Abstract

Teaching English in particular cultural contexts requires supporting skills, such as situating teaching strategies and learning material with students’ conditions and intercultural sensitivity. This study explores how the lecturers teach English to EFL Students in a culturally specific context. The design of this study used multiple case studies. This study's data collection uses semi-structured interviews through Zoom meetings with two English lecturers who taught English in Gorontalo and Papua. Then the data analysis used a thematic analysis. The findings of this study show that teaching English in Gorontalo and Papua needs some supporting competencies, such as intercultural competence (lecturers’ ability to adapt to the new culture and environment and understand how students behave, think, and interact) and pedagogical competence (lecturers’ ability in formulating, adapting, and negotiating appropriate teaching method and learning material with students need). The results of this study expand the discourse surrounding the instruction of English as a foreign language within culturally-specific contexts, highlighting the significance of multilingual education in the Indonesian context. Therefore, this study implies that lecturers who teach in a culturally different context should have those competencies so they are not culture shock.

Abstract

This study evaluated the language use in students’ speaking production. It was aimed to classify and analyze the level of attitude as one of subsystems appraisal theory proposed by Martin and White (2005). The attitude subsystem focused on the choice of words, phrases and structure by speakers to convey their reviews on an issue. The data were taken from 30 students’ reviews of presentation about outfit in a private university in Cirebon through descriptive qualitative method with spoken discourse analysis. The data were taken by transcribing the recorded students’ reviews into text, classifying into the clauses and analyzing the appraising items to conclude the attitude resources in the students’ reviews. The finding of this study demonstrates that appreciation is the most dominant used in students’ reviews to convey their representation to the things toward the outfit presentation. That makes their reviews are appreciative than emotional and judgemental to express their opinion about outfit presentation. This study suggests English lecturers to informs students the importance of attitudinal words usage in order to strengthen their voices, especially in speaking.

Abstract

Children learn to speak their native language through a process known as language acquisition. Instead of being subjected to the same conditioning as adults, children are born with the innate ability to pick up a new language as part of their natural development. The aim of this research is to understand the challenges involved in teaching children their first language and to gain insight into the process by which infants acquire this language through the development of its syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic components. Qualitative methods were used in this study to examine the first language acquisition of children aged 3 years. The participants in this study were a 3-year-old child and her biological mother. Interviews and observations of children and mothers were conducted to obtain the necessary data. The result is that children aged 3 years are found to have problems in syntactical, phonological, and pragmatic

Abstract

Yogyakarta, known as the educational city, has attracted students from different regions to move to Yogyakarta and continue their studies there. This mobility allows the students to interact with others whose different languages and cultural backgrounds. The interaction may positively or negatively impact their heritage language preservation. Being exposed to different languages and cultures may foster multilingualism and cultural diversity. On the other hand, it may also result in lost heritage languages, especially when students switch from using their heritage language to using Indonesian when communicating with others. Losing a language is something that we do not expect. Thus, research on this topic is necessary to identify the challenges of heritage language preservation. This paper examines students’ attitudes toward their heritage languages: whether they have positive or negative attitudes toward heritage language preservation. A small-scale analysis is conducted on students at Universitas Sanata Dharma. The methods applied in gathering the data are distributing a questionnaire and completing a structured interview with some selected students. The findings show that the respondents have a positive attitude toward the heritage language, and their mobility influences heritage language preservation because it leads to less exposure toward the language.

Abstract

As a means of facilitating access to knowledge and information, translation is critical in providing access to a wide range of subjects, particularly literature. The essence of translation in literature is crucial since, other than making literary work accessible all across the globe; it also enables writers to express themselves across cultures and generations while simultaneously influencing the reader's interpretation of literary works. As an instance of a translation product, the novel, which is a form of literature, can be cited as an example. The process of translating a novel is not just a matter of transferring language but also of disseminating its figurative language as well as determining the appropriate expressions to capture the emotions of the original work. However, translating a novel is more complicated than translating another genre of literature since a writer mainly utilizes a myriad of figurative language in their writing. As a result of this, there is likely an expression shift during the translation of figurative language. Examining expression shifts, which are changes in the way figurative language or expressions are presented when translated from one language to another, in the translation of figurative language within novels is highly relevant, as understanding these shifts can lead to improved translation practices, foster a deeper appreciation of cultural nuances, and better preserve the author's intended meaning across languages. This study strives to discover what types of expression shifts are present in the English translation of the figurative language in Leila S. Chudori's Laut Bercerita. Subsequently, this study is designed to analyze how figurative language is shifting in terms of its values of expression during translation. The data for the analysis are taken from Laut Bercerita (2017) by Leila S. Chudori, along with its English version titled The Sea Speaks His Name (2020), translated by John McGlynn. This novel is selected due to its figurative that is well-written, well-imagined, and easily discernible by readers of all backgrounds. In this study, a contribution will also be made to the field of translation studies, with an emphasis on the shift in expression during the translation of figurative language within a novel.

Abstract

Currently, gamification is one of the highly discussed topics among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) practitioners. It is worth mentioning that the rising interest in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) increases the preference for learning towards online gamification. This study aims to provide a review regarding online gamification platforms for practicing EFL students’ reading skills. This research used library research method and followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guideline developed by Page et al. to collect and reduce data, and finally present a transparent, complete, and accurate review. The data were 20 articles published worldwide between 2012 and 2022 and sourced from journal finders of ScienceDirect, Springer, Taylor & Francis, and Google Scholar. Furthermore, this study used NVIVO 14 and Microsoft Excel 2016 to analyze the selected data and Mendeley for reference management. The results showed that Kahoot!, Quizizz, Socrative, Bibliobattle, Classcraft, ClassDojo, Duolingo, Genially, Into the Book, M-reader, Memrise, Padlet, Quizlet, and ReadTheory.org are feasible to be used to practice EFL students’ reading skills, with Kahoot! and Quizizz as the most popular. In addition, the context of the studies involved as the research data such as the year published, educational level, national origins, and methodologies were also mentioned. Further, it is implied that EFL teachers can use online gamification platforms to leverage not only students’ motivation and engagement in practicing students’ reading skills but also their learning achievements through enjoyable and interactive learning while allowing students to acquire ICT skills.
