Abstract

Education has a crucial role in fostering the quality of human resources and promoting community development within Batak society. The significance of a gendered approach to education in Batak society stems from cultural and traditional viewpoints that delineate distinct roles for men and women in the realms of education and employment. Nevertheless, there has been a notable shift in cultural perspectives towards gender roles in the realm of education, as seen by the growing presence of women in both educational pursuits and professional occupations. Alongside the gendered approach, the biblical worldview exerts a notable influence on education within Batak society. The biblical perspective offers a robust ethical framework for education and instills a comprehension of its inherent objectives. Hence, it is imperative for education in Batak society to incorporate the biblical worldview as a foundational framework for imparting crucial moral principles. This work utilizes a qualitative research methodology, employing case studies and historical comparisons. Julia Sarumpaet is a prominent individual who has been actively involved in advocating for the advancement of women's rights. The correspondence she has written exhibits a notable similarity to the letters authored by prominent figures in Indonesian history. In the cultural context of Batak Toba, individuals of both genders are accorded a position of high esteem. The identical sentiment is also expressed within the pages of the Bible. Hence, it is imperative for men and women to engage in collaborative efforts, as this aligns with their inherent nature. In the absence of male offspring within a family unit, there is no inherent need to perceive any sense of lacking.

Abstract

The presence of Indonesian female employees overseas yields both advantageous and unfavorable consequences. The potential beneficial effect has the potential to enhance the nation's foreign exchange reserves. Nevertheless, there are adverse consequences that manifest in the shape of diverse challenges, encompassing numerous instances of migrating laborers. The individuals in question have encountered instances of violence, as well as instances where their earnings were not remunerated, among other related matters. The aforementioned issues also manifest in the offspring they leave in their wake. The function of the mother is crucial for the development of children. Consequently, individuals would encounter a substantial detriment that would subsequently impact the trajectory of their attitudes and behaviors throughout their lifetimes. The objective of this study is to examine the role of family communication patterns in mitigating the grief stages experienced by children whose moms engage in migrant employment. The present study employs a qualitative research methodology, namely a case study approach. The focus of this study is on families residing in Cibedug Village, Rongga District, West Bandung Regency, who are responsible for rearing children while the mothers work as migrant workers. The findings of the study indicate that when democratic communication patterns are present within the family, children are able to navigate the stages of grief effectively. In contrast, families that employ authoritarian communication patterns pose challenges for children in effectively navigating the stages of grief, resulting in manifestations of irritability, introversion, mistrust, and limited ability to engage in social interactions with their peers.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the use of translation techniques contained in the letters to the novel Dear John by Nicholas Sparks. The research method used is text analysis with a qualitative approach. Data is collected with observation techniques, library studies, and document analysis. The analysis and interpretation of the research data were carried out and studied by following the six steps of the qualitative data analysis techniques adopted by Creswell (2009) through the comparison analysis between the original text in English and the translation in Indonesian, with a focus on the selection of appropriate matches to express the correspondence, language style, and meaning of the letters. The results of the study showed that the translators used seven translation techniques out of 18 developed by Molina and Albir (2002), namely using literal techniques at 35.3%, Transposition techniques at 17.7%, generalization, amplification, and adaptation techniques at 11.8%, and modulation and borrowing techniques at 5.8%. The most commonly used technique is the literal technique.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the extent to which native-speakerism (NS) is embedded in the comments responding to a YouTube video entitled “Salah Kursus Bahasa Inggris?- Seleb English” by a YouTuber named Sacha Stevenson. The researchers believe that native-speakerism, an ideology that creates a power imbalance favoring native speakers of English over nonnative speakers of English, is present in the video, in which the content creator scrutinizes Indonesian people’s English accents. However, this paper focuses on the comments responding to the video, since they can show to what extent NS is adopted by EFL speakers/learners in Indonesia. The data was retrieved using YouTube Data API and Python programming language, sorted using Microsoft Excel, and categorized by applying three reading steps into four levels which spans from 0 (no indication of native speakerism) to 3 (strong indication of native speakerism). The findings are presented descriptively and analyzed within the theoretical framework on NS. The results suggest that NS is present in the observed comments on all four levels, which suggests how deeply embedded the NS ideology within the community of Indonesian English language learners and speakers. Suggestions on how to counter this ideology are presented in conclusion.

Abstract

The Jambi Corruption Crime Court (Tipikor) in handing down crimes is more dominant in applying Article 3 compared to Article 2 against perpetrators who cause harm to state finances and handing down decisions in the light category, namely an average of 1 year and 11 months. Regarding this issue, the aim of the research is to carry out an analysis of the judge's decision in relation to the implementation of Perma No. 1 of 2020 concerning Sentencing Guidelines for Article 2 and Article 3 of the Corruption Law. By conducting a study of the Jambi Corruption Court's decision, the judge's decision will be evaluated in the light, medium and heavy categories, so that a clear picture of the judge's rationale in implementing PERMA No.1 of 2020 is obtained. The type of research is normative juridical, namely examining materials law, both primary, secondary and tertiary legal materials. The approach is to use a statutory approach and a case approach by analyzing cases related to the legal issues discussed. From the results of the research on the Jambi District Court's decision 1) The decision handed down by the Judge regarding the implementation of PERMA Number 1 of 2020 has not been used as a guideline in handing down the decision. This can be assessed from the verdict handed down by the judge. The length of the prison sentence imposed is not in accordance with the categories as formulated, namely the categories of state losses are the most severe, heavy, medium, light and lightest, where in each category there is a classification, namely the range of prison sentences imposed is adjusted to that category. 2) The aim of punishment in corruption cases is to recover state losses, but in the imposition of a substitute sentence imposed by the judge the aim of the sentence has not been realized, because in PERMA there is no regulation regarding guidelines for imposing additional punishment as replacement money.

Abstract

This study employs visual discourse analysis to reveal the visual elements within the children's book "I AM KARTINI." Its primary objective is to assess how the book conveys the interplay between gender and the pursuit of gender equality, particularly concerning education. The analysis reveals a both the promotion of Gender Equality and the presence of Gender Inequality. "I AM KARTINI" strongly advocates for Gender Equality, emphasizing the critical importance of granting women equal access to education. The book communicates the idea that numerous women recognize education's pivotal role in their lives and society as a whole, championing women's inherent right to the same opportunities enjoyed by men. However, the analysis also uncovers instances of Gender Inequality depicted in the book, connecting patriarchal culture within the Indonesian educational system. The book portrays stereotypes that restrict women to domestic roles, primarily centered on family and household responsibilities. This research highlights the critical importance of examining how gender is represented in children's literature. "I AM KARTINI" serves as a powerful instrument in this endeavor, advocating for gender equality while also highlighting the ongoing challenges related to gender bias and inequality within the Indonesian educational landscape. These findings emphasise the urgent need to recognize and address these issues to foster an inclusive educational environment where every individual has an equal opportunity to thrive.

Abstract

This article discusses the relationship between Pancasila and the UUD 1945 as a constitution and laws, implementing regulations and policies to see its ontological gaps. The discussion focused on the constitutional phenomenon, which must elaborate on constructing the 1945 Basic Act and Pancasila. This article aims to see the dimensions of legal ontology related to the understanding and practice of justice in the country and state. The method used is to apply a content analysis approach, which identifies patterns, themes, or meanings that arise from the concept material contained in Pancasila and the 1945 Basic Act. From this research, ontological problems that need more profound attention are found. Given the overly broad ontological nature, further research is needed to identify more profound problems. This research has significant significance because it can be a marker of problems at the philosophical level that need attention.

Abstract

Thailand's foreign policy stance has shifted dramatically since the Prayuth regime staged a coup in 2014. The purpose of this study: 1) Complement and expand on the theoretical meaning of hedging strategy. 2) It can theoretically support Thailand in the face of strategic conflict between China and the United States. 3) Be aware of why Thailand implements a hedging strategy and know the specific performance of Thailand’s hedging strategy. 4) It will aid in the growth of Thailand's connections with the two big countries. 5) This article can provide certain reference for research related to Thailand’s diplomatic strategy. The method of this study adopts content documentary analysis, case analysis method, literature research and historical method. According to the findings of this study, Thailand has begun to tilt more toward requesting assistance from China in Prayuth goverment. Many researchers are concerned about Thailand's neutrality. However, Thailand has not yet vanished from the United States. Just a few steps removed from the Obama and Trump administrations. Thailand has begun to rebuild its old friendship with America as the Joe Biden era looms. But anyway Thailand cannot choose a side. Because Thailand is a reliable ally on both sides. This has caused the Prayut government to seek cooperation from other organizations and countries, including Japan, India, and ASEAN. Thailand has accelerated the development of economic links with Japan. Accelerate the political development of relations with India. and establishing ties with ASEAN and Southeastern countries in order to find a way for small countries to maintain their own interests as much as possible in the fight between the two superpowers. Although hedging techniques are currently the preferred option for smaller countries, the variables driving this strategy differ. In Thailand, the majority of the factors that influence hedging tactics originate within the country. But all bordering countries are influenced by foreign causes. As a result, Thailand has become another special case of hedging among ASEAN countries.

Abstract

This research discusses the political representation of women in the Central Bangka Regency legislature. The substantial presence of women in the legislature is very important, not just to complete the seats but as an effort to provide access and authority to women to be able to carry their interests. Political representation does not discuss how many representatives are present in a parliament, but looks at how the process of represented interests can be carried by those who represent them. The presence of women as a council is expected to bring the interests of women, through their role in shaping policies in the fulfillment of fair rights for women. The purpose of this research is to find out the political representation of women and also the obstacles faced by women council members in the legislative body of the Regional People's Representative Council of Bangka Tengah Regency for the 2019-2024 period. The theory used in this research is Hanna Fenichel Pitkin's theory of Representation. The research method in this study is using Qualitative research methods with data collection techniques of observation, interviews, and documentation as supporting data. The results of this study are the political representation of women in the Bangka Tengah Regional House of Representatives based on formal representation, there are 4 female councilors, then descriptive representation is characterized by similarities in gender characteristics and interests, and symbolic representation is seen from the similarity between the identities that represent. Meanwhile, in substantive representation based on the legislative function, the BangkaTengah Regional House of Representatives can be said to be good. This is because there are 4 local regulations agreed upon relating to women and children. The budget function of the council's substantive representation runs very well, this is shown by the increase in the budget every year at DP2KBP3A. The supervisory function based on substantive representation can be said to be good, this is because Central Bangka Regency managed to get the Parahita Ekapraya Award. In addition, there are no significant obstacles faced by women councils in the Central Bangka Regional House of Representatives. This is because they have been on the council for a long time and have the experience to deal with all situations.
