Abstract

Therapeutic communication is a specific form of communication practised by healthcare professionals, particularly nurses, with the aim of helping patients understand their condition and alleviating the mental and emotional strain they experience. Therapeutic communication involves efforts made by caregivers when communicating with older people who have physical and psychological limitations. The aim of this study is to examine the patterns of therapeutic communication between carers and older adults, as well as the barriers faced by carers at the Pangudi Luhur Integrated Centre of the Ministry of Social Affairs in Bekasi. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method. Data collection was carried out through in-depth interviews and observation at the Pangudi Luhur Integrated Centre of the Ministry of Social Affairs in Bekasi. The informants in this study were four caregivers who interact with the elderly daily. The key informants in this study were a geriatric nurse, a care assistant, and three elderly residents at the Pangudi Luhur Integrated Centre of the Ministry of Social Affairs in Bekasi. The results of the study indicate that therapeutic communication between carers and the elderly is proceeding well. A new finding in this study is the PRIM therapeutic communication pattern (persuasion, repetition, instruction and motivation). The PRIM communication approach adopted by these carers can improve the quality of life of the elderly.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the symbolic world of visually impaired persons through communicative action in the digital public sphere. The research employed a qualitative narrative approach within an interpretive paradigm. Data were obtained from YouTube videos in 2025 featuring narratives of visually impaired individuals in Indonesia. Data collection techniques included digital observation, video transcript documentation, and content literature review. Data analysis applied the Miles and Huberman model integrated with Berger and Luckmann’s symbolic world theory and Habermas’s communicative action theory. The findings reveal that the digital public sphere has become a symbolic arena for visually impaired persons to construct social identity, seek recognition, and represent life experiences through symbols of struggle, hope, spirituality, and social dedication. Communicative actions presented in the video narratives were inspirational, religious, educational, and motivational, fostering empathy and inclusive awareness within society. This study confirms that digital communication functions not only as a medium of information exchange but also as a space for social meaning production and symbolic struggle for visually impaired communities in achieving equality within the digital public sphere.

Abstract

This study analyzes the role of foreign YouTuber content created by @Two Mad Explorers in constructing tourism promotion discourse for Gunungkidul through a descriptive qualitative approach. The study focuses on the video entitled “Sisi Lain Yogyakarta ?? Gunungkidul”, which presents the authentic experiences of foreign travelers exploring various destinations in Gunungkidul. This research examines both visual and verbal elements in the video, as well as audience responses in the comment section, to understand how User-Generated Content (UGC) contributes to destination image formation. The findings indicate that the video constructs a positive destination representation through visual narratives, personal testimonials, and emotional storytelling. The content highlights local identity, transparent and inclusive destination management, clear location signage, and unique geographical features that enrich the tourism experience. Audience responses in the comment section also demonstrate forms of electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM), indicating the potential to influence audience perceptions and travel interest toward the destination. This study confirms that social media, particularly YouTube, has significant potential as an experience-based tourism promotion medium that can organically strengthen destination branding. Therefore, collaboration between tourism stakeholders and digital creators should be optimized to enhance the competitiveness of local tourism destinations.

Abstract

Adolescents living in orphanages are vulnerable to low self-esteem due to experiences of loss, family separation, and psychosocial challenges. This study aims to examine how supportive caregiver communication contributes to the development of adolescent self-esteem at the Muhammadiyah Children Centre (MCC) KH. Mas Mansyur. Guided by Social Support Theory, this research employed a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design by combining quantitative and qualitative approaches. Quantitative data were collected using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) administered to 19 adolescents, while qualitative data were obtained through semi-structured interviews with 4 caregivers. The findings indicate that adolescents generally demonstrated relatively healthy levels of self-esteem, although differences appeared between male and female participants. The study identified 4 caregiver communication practices: proactive and empathetic interaction, the development of a family-like community, fair and consistent discipline, and positive narrative reframing. These practices reflect emotional, instrumental, informational, and appraisal support that strengthen adolescents’ self-liking and self-competence. The study concludes that supportive caregiver communication plays an important role in fostering adolescents’ psychological well-being and self-esteem within residential care.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the dialectics of gender relations and cultural violence manifested within family communication regarding stunting mitigation in Sillu Village, Kupang Regency. Utilizing a qualitative case study approach, data were gathered through in-depth interviews with community leaders, medical professionals, and married couples with stunted children. The findings reveal that stunting mitigation is significantly hindered by a dominant patriarchal hegemony that restricts women’s bargaining power in health-related decision-making. Domestic communication dialectics are characterized by a conflict between modern health education and culturally violent constructs, such as dietary taboos for pregnant women and customary postpartum restrictions that obstruct infant access to healthcare facilities. This phenomenon further exacerbates the prevalence of stunting. Moreover, nutrition literacy is predominantly targeted at mothers, whereas financial control remains vested in fathers, who tend to be passive in domestic affairs. Consequently, this study recommends the implementation of gender-responsive health communication strategies within the family. This involves actively engaging fathers as health communicators and initiating community-based advocacy with traditional leaders to deconstruct cultural myths and customary norms that impede optimal maternal and child nutrition.

Abstract

The presence of Mafindo volunteers is important to reduce the level of cyber crime in Indonesia. Polri data shows that in 2022, the cyber crime increased 14 times compared to 2021.Mafindo volunteers come from different cultural backgrounds, which may experience obstacles in building harmonious relationships within the organization. These differences can cause stereotypical misunderstandings and conflicts between individuals, which ultimately reduce the enthusiasm of volunteers in guarding cybercrime. The research results show that to avoid conflict and maintain the enthusiasm of volunteers, Mafindo management approaches human relations with three approaches, namely, 1). OPSDM as a center for human relations activities, with activities in the form of: Caring to volunteers' emotions, a place to convey complaints, giving appreciation, and increasing volunteer capacity, 2). Implementation of an egalitarian system in organizations, 3). Collegial-collective decision-making culture. These three findings show that relationships between people are a central factor in the progress of harmonization in an agency/organization.

Abstract

Male K-pop fans (fanboys), amid the dominance of female fans within K-pop fandom, frequently encounter negative stigmatization because their participation is often perceived as inconsistent with societal norms of masculinity. Such conditions influence how fanboys construct and negotiate their identities. This study investigates the identity construction of K-pop fanboys through the lens of the Communication Theory of Identity (CTI). Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with nine informants selected through purposive sampling and non-participant observation of fandom-related activities and social media engagement. The findings show that fanboy identity is constructed through the interaction of the personal, enactment, relational, and communal layers of identity. At the personal layer, informants identified themselves as either casual or devoted fans. These identities were expressed through fandom activities, ownership of K-pop merchandise, and social media engagement. At the relational layer, older sisters and female friends played important roles in introducing and reinforcing involvement in K-pop culture. At the communal layer, fanboys were frequently labeled as banci and/or insufficiently masculine, leading them to either conceal or openly express their fandom identity. This study concludes that K-pop fanboy identity is dynamic and continuously negotiated within societal expectations of masculinity.

Abstract

The problem of the depiction of widows in the media cannot be separated from the discourse on gender inequality. The status of widows in the media tends to be presented homogeneously, namely that women are subordinated. This article explores the discourse construction and representation of widows in Indonesian web series. This research aims to describe the representation of widows broadcast in digital-based media with a focus on the web series Terlanjur Sayang. This research uses a narrative approach with Roland Barthes' semiological method which is supported by narrative analysis by Nick Lacey and Vladimir Propp as an analytical tool. Representation Theory is placed as an academic foundation. The results of the research show that widows are represented as people who are not financially independent, seducers of men, manipulative or deceitful, and people who are treacherous. The placement of widows in the narrative structure is positioned as a party that disturbs the balance and is the cause of social loss. This research also shows that widows are represented through women who colonize men with their symbolic capital. The web series Terlanjur Sayang gives rise to the myth of widows as people who pretend to be naïve.
