study aims to analyze Greenpeace Indonesia’s narrative construction of the Tesso Nilo conflict, identify audience responses, and explain the formation of Networked Publics on Instagram @greenpeaceid. This research uses a qualitative approach with a netnographic method. Data were collected from Greenpeace Indonesia’s Instagram post, including captions, visual content, audience comments, and mention networks. The analysis applies the Networked Publics framework, consisting of awareness building, information circulation, public engagement, mobilization, and digital advocacy, supported by Social Network Analysis to map communication networks among users. The findings show that Greenpeace constructs the Tesso Nilo conflict as an ecological crisis, a failure of environmental governance, and an issue of environmental justice. Audience responses include campaign support, criticism of the government, concern over forest destruction, and calls for collective action. SNA strengthens the findings by revealing mention networks, public attention toward specific actors, and discursive communities discussing forest destruction, state responsibility, and ecological restoration. This study concludes that Greenpeace Indonesia’s digital activism forms Networked Publics through connected attention, audience interaction, information circulation, and digital advocacy.

Abstract

The presence of social media has transformed the journalistic workflow in Indonesia, from planning, production, to news distribution. This research aims to uncover the dynamics of shifting journalistic values in the working practices of Indonesian cyber media as they interact with social media, through a case study of Tribunnews.com. The research uses a qualitative approach with a constructivist paradigm and a descriptive qualitative method.  The theoretical framework used is market-driven journalism, professional-driven journalism, and the theory of social responsibility media. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 13 informants from various editorial levels to obtain a comprehensive understanding of journalistic practices in the newsroom. Data analysis was conducted using Creswell's qualitative analysis stages. The research results show that social media encourages tension between market orientation and professional values in journalistic practice. On one hand, virality, trending topics, and traffic potential increasingly influence the determination of news value and coverage priorities. On the other hand, Tribunnews.com strengthens various professional mechanisms to maintain journalistic quality, such as enhancing verification standards, developing fact-checking units, implementing stricter editorial oversight, and respecting intellectual property rights. These findings indicate that the shift in journalistic values is not a replacement of professional values by market logic, but rather an ongoing negotiation between algorithmic demands, audience interests, and social media responsibilities within the digital ecosystem.

Abstract

This study examines Dedi Mulyadi’s self-representation through a grounded, humanistic communication style enriched with Sundanese cultural symbols on his YouTube channel. The urgency of this research lies in understanding contemporary discursive practices that combine local narratives, cultural values, and netizen participation in shaping leadership images in the era of digital democracy. This study aims to analyze the discursive construction of Dedi Mulyadi’s communication style on social media and the image of an inclusive leader formed through symbolic interaction, visual content, and personal narratives. Using Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis model, data were collected through observations of content uploaded on Kang Dedi Mulyadi Channel from April to July 2025 and netizen comments. The findings show that simple diction and Sundanese cultural symbols are strategically used to blur class boundaries between elites and citizens. Non-protocol content production functions as a political communication strategy to control public narratives. At the social practice level, this phenomenon reflects digital populism that appears egalitarian but continues to reproduce asymmetric power relations, paternalistic hegemony, and patron-client culture.

Abstract

This study examines how the Protocol Subdivision of Banyumas Regency supports the construction of the image of regional leaders in official government events. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with protocol officers, field observations, and supporting documents during the leadership transition from the Regent and Deputy Regent to the Acting Regent. The analysis employed Jones and Pittman’s impression management tactics as coding categories, while Goffman’s dramaturgy was used to interpret front stage, back stage, audience, performance team, and impression failure. The findings show that ingratiation and self-promotion are the most prominent tactics, appearing through arrangements of public interaction, local symbols, visual documentation, achievement narratives, and symbolic moments in official events. Exemplification, supplication, and intimidation were not prominent in the data. This study contributes to government communication studies by positioning protocol as a strategic actor in managing leadership representation, while acknowledging that the findings are limited to the internal perspective of protocol officers.

Abstract

Social media has transformed the way mothers interpret and present parenting practices and family literacy. The Bookstagram community on Instagram has become a space for sharing reading experiences, book recommendations, as well as negotiating identities and mother-child relationships in digital public spaces, which marks a shift in parenting from the private realm to mediated social practice. This research explores and maps how millennial Bookstagram mothers interpret reading activities with children in daily life, family literacy practices, and negotiating roles as mothers, readers, and creators of literacy content. The method used is qualitative with Max van Manen's phenomenological approach. Data was obtained from in-depth interviews and digital observation. As a result, digital motherhood for millennial mothers on Bookstagram is a practice of reading and sharing literacy content and becomes a way of presenting oneself, forming the meaning of motherhood, and passing on values across generations in digital culture. Further research is recommended involving other subjects and more diverse methodological approaches to expand understanding of the relationship between literacy, motherhood, and digital identity.

Abstract

This study examines post-disaster mitigation communication between the housing developer of Pondok Gede Permai, Bekasi, and the affected residents. The primary objective is to identify optimal communication strategies and analyze their effectiveness in facilitating dialogue, resolving conflicts, and achieving sustainable solutions for the affected community. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach through in-depth interviews and participatory observation, involving the developer, residents, and local government as key informants. Data validity was enhanced through source and method triangulation. Findings reveal that mitigation communication remains dominated by a one-way, instructive pattern with limited transparency, leading to communication gaps and resident distrust. Although communication accelerated the distribution of logistical aid, major obstacles included a lack of empathy, the absence of sustainable official channels, and ineffective conflict resolution regarding housing compensation. Residents tended to trust informal community networks over official information from the developer and demanded a dedicated forum for open dialogue. The study concludes that an Inclusive Communication Model based on Dialogic Theory and Risk Communication is needed to minimize conflicts, enhance transparency, and accelerate social recovery.

Abstract

In the midst of current technological developments, various new gambling advertising trends have emerged; one of which is manipulating videos of public figures, such as Mata Najwa, Raffi Ahmad, Atta Halilintar, and many more, with artificial intelligence (AI). The AI-manipulated content is then distributed through social media, such as Facebook. This study aims to explore message strategies, as well as see the level of engagement of social media users in responding to gambling advertising content. The method used is netnography. The data analyzed was taken from the researcher's Facebook social media during November 2024–January 2025, with a focus on indicators of likes, comments, and shares. The data collected were analysed using a qualitative descriptive approach, referring to the Elaborate Likelihood Model (ELM) persuasive message theory and consumer engagement. The results of this study indicate that public figures in gambling advertisements aim to build the credibility of persuasive narrative content in advertisements. The narrative and presence of popular actors in gambling advertisements greatly influence the level of social media user engagement in the content.
