Abstract

This study aims to reveal the kinds of discrimination due to the patriarchal culture experienced by the protagonist in the novel Girl of the Southern Sea by Michelle Kadarusman. To expose the kinds of discrimination due to the patriarchal culture experienced by the protagonist, this study uses a qualitative method that refers to a descriptive approach to collect primary and secondary data as material for problem-solving and is what it is. This study uses feminist literary criticism theory as a data analysis tool. This research is essential to study because the patriarchal culture inherent in society is the cause of women experiencing discrimination. Men and women play patriarchal culture, so it is oftentimes for women to experience discrimination from men and fellow women. The results showed that Nia, the protagonist in the novel Girl of the Southern Sea, experienced several situations where she was marginalized, subordinated, and stereotyped by men and other women. If literature (novel) is considered a reflection of society, the novel Girl of the Southern Sea critically represents the idea.

Abstract

The issue of abuse of authority by company directors often occurs in companies in Indonesia. Deviations that exceed the authority of the board of directors are known as Ultra Virus. As a result of these deviations, it has the potential to cause losses to stakeholders such as shareholders, the wider community, company partners and even the company itself. In the Limited Liability Company Law, ultra virus acts can be held accountable to the Board of Directors personally, but the problem is, how the directors can fulfill the demands of the injured parties while their assets have been transferred or have been exhausted. In this writing the author uses a normative juridical approach. The result of this study is that the actions of directors who have ultra viruses have the potential to harm many parties, therefore so that these actions are not repeated there needs to be a strict supervision mechanism, because so far the supervision has only been carried out by commissioners. Internal supervision by commissioners is deemed not optimal, so it is necessary to establish by the government an institution in charge of overseeing the performance of directors in the company

Abstract

Teachers have a vital role in facilitating students' learning journeys. Therefore, they must carefully select and employ effective techniques during their instructional sessions. Among these techniques, questioning stands out as a particularly influential method. This study focuses on exploring the utilization of questioning strategies by English teachers in the context of EFL (English as a Foreign Language) classroom interactions within Vocational High Schools. The research adopts a case study approach, centering around one EFL teacher as the participant. Data collection involved interviews and observations, while Miles and Huberman's qualitative data analysis framework was applied for data interpretation. The findings of this study indicate that, among the four question types outlined in Wangru's (2016), the teacher predominantly employs two strategies during classroom interactions: prompting and repeating. In contrast, probing and redirecting strategies are used less frequently. The questions posed by the teacher cover a range of topics, including material-related inquiries and those aimed at eliciting student responses. Consequently, students engage actively in the learning process, leading to skill enhancement. In conclusion, this research demonstrates that effective employment of questioning strategies contributes to an interactive learning environment.

Abstract

English today is everywhere in our landscape. It appears in every commercial item. People seem to have a strong belief that language has an extra magical power to sell; it contains a powerful mantra to persuade consumers to choose their products. With its extensive use, English marks a kind of global community. This study makes an online survey through Street View in Google Maps to collect data on the use of English in the landscapes, particularly in the area of Simpang Lima, Semarang. This employs a perspective of language ecology questioning the ideology behind the rampant English, dominating our place. Based on the data collected, it proves that English appears the most. English is found on the billboards of automotive, mobile phones, cosmetic products, cigarettes, electronics, online shops, internet-based transportation services, housing complexes/real estate, and cellular providers. English items are equal to Indonesian. In Indonesian ads, English many times is featured to be a tagline. Meanwhile, English ads give no space for Indonesian items. Here, English surely does not symbolize the language of the community. We do believe that Semarang is dominantly occupied by Indonesian people. However, it is proved that English has shown its domination in the space, with no real users in the field. It is there for its commercials effects and association, based on the shared assumption of its prestige, modernity, beauty and power.

Through the issue of the body by using the discourse analysis approach and Michel Foucault's theories of power, this study analyzes how the concept of the female body as a form of discipline is represented in the film. This concept is often presented by the media which eventually becomes the true standard of how the woman’s body should be. Hence, it can be said that the media plays a role in shaping the discourse how the concept of beauty of the acceptable female body. Media, in this case, is the main stakeholder in winning the discourse

Abstract

This study tries to illuminate the significance of female empowerment in Blackpink's song The Happiest Girl. The Born Pink Album by The Happiest Girl in Blackpink was used as the source of the analysis's data. This study's goals are to: (1) define the textual elements of song lyrics; (2) identify discursive devices in song lyrics; and (3) identify social elements in song lyrics. In order to address the issues in this research, this qualitative study applies Norman Fairclough's (2001) theory to a three-dimensional model that is also supported by other theories. The research's findings are reflected in the text's framework, which depicts women who possess the capacity to empower themselves via independence and self-assurance in their decision-making. The producer's experience and social issues play a major role in the creation of songs in the discourse practice dimension of the creative process. Fans can accept the song well during the listening process because of how it is structured as something that is both enjoyable and relevant to life. Sociocultural behaviors that perpetuate gender stereotypes allow the music business to be more fearless in creating songs that elevate the importance of women's empowerment.
