Abstract

Heaven is a Japanese novel authored by Mieko Kawakami in 2009, translated by Bett and Boyd in 2020. Kawakami identifies bullying in schools, particularly through the character Iijima, as the central theme of this story. Moreover, the phenomenon of bullying stems from the fundamental issue of social class inequality. This research aims to: 1) identify social class through the frameworks of Marx and Levy, Jr.; 2) elucidate Kawakami's perspective and the concept of transindividuality; and 3) assess the significance of social class inequality in translation practices. This research method employs a descriptive qualitative approach, which focuses on social analysis. However, it persuades social classes to comprehend analysis and utilize sociology literature and literary translation from the perspective of an English learner. This research identifies the highest class as Ninomiya, who is a facilitator of bullying, while the lowest class is represented by Eyes and Kojima, who suffer from bullying. Kawakami created those characters as a manifestation of her social and humanity philosophy, taking into account her own past experiences. Therefore, Bett and Boyd, as the translators of Heaven, uphold the values of social class inequality

Abstract

The study looked at the housing situation of migrants from the north in the Ilorin Metropolis of Kwara State. Examining the housing characteristics of northern immigrants in the Ilorin Metropolis, such as toilet, bathroom, kitchen, electricity, drainage, sources of water, as well as methods of waste disposal and determining the factors influencing their preference for housing were the specific objectives. Questionnaire and interview served as survey instruments employed to gather information from 360 randomly chosen immigrants from the north. Descriptive statistics and factor analysis were used to analyse the data. Findings revealed that a significant portion of the respondents (60.8%) moved to Ilorin Metropolis in quest of employment. Trading (30.6%), alms seeking (29.4%), and commercial motorcycle riding (17.5%) were the major economic activities common among the northern immigrants in Ilorin Metropolis. The results also revealed that a large number of the immigrants resided in rented (83.6%) single-family homes (41.7%), which were notable for having a pit toilet (70.8%), open space kitchen (67.8%), open drainage (46.7%), and covered wells (30.6%) as a source of water. In the research area, the primary determinants of northern migrants' home preferences were their socioeconomic level, the affordability of housing, and their employment security. It is glaring that northern immigrants in Ilorin metropolis lack decent housing facilities, and the government should provide affordable public housing that is supplied with electricity, a potable water supply, and appropriate management of public waste disposal facilities for non-natives.

Abstract

This study examines the role of the Jember Fashion Carnaval (JFC) as a paradiplomatic tool for the Jember district government in its efforts to establish itself as a world fashion city. Using a qualitative approach, the research analyzes how JFC functions as a cultural, economic, and political instrument in international relations, drawing on theoretical frameworks from Aldecoa & Keating, Lecours, Dávila & Silva, and Prieto. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with key stakeholders (organizers, government officials, and international participants), media analysis, and documentation studies, with thematic analysis applied to identify patterns in JFC’s diplomatic impact. The findings reveal that JFC has successfully enhanced Jember’s global visibility, facilitated cross-cultural exchanges, and contributed to local economic growth through tourism and foreign investment interest. However, challenges such as inadequate legal frameworks, limited funding, and a lack of specialized human resources hinder the institutionalization of paradiplomacy in Jember. Despite these constraints, JFC demonstrates the potential of subnational cultural diplomacy in projecting local identity and supporting national soft power. The study concludes with policy recommendations, including strengthening institutional support, diversifying funding mechanisms, and integrating JFC into long-term regional development strategies. By addressing these gaps, Jember can maximize JFC’s role in achieving its aspirations as a world fashion city while contributing to broader discussions on paradiplomacy and cultural diplomacy in international relations

Abstract

Personal data is a key commodity, which has led digital platforms such as Google, Facebook and TikTok to create business models that rely on the collection, analysis and use of user data to target personalized advertising. Drawing on Vincent Mosco's political economy of media theory and Dallas Smythe's concept of audience commodity, this study explores the process of commoditization of user data as the core of the digital advertising ecosystem. The study uses a qualitative approach with descriptive analysis of the digital media ecosystem, as well as case studies of digital advertising platforms that integrate predictive algorithms to maximize marketing efficiency. The findings show that personal data is not only an economic resource but also reinforces the power imbalance between digital platforms and users. Moreover, the exploitation of this data creates ethical challenges related to privacy, transparency and users' rights to their information. In conclusion, while data-driven marketing strategies offer high efficiency for advertisers, the practice demands stricter regulation to protect user privacy and prevent irresponsible data exploitation. Recommendations include increasing algorithm transparency, strengthening data regulations, and encouraging public awareness about managing their personal data in the digital age

Abstract

Over the past four years up to 2024, the Human Development Index (HDI) of Pontianak City has shown consistent improvement, indicating the local government's commitment to enhancing public welfare. Despite this progress, child abuse remains a serious concern, with 56 reported cases including psychological abuse and sexual violence in 2024 alone. This study aims to examine how the organizational culture within the Regional Child Protection Commission (KPAD) of Pontianak contributes to child protection efforts. A qualitative research method was employed to explore the dynamics of organizational culture and practices within KPAD. The findings indicate that KPAD maintains a flexible organizational culture to stay responsive to public complaints around the clock. Commissioner recruitment is conducted transparently through official website announcements to ensure the selection of qualified candidates. The organization upholds core values of independence, accountability, professionalism, and partnership. The study concludes that while KPAD has laid a strong foundation, further efforts are needed to strengthen communication with victims' families, expand public education campaigns, implement structured monitoring mechanisms, and regularly evaluate service quality to foster public trust and encourage transparent reporting.

Abstract

Social media has changed the way users interact with content, from passive to active content production and promotion. This paper explores YouTube as a platform that illustrates how digital work is performed through user involvement in consuming, creating, and sharing content. Through the application of desk research as well as Eran Fisher's framework for audience labor, the study unveils the way in which YouTube takes advantage of users as voluntary digital laborers. Findings indicate that YouTube takes advantage of users' behavior to generate economic value, typically without the users' knowledge of having a commodified function. This study contributes to a greater understanding of labor relations in the digital economy.

Abstract

This study examines the correlations between students' reading attitudes, reading motivation, parental involvement, and reading comprehension achievement. Using a quantitative research method, data were collected from 150 randomly selected eleventh-grade students (77 males, 73 females) at SMA N 3 Pangkalpinang during the 2019-2020 academic year. Questionnaires measured reading attitudes, motivation, parental involvement, and education, alongside a reading comprehension test. Results revealed a significant correlation between reading motivation and comprehension (r = 0.424). Extrinsic motivation showed a moderate correlation (r = 0.599, p < 0.001), while intrinsic motivation exhibited a low correlation (r = 0.399, p = 0.016). Findings suggest that extrinsic motivation has a stronger influence on reading comprehension than intrinsic motivation, with parental involvement also playing a role. Therefore, it answered the research that there was a relationship between reading motivation and Engagement of Parents Towards Reading Comprehension. For the details, the correlation of intrinsic motivation and reading comprehension is significant in 0,016 by the coefficient correlation 0,399 that considered as low correlation. In another side, the correlation of extrinsic motivation and reading comprehension is significant in 0,000 by the coefficient correlation 0,599 that considered as moderate correlation. It can be concluded that based on the data that was analyzed, the students reading extrinsic motivation influence the students‟ comprehension more than the intrinsic motivation. In other words, the contribution of reading motivation towards reading comprehension was not strongly significant for the second-year students of SMA N 3 Pangkalpinang

Abstract

Freud's psychoanalysis provides useful insights into how characters deal with internal conflict and emotional distress together. This study explores the animated film Luck (2022) through the perspective of Freud's psychoanalytic theory, with a particular emphasis on the psychological ego defense mechanisms. Freud's structural model of the human mind, which includes the id, ego, and superego, offers a framework for comprehending the character's ongoing misfortune. Sam, the protagonist, struggles with her insecurities and emotional problems, and her misfortune represents internal psychological conflicts. Sam's defense mechanisms, which include projection, displacement, and rationalization, protect her from emotional pain while fueling her desire for luck. The id fuels her desire to protect her friend Hazel from loneliness, whereas the ego helps her cope with failures through displacement and rationalization. The superego eventually leads her to self-acceptance and emotional maturity. The analysis redefines luck in the film as a metaphor for Sam's psychological journey, showing how she progresses from unconscious instinct to moral clarity, ultimately portraying luck as an expression of personal resilience and self-discovery.
