Abstract

Argumentative writing is an essential aspect of students’ academic life. Students are commonly required to produce this type of writing as it reflects their ability to think logically and critically. Nevertheless, it may prove to be quite challenging for students, especially for Indonesian EFL learners as they may not be accustomed to writing this kind of text in English. There are some specific elements that must be present for a work to be considered a good argumentative writing, and these elements may be difficult to formulate when writing in another language. To understand the elements of an argumentative writing, one model that is commonly used is the one proposed by the contemporary British philosopher Stephen Toulmin, i.e., the Toulmin’s Argument Pattern (TAP). Some of the key elements highlighted in this model include claim, reasons, evidence, warrants, and rebuttals. Although there have been several studies that focused on the implementation of this model to analyze argumentative writings, not many have directly compared the writings of Indonesian male and female EFL learners. Hence, this study is an attempt to explore how male and female learners from Indonesia produce argumentative writings. More specifically, whether they utilize the elements of argument structures similarly or differently. The data is taken from the International Corpus Network of Asian Learners of English (ICNALE), with a total of 30 pieces of writing that are analyzed. This is divided evenly between the two groups, i.e., 15 writings from male learners and 15 writings from female learners. The data is analyzed qualitatively as no specific calculations are involved when comparing the results from both groups. The findings reveal that only two of the six elements are employed by the learners in their writings, and that there are some similarities and differences in the way the male and female learners utilize the elements in their paragraphs.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the syntactic scope of information boards found in self-cleaning (Malukat) temples in Gianyar, Bali. In addition, this study also examines the translation strategies of bilingual information boards (Indonesian and English). The method used in this research is a qualitative approach in order to describe the syntactic scope and translation strategies on the data in found in Tirta Empul Temple. The data analysis applies the theory of landscape linguistics proposed by Yendra and Artawa (2020) and is supported by several micro linguistics theories, as follows: 1) syntactic scope theory by Noortyani (2017), 2) translation strategy theory by Molina and Albir (2002), and 3) translation equivalence theory by Nida (2000). The results of this study show that the information boards in the temples have various syntactic scopes, namely in the form of phrases and sentences. However, it is dominantly found in the form of sentences. It is because the information conveyed on the boards is more detail and clearly presented so that they are easily understood by visitors. Meanwhile, the translation strategy of the public space signboard uses calque, literal, established equivalent, and reduction strategies. The literal translation strategy dominantly used on the public signs at the temples because it is easier to understand since it is translated word per word.

Abstract

Writing is used as a tool for communication as well as learning, thinking, and organizing knowledge or ideas. Unfortunately, In Indonesian context, English writing represents a skill that is seen as exceptionally challenging for students. This study aimed to look into the metacognitive strategies employed by EFL students who were considered successful in writing assessments. The participants were seven students of English Education Master’s Program at Universitas Negeri Jakarta who completed writing assessments at the C1 level on the website. The text analysis method was used in this study. At the end of the lesson, students' self-reflection was examined to determine their metacognitive strategies in the cognitive, social, affective, and motivational domains. Each student's metacognitive strategy applications were quantified, and the metacognitive strategy content was classified and reported interpretively. According to the findings, students are more likely to use a variety of metacognitive strategies with the cognitive domain being the most frequently used domain when completing writing assessments. They were discovered to be goal-oriented, with a greater likelihood of focusing not only on a course-related objective but additionally on an objective to improve their language learning abilities. Furthermore, this study suggests that self-reflection can be used to investigate students’ learning strategies and to promote students' control over the writing skills learning process.

Abstract

In non-English speaking countries, some teachers found it difficult to teach the target language in monolingualism because some of the learners felt anxious about learning English as a foreign language, or called foreign language anxiety (FLA), so teachers implemented translanguaging in their EFL classes. This paper explores students’ perspectives on pedagogical translanguaging and the point of view on whether the use of translanguaging is beneficial in the English foreign language (EFL) classroom and how translanguaging helps EFL learners through their FLA. The participants of this research are four students in a junior private Islamic school in Indonesia. The methodology of this research is qualitative, while the type of research used is a case study and analysis with thematic analysis. The findings of this paper are that students get more benefits when the teacher uses translanguaging in their class because it helps them understand the learning objectives, the teacher's instructions, and gives them the confidence to follow the English language learning without fear of misinterpretation. Translanguaging can manage and negotiate students’ FLA in the EFL classroom.

Abstract

This study focused on the relational values of grammatical features in the docudrama film The Social Dilemma. The Social Dilemma is a docudrama that was released on Netflix in 2020 and it is the combination of documentary-style interviews with experts in the fields of technology, social media, and psychology, as well as dramatized sequences that illustrate the potential negative impacts of social media and technology on society. Relational values in critical discourse analysis (CDA) refer to how language is used to construct and negotiate social relationships between different groups and individuals. To conduct this study, the researcher used the main theory from Fairclough (2013) that focused on three grammatical features of the text: modes of sentence, modality, and pronouns. This study aims to understand how language is used to construct and maintain social relationships, to reveal the power dynamics that underlie communication in society, particularly in the docudrama film The Social Dilemma, and to describe it in the discussion. This study only analyzed the grammatical features of text expressed by some interviewees. This study used descriptive qualitative which is very common for conducting research in social sciences. This study also used critical discourse analysis (CDA) to provide a critical perspective on language use and its role in shaping social realities, power relations, and ideologies.

Abstract

Gender stereotypes are views and beliefs about how men and women typically act in society. For example, women are supposed to be nurturing and feminine, while men are supposed to be strong and masculine. Gender stereotypes become problematic when they create certain expectations or limit opportunities for one social group. This study aims to examine gender stereotypes toward women in Mata Najwa Talk Show entitled “Susahnya Jadi Perempuan – Part 2”. This is a qualitative study that applies the theory of critical discourse analysis by Sara Mills. The theory focuses on the positioning of actors in the text, commonly known as the subject-object position and the writer-reader position. However, the subject-object position is the primary focus of this study. The results showed that the subjects are one woman and four men with various perspectives about gender stereotypes. According to the female subject, there are several negative stereotypes about women that are deeply ingrained in society. These stereotypes are caused by patriarchal values that prioritize men over women in terms of privilege, dominance, and power. The four male subjects have different views regarding the stereotypes about women. These various perspectives are due to different backgrounds, such as experience, education, family values, and social circle. Men who are raised in patriarchal families and are surrounded by people who have patriarchal values tend to adopt and internalize these values. Meanwhile, men who are aware of issues and obstacles faced by women are generally more understanding and considerate.

Abstract

The endless oppression of patriarchy creates competition in women's relationships. Women observe, defeat, insult, belittle, and overthrow each other, which is included in the acts of internalized misogyny. Internalized misogyny is a tool used by patriarchy to keep women as subordinate by diverting women's attention from opposing patriarchy to fighting among themselves. Internalized misogyny strengthens the oppression of women in society. Women evaluate other women from their behavior, physical appearance, and even their private lives. Discriminatory acts such as mockery, bullying, labeling, decreasing women's value, and exploitation of women's rights unknowingly also have been committed by women. Thus, the main focus of this paper is to reveal how internalized misogyny occurs in the process of women’s opposition to patriarchy that is included in a movie entitled Lady J. This movie shows that unknowingly for women, in an attempt to defeat patriarchy, women sacrificed other women. The movie narrates a story of a Marquise who is a female aristocrat in France who intends to take revenge on her ex-husband by working with a family of prostitutes. The aim of this paper is to examine internalized misogyny depicted in Lady J movie and to criticize the movies containing internalized misogyny acts that tend to be unrealized or even normalized. This research uses theories of misogyny, bad women, and silencing by Kate Manne and the relations of the patriarchal system and the internalization of discrimination by Sheryl Sandberg. This research uses data collection and analysis methods that reveal the action of internalized misogyny that occurs in the relationship between female figures and their resistances.
