Abstract

Westerners’ representation of east world has been done since occupation time in many Eastern areas. Although territorially eastern nations have been independent but viewed from mindset, western nations are still in control until today. Speaking of eastern nations is inseparable from Islam religion because Islam is one out of the five big religions in eastern hemisphere.  Western nations’ othering against eastern ones is also done against Muslim usually associated with East (Islam). In Indonesia, Islamic-themed works began to be accepted around 2000s. It is inseparable from the change of post-reform political structure. Journalists and writers have freedom to express idea and thought, among others, about Islam dynamic in Indonesia and the world. One of Islamic-themed works interesting to study is a novel entitled Faith and City. This novel tells about a character named Hanum and his husband named Rangga who travel to New York. A problem arises when Hanum work in GN TV that should cover Islamic life in an appropriate way. Islam is often represented as terroristic and frightening religion that supports polygamy. This research wants to find out the forms of Westerners’ othering against Easterners or Orientalists in the context of Islamophobia, particularly against women. Islamophobia is an unfounded fear of Muslim. In addition, this research wants to find out the women’s resistance in Islamophobia discussed by Westerners. This study is a qualitative research interpreting words, dialogues, and written sentences and behavior of characters observable in the text. The material object of research is Novel entitled Faith and The City by Hanum Salsabiela Rais. Meanwhile, the formal object is discriminative treatment by Westerners against subaltern women in Islamophobia discourse. The result of current research reveals that the form of oppression against women is verbal abuse shown in the media. Westerners portray Muslim life by exploiting it an inappropriate way.   Meanwhile, women’s resistance is represented by character Hanum deciding to resign from the television media that exploits Muslim life in the West.

Abstract

This research aimed  at revealing the needs of  the Faculty of Language and Arts ( Henceforth called FLA ) students for extra academic activities as an oral English Proficiency enhancer. It has been a well-known fact that the ultimate goal of teaching a language is  a good  mastery of speaking skill as language is a tool of communication and communication takes place where there is speech ( Chaney and Burk, 1998). In addition to  in class learning, all students at Soegijapranata Catholic University ( SCU ) are required to join extra academic activities both at the faculty and university levels. Activities offered by the university  basically attempt to help students recognize and develop their competence and leadership skills whereas those developed by the faculty  provide students with the opportunities to develop their interests and talents. The activities offered by the faculty are carried out mostly in English. Such extra academic activities give  great opportunities to develop the students’ oral skills. Bearing this in mind, the present researcher is interested in finding out whether or not FLA students’ extra academic activities that they have been joining so far play a significant role in developing their speaking competence and what additional activities may be expected to help enhance their oral skills. To find out the answers to such questions, the present researcher conducted a study which made use of questionnaires and interviews as research instruments. The   respondents of this study were FLA active students from batch 2019 to 2022. There were 84 students from three different majors, i.e. English Linguistics & Literature, Englishpreneurship ( Engpre ) and Digital Performing Arts ( DPA). The results indicate that students on average consider extra academic activities especially those offered by the Faculty of Language and Arts contribute a lot to the development  of their oral proficiency. Moreover  they also gave some useful suggestions for .the establishment of new extra academic activities that may enhance their oral competence

Abstract

Technological developments of education are increasingly influencing institution, such as English language courses. This study aims to determine the benefits that can be felt from the existence of digital literacy technology in English language course institutions. The method used in this research is a descriptive method through a literature review or literature study. According to Milya Sari and Asmendri (2020: 44) literature study is one of the research methods carried out by collecting information and data using various kinds of sources in the library, such as reference books, research results similar, previous articles, notes, and various reviews related to research problems. This literature study will produce secondary data. According to Edi Riadi (2016: 48) (in Meita Sekar Sari and Muhammad Zefri, 2019: 311), secondary data is data generated indirectly from the research object. The results of the study found that using digital literacy in English courses is beneficial for improving students' English skills, for example, by giving assignments to review and create an article, which can then be presented in learning activities. Thus, students can improve their knowledge, writing, and communication skills using English.

Abstract

This paper aims to explore the motherhood gender issue presented in Coraline's novel by Neil Gaiman (2002) and its film adaptation, directed by Henry Selick (2009). It primarily revolves around the portrayal of motherhood in the works, along with the portrayal of characters, family issues, and gender roles. The paper looks up into the portrayal of motherhood in both novel and film adaption, examining how the horror of Female Gothic and fantasy elements are used to reimagine motherhood and unsettle traditional gender roles. The paper will take a feminist literary criticism approach and make use of essential theoretical frameworks such feminist motherhood theory and the Female Gothic. Through the analysis of the two versions of Coraline, I found the portrayal of motherhood through narrative and visual. The findings of the research reveal that both the Coraline book and the movie, through the media's elements, challenge stereotypes and ideas of maternal sacrifice and compassion by portraying motherhood as a complex experience. Coraline offers perspective on Female Gothic and motherhood that confronts traditional gender expectations and contributes to a broader view about the representation of motherhood in popular culture.

Abstract

In the post-pandemic era, several technologies are recommended to address some of the issues faced by English language learning. The hybrid learning model comes to answer this challenge by utilizing technology through integrated online and offline learning in the classroom at the same time. Therefore, the paper aims to present a better understanding of hybrid learning in the English teaching and learning process during the post-pandemic era. The systematic searching method was applied, and 23 articles published from 2020 until 2023 were selected for this paper. Most of them were written in Asian nations. The finding shows that hybrid learning was well received by both teachers and students. Since this teaching model paved the way and provided a new window for English language practice, it has also been underlined by many academics and is being applied in English teaching and learning. In conclusion, the hybrid learning model can be an optional language learning model in the post-pandemic era.

Abstract

The rapid changes in world civilization in various countries are marked by the unlimited use of information technology. The rapid development of information technology in the digital era makes people need more than just literacy; they need a learning perspective that is able to educate them about the benefits of effective and critical filtering of valid information. To develop abilities and skills, not only can they be achieved through formal education. One of them is a digital-based non-formal learning program that facilitates the community's development in the digitalization era, namely online courses. The research method used is the System Literature Reviewer, or SLR, method. Where in the process do researchers collect, enter, process, and store data? This method aims to solve the problems that researchers have through a literature review of previous journals. Nonformal education provides many options for meeting needs in a digital era; this iS certainly tailored to the needs and circumstances of the community to be addressed. Social society will be studied as the fulfillment of needs occurs so that adjustments to nonformal education methods will increasingly develop. Online learning outcomes are as good or better than conventional learning outcomes. Although it has been found that there are positive outcomes from online learning, it is not certain that this is applicable to all courses. There is no evidence that online learning is superior as a learning medium, which is in line with previous literature.

Abstract

Self-directed learning is a method of education in which students are in charge of their education. Self-directed learners take the initiative to determine their learning requirements, establish learning objectives, and create and carry out learning plans. To determine the potential and efficacy of self-directed learning in English language education, the goal of this research is to present and analyze the features of self-directed learning in English language education. This systematic literature review conducted 15 papers published between 2015 and 2023 that were accepted for this investigation by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. The results of this study suggest that self-directed learning offers significant learning potential for students. Students can plan their time accordingly. The result highlights the need for an all-encompassing educational strategy to improve student's abilities in a variety of areas, including English subject objectives like self-directed learning. The process of self-directed learning depends on motivation.
