Abstract

Healthcare reform is largely a political process which requires a careful analysis for better understanding. The process is often characterized by politics of domination and influence by various actors on the policy scene. This study examines the power relations that shaped the design and implementation of a Community-Based Health Insurance programme in Nigeria. Health policy triangle developed by Walt and Gilson serves as the analytical tool. Using a qualitative method of data collection, this study sheds light on the recent trends in health policy transfer to Africa from the global North and reveals the underlying politics in the design and implementation of a CBHI programme in rural Kwara. Specifically, we highlight the process through which the policy was proposed and accepted. Also, our study shows the political underpinnings of the design and implementation of the policy. Finally, we argue for a need to repurpose the role of the state (i.e. government) towards achieving meaningful development and to gainfully improve social services provisioning, especially in the healthcare sector. Given the importance of healthcare to the well-being of the people, productivity and national development, this study contributes to understanding the issues ‘behind the scenes’ in relation to policy design and implementation.

Abstract

The aim of the study is to analyze Batu Karang Seribu using theory from Vladimir Propp. Batu Karang Seribu is one of the tourist destinations particularly in Kundi village West Bangka Regency hence it is important to study the folktales surrounding it to enhance the site’s popularity. This study applies descriptive qualitative research method using a content analysis approach. This study employs certain characteristics of Propp’s narrative model and applied them in the folklore which aim at finding the morphological reading of the narrative functions. The data were gathered and identified according to the forms of narrative functions. All the categorized contents were analyzed based on the narrative functions and symbols. Based on the analysis, there are 11 functions found in the story. There were the function of Absentation (β1), Delivery (ζ), Reconnaissance (ε), Trickery (η3), Complicity (θ1), Villainy (A14), Meditation (B4), provision of a magical agent (F6), Guidance (G4), struggle (H), and Transfiguration (T). In short, the function is as follows: β1ζεη3θ1A14B4F6G4HT. The function of Struggle (H) and Transfiguration (T) is unusual since the villain is not the one who have combat with the hero but a new character, Pahit Lidah. He defeats the hero by transforming him into a stone.

Abstract

This study explores the effectiveness of educational videos in facilitating English vocabulary acquisition in a young learner. The research employs a qualitative case study approach, focusing on a 4-year-old girl exposed to educational videos. Data was collected through observations, recordings, and interviews, emphasizing the acquisition of basic vocabulary such as colors, animals, and numbers. The findings reveal that educational videos significantly aid vocabulary learning by providing engaging visual and auditory stimuli. However, the study underscores the importance of human interaction in language acquisition, suggesting that while educational videos are a valuable tool, they should complement traditional learning methods rather than replace them. This research offers insights for educators and parents on integrating multimedia resources into early language learning strategies.

Abstract

Movies have become one of the most effective learning media in learning English, especially in Indonesia. Watching animated films can enhance students' language knowledge, speaking proficiency, and listening comprehension. This study aims at the effectiveness of developing students’ vocabulary acquisition through watching animation movie The Monkey and The Crocodile. This research uses qualitative methods with a narrative research design. This research will explore how students develop knowledge acquisition through animated films. Therefore, researchers use narrative research methods. The source of this research is all grade seventh students at SMP 1 Siwalan in 2024/2025 academic year. The students consist of 15 male and 16 female. The data analysis was obtained by a Thematic Analysis. Braun and Clarke (2006) outlined a set of theme-building procedures for the social sciences, but thematic analysis remains a loosely defined practice with many varied applications across fields of study and a “range of theoretical and epistemological approaches,” such as case study and ethnography. Interview, observation, and documentation were used in collecting the data. The finding shows that a clear improvement in students' vocabulary skills, with the average score increasing to 85.43, which is considered very good. This increase in score indicates that the use of animated films not only helps students master new vocabulary more easily, but also increases their confidence in using the vocabulary in communication. In addition, students also appear more enthusiastic and active in asking questions, discussing, and using the vocabulary they learned during the lesson

Abstract

This paper examines the nature, pattern, and spatiotemporal variation of inter-state passenger movement from Katsina to other states across the country. Two major terminals were purposefully selected for the study, which are the Nigerian Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and Katsina State Transport Authority (KTSTA). Questionnaires were systemically administered to departing passengers. Information on passenger flow was collected from the passenger register at the motor parks. A flow line map was used to show the direction of the flow, while a bar graph was used to show the volume or magnitude and temporal variation of passenger movement from Katsina to other states across the country. The findings reveal that the majority of the passengers were males who were married, and most of them were traders and civil servants; thus, work- or business-related trips account for most of the reasons for travelling. The findings reveal that the NURTW terminal has a wider spatial coverage of 11 states, while the KTSTA terminal has a spatial coverage of 9 states. Kano State is the most popular destination, followed by Kaduna and Abuja. Generally, the findings show a seasonal pattern of passenger flow with higher numbers in the later months of the year (October to December) and lower numbers in the middle of the year (June and July). Recommendations include the enhancement of transport infrastructures to cater to work- or business-related trips, seasonal adjustment, passenger demographic consideration, and promotion of off-peak travel. This is to ensure a more efficient and responsive transport system that meets the needs of travellers and maximises customer satisfaction.

Abstract

This article aims to explain the external persuasive actions of the Aceh Provincial Government in maintaining its Islamic identity through “The Light of Aceh” branding towards the global community. This action is referred to as paradiplomacy. As one of the subnational actors in Indonesia, Aceh Province is an area that has social and political dynamics from before independence to the present. Aceh has a distinctive identity and culture known as Serambi Mekah. Because of its efforts to maintain this identity, Aceh once fought for independence from Indonesia. Aceh's paradiplomacy certainly has different dynamics. However, the effort to maintain its identity has been a struggle from the past to the present. In the independence era, Aceh tried to fight for its identity with the struggle for independence, but in the post-independence era, Aceh fought for its regional interests through the framework of Regional Autonomy by establishing foreign relations and diplomacy to the global community. This research uses the theories of paradiplomacy and social identity to explain the persuasive actions taken by the Aceh Provincial Government through paradiplomacy to maintain its social identity. This research uses a qualitative method with data collection from interviews with relevant informants, documentation studies and internet-based studies. The results of this research show that the Aceh Provincial Government's paradiplomacy efforts to maintain its Islamic identity are carried out through branding “The Light of Aceh” by incorporating Islamic values in various components of the branding such as the main values of branding, logo philosophy, and branding commercial advertising videos. These values are socialised to the global community through various international activities by showcasing culture in dances, poems of clothing at international festivals, so that Aceh is better known by the global community with its Islamic identity.

Abstract

This research focuses on the form of ecranisation the storyline adaptation from the novel to the film Maze Runner: The Death Cure. The purpose of this research is to describe the forms of ecranisation (addition, alteration, and compression) through a comparison of the narrative facts from the novel to the film. This study employs a literature study approach with a qualitative descriptive method. The data consists of words, phrases, and sentences found in the novel and the film script. The data collection techniques in this study include reading, noting, observing, transcribing the film into a script, translating the film script, and classifying the data. The analysis techniques used are data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. This research will utilize comparative literature theory, narrative facts (plot, characters, and setting), and ecranisation (addition, alteration, and compression). The results of this research show that the comparison between the novel Maze Runner: The Death Cure and the film has narrative similarities and employs a mixed plot structure. The differences observed are evident in the introduction of new plots and settings in the film. This occurs due to the condensation of the story in the film; not all information from the novel can be fully incorporated into the film. The form of ecranisation (changes) that occurs in adapting the novel Maze Runner: The Death Cure into the film tends to include more additions, such as the introduction of new settings and plots. This happens because the past setting is not prominently featured, and there are elements of adult themes within it, indicating that every process of ecranisation inevitably experiences changes.
