Abstract

This study discusses the importance of English language learning based on needs analysis with the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) approach in non-English study programs. The questionnaire results showed that 86% of students realized the importance of English for their studies and careers, while 72% liked learning English but wanted materials that were more relevant to their fields of study. As many as 58% of students considered speaking skills the most important but difficult to master, and 67% needed more practice in writing for academic needs. The majority of students (75%) liked interactive learning methods such as group discussions and simulations, and 80% agreed that learning technology was very helpful. The needs analysis showed that students of Islamic Religious Education, Early Childhood Islamic Education, Islamic Banking, and Islamic Da'wah and Communication needed materials that were relevant to their respective academic and professional contexts, such as delivering sermons, telling stories to children, presenting Islamic financial products, and participating in interfaith discussions. In addition, students expect lecturers with pedagogical, personality, professionalism, and social competencies who can create relevant and motivating learning. With a student-centered approach, English learning becomes more engaging and supports the development of applicable skills for the future.

Abstract

The transition from extractive to sustainable economies represents a complex challenge for post-mining regions in Indonesia. This study explores the emergence and development of locally initiated tourism villages in Membalong and Tanjung Rusa Villages, Belitung, as a model of socio-ecological transformation from tin-extractive landscapes toward creative tourism economies. Employing a qualitative-descriptive approach through in-depth interviews, field observations, participatory mapping, and a literature review and a literature review, this study analyzes the processes of social mobilization, tourism narrative construction, and landscape regeneration undertaken by local communities to transform mining voids (kolong or camui) and environmental degradation into valuable tourism assets. Findings reveal that the success of this model is underpinned by five fundamental pillars: (1) revitalization of post-mining landscapes into tourism lakes and ecological education parks, (2) diversification of environmentally-friendly local products based on pandan thorn handicrafts and natural culinary resources, (3) strengthening of daily cultural practices of gardening and fishing as unique coastal tourism attractions, (4) preservation of hospitable coastal Malay culture as social capital for welcoming tourists, and (5) capacity development in homestay management and tour guiding based on SAPTA PESONA principles (represents Indonesia's seven tourism hospitality standards: safety, order, cleanliness, beauty, friendliness, memorable experiences, and comfort) integrated with enhanced English communication competencies to serve international tourist mobility. However, the sustainability of this model faces critical challenges, including dependency on external support and financing, gaps in community managerial capacity, linguistic competency deficits in communicating with foreign tourists, limitations in effective marketing communication (marcom) strategies to reach broader tourist markets, and risks of pseudo-empowerment in the governance of village-owned enterprises (BUMDes) and tourism awareness groups (Pokdarwis). Theoretically, this study concretizes the concept of community-based tourism (CBT) that not only rehabilitates degraded environments but also cultivates socio-economic and communicative capacities of grassroots communities. The implications position these two villages as case experiences and valuable practical models for other post-mining regions in Indonesia in developing inclusive, competitive, and sustainable destinations.

Abstract

This study aims to determine viewers' emotional responses to the Russia-Ukraine conflict as expressed in YouTube comments on news reports by Fox News and Hindustan Times. Using Martin & White's (2005) Appraisal Theory, specifically the affect subsystem, the study analyzed how viewers expressed emotions such as happiness, unhappiness, security, insecurity, satisfaction, dissatisfaction, inclination, and disinclination. The findings revealed the predominance of negative sentiments, especially unhappiness, reflecting outrage and moral condemnation of Russia's military actions, including the attack on the children's hospital. Support for Ukraine was evident through expressions of solidarity and calls for international intervention. Meanwhile, pro-Russian narratives are often dismissed as propaganda. This research examines how internet debates have become more heated and divided due to global political conflicts. Wars are fought not only on the ground, but also in the hearts and minds of internet users.

Abstract

The Strait of Malacca, one of the world’s busiest maritime routes, faces persistent threats from Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing, which undermines marine resource sustainability, economic security, and regional stability. This study analyzes the role of the ASEAN Maritime Forum (AMF) in addressing IUU fishing through the lens of international cooperation and maritime security theories. Employing a qualitative descriptive-analytical approach and case study method, the research draws on secondary data from ASEAN documents, national regulations, international reports, and scholarly sources. Findings show that the AMF functions as a regional dialogue and coordination platform, facilitating intelligence sharing, joint patrols, capacity building, and policy harmonization among ASEAN member states. Notable mechanisms include the ASEAN Monitoring, Control, and Surveillance (MCS) network, Malacca Straits Patrols, and the ASEAN Regional Plan of Action to Combat IUU Fishing. While these initiatives have contributed to improved maritime domain awareness and reduced incidents by up to 20% in recent years, the AMF’s operational impact remains constrained by disparities in technical capacity, sovereignty sensitivities, limited enforcement authority, and funding shortages. The study concludes that strengthening AMF effectiveness requires harmonizing fisheries laws, enhancing technological integration, ensuring sustainable financing, and fostering cross-sector collaboration with external partners. Ultimately, the AMF holds strategic potential as a pillar of collective maritime governance in Southeast Asia, yet its success hinges on transforming political consensus into binding, coordinated, and enforceable actions.

Abstract

The design of disaster preparedness in secondary schools emphasizes coordination, information management, the use of early warning systems, and education and training. Preparing schools for disasters is crucial to minimizing risks and safeguarding the the health and welfare of students, teachers, and other members of the school community. This study employs a literature review approach, analyzing existing theories and practices related to disaster preparedness, including inter-agency coordination, disaster information management, and the application of early warning systems suitable for secondary schools. Using a qualitative literature review method, this research examines academic publications, policy reports, and other relevant documents to identify critical aspects of disaster preparedness design for schools. The study involves collecting secondary data from books, scholarly articles, and official records concerning coordination, information management, early warning systems, and training programs. These data are qualitatively analyzed to uncover patterns, strategies, and recommendations for enhancing school disaster preparedness. Findings highlight that effective coordination among schools, government bodies, and related institutions is essential for developing a robust preparedness system. Efficient and timely information management ensures that school communities are well-informed about emergency procedures. Integrated early warning systems, utilizing communication tools and routine drills, significantly enhance awareness and readiness among school members. Additionally, ongoing education and structured training for students, teachers, and staff improve disaster response skills and understanding, ultimately reducing potential losses.

Abstract

This study focuses significantly on the phenomenon of discrimination committed by humans against arcanists in the dialogue of the video game Reverse 1999. This study attempts to analyze the discrimination committed by humans against arcanists in the dialogue, explain the phenomenon of discrimination using Van Dijk's 3-dimensional theory, and identify patterns of discriminatory conversation in the dialogue of the video game. Van Dijk’s three dimensions are separated into text, social cognition, and social context. Text structure, social cognition, and social context are important parts of Van Dijk's framework. These three dimensions then analyzed using three primary structures, namely microstructure, macrostructure, and superstructure. From the text, the author identifies that the issue of discrimination appears in the elements of semantics, and rhetoric through words with discriminatory intent. In terms of social cognition, the developers place the main focus on the arcanists by portraying them as a marginalized minority group. In the social context the author concludes that social realities regarding discrimination still frequently occur in society. In fact, this problem may worsen because of domination by the dominant group.
