Abstract

Introduction: Giomer is a resin-based restorative material consisting of prereacted glass ionomer (PRG) filler which can release fluoride. Carbonated beverages, popular beverages which contain acids that rich in H+ ions, can diffuse into the resin-based restoration and cause high solubility. Objective: To analyze the effect of immersion in carbonated drinks on water absorption and diametral tensile strength of giomer. Methods: Giomer was packed into a stainless-steel mold to obtain sample with diameter of 6.0±0.03mm and height of 3.0±0.09mm. The samples were divided into 2 groups for water absorption test and 3 groups for diametrical tensile strength test. Ten samples of giomer were soaked in artificial saliva for 4 days as a control group, 10 giomer samples were immersed in carbonated drinks for 6 hours, then replaced with artificial saliva for 18 hours and repeated for 4 days as a treatment group, and 10 samples of giomer were used as immediate group for direct diametral tensile strength test. Samples were incubated at 37°C. Results: Mann-Whitney test showed no significant difference (p>0.05) in giomer absorption between the control group (0.99±0.54%) and the treatment group (2.37±2.62%). One Way ANOVA test showed significant difference (p<0.05) in giomer diametral tensile strength among the immediate group (29.6±3.7MPa), the control group (51.1±3.9MPa) and the treatment group (44.8±5.3MPa). Conclusion: Immersion in carbonated beverages did not show significant difference with artificial saliva for the water absorption ability of giomer. However, the diametral tensile strength of giomer decreased after immersion in carbonated beverages for 24 hours.

Abstract

Introduction: Malocclusion is a dental and oral health problem that often occurs in children and adolescents. The prevalence of dental and mouth problems in East Kalimantan Province is still quite high with the largest age group being 5-9 years. Knowledge about dental and oral health, especially in the aspect of child malocclusion, is related to the level of education of parents. Objective: To determine the relationship between the education of the mother of a student at SDN 005 Penajam, East Kalimantan and the level of knowledge about child malocclusion. Methods: using an analytic observational method with a cross-sectional, the instrument used was a modified questionnaire from Pravara Institute of Medical Sciences & Rural Dental College, Loni, India. The research population was female students at SDN 005 Penajam, East Kalimantan. Sampling using total sampling technique. Results: from 133 respondents, 60% (n=24) of mothers with tertiary education had good knowledge of malocclusion, 39.02% (n=16) of mothers with secondary education and 48.08% (n=25) of mothers with education have less knowledge about malocclusion. There is a relationship between the education of the mothers of SDN 005 Penajam, East Kalimantan and the level of knowledge about malocclusion in children (p=0.000) and r=0.371 (weak correlation strength). Conclusion: Based on the results of this study it can be concluded that there is a relationship between the education of the mothers of students at SDN 005 Penajam, East Kalimantan and the level of knowledge about child malocclusion (p=0.000). The higher the education the better the results of knowledge. By having good knowledge about malocclusion, mothers can take preventive, curative, and rehabilitative actions so as to reduce the prevalence of malocclusion in children.

Abstract

Introduction: Staphylococcus aureus is a pathogen bacteria that forms biofilm and induces acute inflammation associated with dentoalveolar abscess, which needs antibiotics such as amoxicillin for the treatment. Due to antibiotic resistance and various side effects, natural ingredients are needed as an alternative treatment. Arumanis mango leaves (Mangifera indica L.) contains mangiferin, flavonoid, and tannin which are expected to inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and its biofilm formation. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the antibacterial and antibiofilm effects of Mangifera indica L. leaves against Staphylococcus aureus in vitro. Methods: This study was in vitro laboratory experiment with post test only control group design. Antibacterial test was carried out by plate count method and antibiofilm test was carried out by microtiter plate biofilm assay method. Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 was cultured in BHI broth in 37oC for 24h with anaerobic condition. The present study used ethanol extract of Mangifera indica L. leaves in 6 different concentrations: 3,125%, 6,25%, 12,5%, 25%, 50%, and 100%. Amoxicillin was used as positive control and DMSO 10% used as negative control. Data was analyzed with Shapiro-wilk test, One-way ANOVA test, and post hoc Tukey HSD test with p<0,05 as the level of significance. Results: The most effective concentration to inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus was 100% extract compared to negative control (p<0,05). The most effective concentration against Staphylococcus aureus biofilm formation was 100% extract in 3hr incubation compared to negative control (p<0,05). Conclusion: Ethanol extract of Mangifera indica L. leaves has been shown in vitro to have antibacterial and antibiofilm properties against Staphylococcus aureus.

Abstract

Introduction: Gingival tissue plays an important role in smile aesthetics, especially in the anterior maxillary region. A gummy smile (GS) is a gingival condition that appears excessive when the patient smiles. The prevalence of gummy smile in individuals aged from 20 to 30 is 10% of population. It is more common in women and can cause aesthetic problems. Gummy smile aetiology is multifactorial. This case report discusses gummy smile case caused by altered passive eruption (APE) and associated with the presence of aberrant frenum. Case Report: A 19-year-old female patient with chief complaints of the excessive gingival display. The diagnosis of the case was confirmed by clinically healthy gingiva in an intact periodontium with gummy smile due to the presence of altered passive eruption type I-B accompanied by an aberrant frenum. The final surgical plan was aesthetic crown lengthening (CL) with flap surgery and osteotomy simultaneous with a frenotomy. Conclusion: The aesthetic crown lengthening surgery and frenotomy can be performed simultaneously to correct the gummy condition and improve the patient’s smile profile. Appropriate examination, diagnosis, and treatment planning help achieve optimal patient outcomes.

Abstract

The utility of dental materials to posing oral diseases have impact in the risk of Bisphenol A (BPA) exposure which can be harmful to human organs. BPA used in dentistry is related to the production of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins. For instance, composite filling materials and dental sealant are containing BPA that can promote risk to endocrine-disrupting, estrogenic effect, and renal exposure. The current study is reviewing the BPA exposures of dental materials and it impact risk to the systemic health. This systematic review critically evaluates, and the information gathered form several literatures. The source of these articles was Pub Med and Web of Science, search done with the following terms: BPA of dental materials, BPA exposure, BPA and health risks, BPA, and oral health. BPA exposure found in oral mucosa and saliva after the application of BPA-containing dental materials. BPA derivatives used in dental products have not been evaluated for the endocrine disruptor, estrogenicity. BPA exposures can be absorbed through the oral mucosa and may lead to internal exposures the absorption of BPA from the gastrointestinal tract. Manufacturers should be required to report complete information on the chemical composition of dental materials and strict precaution application techniques must be considered by the practitioner.

Abstract

Introduction: Zirconia reinforced glass ionomer cement is a new generation glass ionomer cement restoration material with the addition of zirconia nanoparticles that is equivalent in strength to amalgam while maintaining ability to release fluoride like conventional glass ionomer cements. Surface roughness can be affected by various factors including the use of mouthwash. Mouthwash that is commonly used during pandemic COVID-19 is 1% povidone iodine. Previous study stated that povidone iodine mouthwash contains alcohol and acidic pH which can decrease the hardness of composite resins. Objective: To determine the effect of 1% povidone iodine mouthwash on the surface roughness of zirconia reinforced glass ionomer cement. Methods: This was a true experimental laboratory research with a pre test and post test control group design. The research samples consisted of 36 samples of zirconia reinforced glass ionomer cement with diameter of 10 mm and height of 2 mm. The samples were divided into two groups: the control group which was immersed in artificial saliva and the treatment group which was immersed in 1% povidone iodine mouthwash for 24 hours. Surface roughness was measured using a surface roughness tester. Data were analyzed using Paired Sample T-Test and Independent Sample T-Test. Results: Paired Sample T-test results showed no significant difference in the surface roughness of the control group between before and after immersion with p value = 0,074 (p>0,05) and a significant difference in the surface roughness of the treatment group between before and after immersion with p value = 0,000 (p<0,05). Independent Sample T-Test results showed significant difference in the surface roughness between the control group and the treatment group with p value = 0,000 (p <0.05). Conclusion: 1% povidone iodine mouthwash has an effect on increasing the surface roughness of zirconia reinforced glass ionomer cement.

Abstract

Introduction: Hard liner is a denture relining material which can be used directly at the chairside in brief time. The characteristic of the hardliner is its susceptibility towards porosity which consequently resulting biofilm accumulation and Candida albicans colonization. Thus, there is a need for denture cleaning. Alkaline peroxide is a type of denture cleanser which is widely used, but it could affect the physical properties of hard liner. One of the traditional ingredients that have the potential to be used as an alternative to denture cleanser is cinnamon. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different types of denture cleansers on the surface roughness of hard liner. Method: Twelve cylindrical hard liner specimens (15mm x 10mm, ASTM: D-2240 64T) were divided into three groups: group I (immersed in distilled water), group II (immersed in alkaline peroxide) and group III (immersed in 1.5% extract cinnamon). All specimens were soaked for 15 minutes/day for 7 days. Surface roughness was measured using surface roughness tester (Handysurf E-MC-S24B Japan). Data were analysed using one-way ANOVA and post hoc Bonferroni (α=0.05). Results: The highest average of surface roughness was shown on specimens immersed in alkaline peroxide, followed by specimens immersed in 1.5% cinnamon extract and distilled water, respectively. There were a significant difference in surface roughness values in all groups (p<0.05). Conclusion: There is an effect of type of denture cleanser on the surface hardness of hard liner.

Abstract

Introduction: CBCT-3D (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) is an advanced radiographic imaging technology that is currently being developed and utilized in dentistry, with the advantages of accurately depicting three-dimensional (3D) tissue structures, minimal distortion, and low radiation dose. RSKGMP Universitas Airlangga is an educational dental hospital and one of the few hospitals in Surabaya city and also East Java Province that provides CBCT-3D examination services for various cases- thus becoming a referral center for the radiographic examination in the region. A lot of clinical case referrals have been recorded, but no one has researched the distribution of clinical cases referred for CBCT-3D examination. Objective: This study is aimed to determine the distribution of clinical cases referred for CBCT-3D radiographic examination at RSKGMP Universitas Airlangga based on origin, age, and gender. Methods: This study is a descriptive study with a sample of all clinical case medical records, CBCT-3D examination reference data at RSKGMP Universitas Airlangga from July 2015 to March 2020, which met the sample criteria. Furthermore, the data is tabulated and displayed using pie charts and bar charts. Results: Most referrals for CBCT-3D radiography came from internal referrals of RSKGMP Universitas Airlangga (78%). The elderly patients (46 years and over) had the most referrals (59%) of all age groups with the most indication for implant cases (78.9%). Female patients slightly more dominated the total referrals (57.5%) than male patients (42.5%). Conclusion: Most of the clinical cases of referral for CBCT-3D radiographic examination were implants and came from internal RSKGMP Universitas Airlangga, with the most referral age category being elderly and dominated by female patients.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to evaluate the accuracy of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) in determining and visualizing the morphology and morphometry of the mandibular condyle. Narrative reviews with article searches were carried out through NCBI's PubMed database and Scopus from September 2021–October 2021, with the inclusion criteria articles published in 2011–2021. The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) has a crucial role and is closely related to the masticatory system. The diagnosis of temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is not easy and is complex enough to require a comprehensive clinical and radiographic examination. Pathological changes such as erosion of the condyle, fracture, ankylosis, dislocation, and osteophyte can be well seen using CBCT imaging. CBCT images obtained with smaller field of view (FOV) have smaller a voxel size and a higher image resolution. FOV or scan volume refers to the anatomical area that will be included in the data volume or the area of the patient that will be irradiated. The dimension of FOV depends on the detector size and shape, the beam projection geometry, and the ability to collimate the beam. Voxel size is an important component of image quality, related to both the pixel size and the image matrix. Selection of small FOV and small voxel size is recommended because they provide better visualization and detail for the evaluation of morphology and morphometry of the condyle, especially the detection of erosion and defects on the condyle surface.

Abstract

Introduction: Porphyromonas gingivalis is bacteria that can form biofilms as the main cause of periodontitis. Mouthwash therapy in long term can cause mucositis and even oral cancer. Antibacterial potential of torch ginger flower (Etlingera elatior) can be developed as an alternative adjuvant therapy for periodontitis. Objective: Aims of this research was to determine the effect of torch ginger flower ethanol extract against degradation of P. gingivalis biofilm. Methods: This research used ethanolic extract of torch ginger flower with concentrations 1.56 mg/mL, 3.125 mg/mL, 6.25 mg/mL, 12.5 mg/mL, 25 mg/mL, and 50 mg/mL. Chlorhexidine gluconate 0.2% was used as positive control and DMSO 1% was used as negative control. Measurement of P. gingivalis biofilm degradation used microtiter plate assay with crystal violet 1% staining which reads its optical density at wavelength of 450 nm. Data were analyzed by one way ANOVA and Post hoc LSD. Results: The percentage of P. gingivalis biofilm degradation with torch ginger flower ethanol extract sequentially were 12.47%, 30.56%, 57.12%, 71.36%, and 74.83%. The analysis showed that there was a significant difference (p<0,05) between treatment groups torch ginger flower ethanol extract, as well as between torch ginger flower ethanol extract with DMSO 1% and chlorhexidine gluconate 0.2%. Optimum concentration of ethanol extract of torch ginger flower on P. gingivalis biofilm degradation was 25 mg/mL and showed no significant difference with chlorhexidine gluconate 0,2% (p>0,05). Conclusion: Conclusion of this research is torch ginger flower (Etlingera elatior) ethanol extract has P. gingivalis biofilm degradation activity.biofilm
