Abstract

Chitosan tilapia scales is one of the chitosans which has benefits as an antibacterial in dental root canal, the physical size of chitosan can be converted into smaller particle sizes in the form of nanoparticles. For the material of root canal irrigation as a gold standard is sodium hypochlorite 0.5% -5.25%. One of the bacteria found in the root canal is Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of nano chitosan tilapia scales plus 1.5% and 2.5% NaOCl in inhibiting Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This research is a laboratory experimental study with the research design used is the Post Test Only Control Group Design antibacterial test Kirby Bauer. The sample used was the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa which was divided into 4 groups: group 1 was the treatment group given nano chitosan of tilapia scales plus 1.5% NaOCl, group 2 was the treatment group given nano chitosan of tilapia scales plus 2.5% NaOCl, group 3 of the treatment group was given a positive control with Chlorhexidine and group 4 of the treatment group was given a negative control of aquadest with 6 repetitions for each. The results of statistical tests using the Least Significant Difference (LSD) test showed that there were significant differences in the inhibition zone between nano chitosan of tilapia scale plus 1.5% and 2.5% NaOCl with a value of r <0.05. The average inhibition power of nano chitosan of tilapia scales plus 1.5% NaOCl was 21.33 mm and nano chitosan of tilapia scales plus 2.5% NaOCl was 24.83. It can be concluded that nano chitosan of tilapia scale plus 1.5% NaOCl and nano chitosan of tilapia scale plus 2.5% NaOCl have very strong inhibition against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Nano chitosan of tilapia scales plus 2.5% NaOCl is more effective in inhibiting Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Keywords: Root canal irrigation NaOCl 2.5%, Nano Chitosan, Antibacterial

Abstract

Introduction: High nicotine levels from smoking can affect salivary composition and function, which in turn can contribute to oral health problems such as dental caries and periodontal disease. Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between smoking habits and nicotine levels with salivary flow rate and pH in students of the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Syiah Kuala. Methods: This study was a cross-sectional research design and examined 100 students of the Faculty of Engineering, Syiah Kuala University. Saliva collected by the spitting method. Results: The results of research on students of the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Syiah Kuala, show that smoking habits and nicotine levels have a significant on the flow rate and pH of saliva in student smokers. Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between smoking habits and nicotine levels in cigarettes, with flow rate and salivary pH in smoking students. The habit of smoking affects the decrease in salivary flow rate and changes in salivary pH, with a moderate to strong strength of relationship.

Abstract

Introduction: Dental caries remains one of the most prevalent oral diseases worldwide. Conventional diagnostic methods rely heavily on clinician expertise and may lead to diagnostic variability, particularly in early lesion detection. Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI), especially convolutional neural network (CNN)-based deep learning models, have shown promising performance in automated caries detection across various imaging modalities. Objective: This systematic review aimed to evaluate and summarise current evidence on CNN-based deep learning models for automated dental caries detection and segmentation, and to compare their diagnostic performance across imaging modalities. Methods: This review followed the PICO framework. Literature searches were conducted in PubMed, Cochrane, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar for studies published between 2022 and 2025. English-language quantitative studies utilising CNN-based models for caries detection with measurable diagnostic outcomes were included. Of 262 records identified, 50 articles were screened, and 11 studies met the eligibility criteria for qualitative synthesis. Results: The included studies comprised 18,206 radiographic images and evaluated multiple CNN architectures, including YOLO, R-CNN, UNet, ResNet, and MobileNetV2. YOLO demonstrated the highest diagnostic performance, achieving a mean accuracy of 0.957 and a sensitivity of 0.976, while MobileNetV2 showed the highest specificity (0.954). Among imaging modalities, periapical radiographs exhibited the highest mean diagnostic performance (0.884), followed by intraoral photographs (0.821) and CBCT images (0.810), whereas bitewing radiographs showed the lowest value (0.791). Conclusion: CNN-based deep learning models demonstrate strong potential for automated detection of dental caries. Detection-based architectures, particularly YOLO, showed superior performance, while imaging modality influenced diagnostic outcomes.

Abstract

Introduction: Tongue cancer is cancer that develops from the tongue epithelial cell. The mortality rate was 0.7/100,000 people all over the world. Modern therapy for this cancer is based on a better understanding of the molecular and cellular mechanisms of tongue cancer. Objective: The narrative review aims to analyze the modern treatment of tongue cancer. Methods: This study was conducted using a narrative literature review methodology. Relevant articles published from 2015-2025 were identified through a systematic search of electronic databases. The initial search yielded 2,837 records. Following the removal of duplicates and the screening of titles, abstracts, and full-text articles based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 45 articles were deemed eligible and included in the final review. Results: Modern cancer therapies have been developed not only to provide more selective targeting of cancer cells but also to minimize or eliminate treatment-related side effects. Current therapeutic strategies can be broadly classified into four major approaches: (1) inhibition of uncontrolled cell proliferation, (2) induction of apoptosis in cancer cells, (3) prevention of tissue invasion and metastasis, and (4) inhibition of angiogenesis. Conclusion: Advances in tongue cancer treatment have been largely driven by a growing understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying tumor development and progression. These molecular insights have facilitated the development of targeted therapeutic approaches aimed at improving treatment efficacy while reducing adverse effects. However, a limitation of this narrative review is the lack of discussion regarding the toxicological profiles of emerging therapeutic agents. Consequently, the potential adverse effects and safety considerations associated with these anticancer therapies were not comprehensively addressed.

Abstract

Introduction: Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a condition of slow and irreversible decline in kidney function, leading to the accumulation of metabolic waste products such as urea and creatinine. The buildup of these toxins can trigger systemic manifestations, including oral lesions such as uremic stomatitis. Although often overlooked, these oral manifestations can reduce patients’ quality of life and nutritional status due to pain during eating. Case Report: A 63-year-old female patient diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) was admitted to Prof. Dr. Margono Soekarjo Regional General Hospital. Laboratory tests revealed elevated levels of urea, creatinine, and potassium, as well as decreased hemoglobin and hematocrit, indicating the presence of anemia and hyperkalemia. An intraoral examination revealed an ulcerative lesion on the right lateral aspect of the tongue with a grayish-white base and a purplish hemorrhagic lesion on the base of the tongue, accompanied by pain during eating. The diagnosis was established as uremic stomatitis based on subjective and objective examinations, as well as a complete blood count. Management included systemic therapy and oral care using 0.2% chlorhexidine gluconate and Candistatin drops. Conclusion: Chronic kidney disease can trigger the appearance of uremic stomatitis in the oral cavity. Therefore, clinical examination of the oral cavity is essential for the early identification of systemic disorders while supportive management and oral hygiene education can help prevent complications and improve the comfort and quality of life of CKD patients.

Abstract

Introduction: Stress is an adaptive process and a natural response by individuals to environmental demands. However, excessive stress can negatively impact periodontal health, leading to gingivitis. Gingivitis can develop due to hormonal changes mediated by the Hypothalamic-Pituitary axis (HPA) and the sympathetic autonomic nervous system (ANS), as well as due to behavioural changes. Dental students facing frequent exposure to stressors will be at a heightened vulnerability. Objective: This study aimed to determine the association between academic stress levels, measured using the Perception of Academic Stress Scale (PASS), and gingival status, assessed using the Löe and Silness Gingival Index, among preclinical dental students at Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang. Methods: This correlational study employed a cross-sectional design. The study population consisted of preclinical dental students from the 2020–2023 cohorts at Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang. A total of 69 participants were selected using stratified random sampling. Academic stress was assessed using the Perception of Academic Stress Scale (PASS), while gingival status was evaluated through intraoral examination using the Gingival Index. The association between academic stress and gingival status was analyzed using Spearman’s correlation test. Results: A statistically significant positive correlation was found between academic stress levels and gingivitis (Spearman's rho = 0.309, p = 0.010), indicating a weak-to-moderate association. Conclusion: The findings indicate a statistically significant positive association of weak-to-moderate strength between academic stress and gingivitis among preclinical dental students at Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang.

Abstract

Introduction: This case series evaluated the efficacy of removable orthodontic appliances in managing mild to moderate anterior dental crowding. Objective: To determine the association between payment scheme, insurance participation, and economic status with orthodontic appliance preference among undergraduate students in West Jakarta. Case Report: Case I: A 21-year-old female with a Class I skeletal pattern. Clinical examination revealed a moderate crowding in the maxillary arch and a mild crowding in the mandibular arch with overjet  and overbite, except teeth 12 and 32. The patient was treated with a removable orthodontic appliance featuring an expansion screw and active components. Post-treatment demonstrated a reduction of the overjet, an increase in the overbite, and significant correction of anterior crowding in both arches. Case II: A 22-year-old patient with a chief complaint of misaligned lower front teeth three months after completing fixed orthodontic treatment. The patient Class II canine relationships, 3.5 mm overjet and mild crowding in both arches. The patient was treated with a removable orthodontic appliance, and successfully corrected the lower arch anterior crowding and reduced the overjet. Disscussion: The two cases demonstrated the effective use of a removable appliance in addressing different orthodontic problems. Combined with techniques such as interproximal reduction and regular follow-up, successfully improved dental alignment, overjet, overbite, and smile appearance. Conclusion: Removable orthodontic appliances offer a viable treatment modality for mild to moderate cases of dental crowding. This cases presented provide evidence supporting their effectiveness in improving dental alignment, thereby contributing to enhanced esthetics and patient confidence.

Abstract

Introduction: The primary goals of orthodontic treatment are to improve mastication function and tooth alignment. The choice of orthodontic appliance type can be influenced by various factors such as treatment payment plans and economic status. Objective: To determine the association between payment scheme, insurance participation, and economic status with orthodontic appliance preference among undergraduate students in West Jakarta. Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 158 undergraduate students in West Jakarta, taken by purposive sampling. Data collection was conducted using a questionnaire in September 2025. The questionnaire was distributed via Google Forms and consisted of eighteen questions. The Fisher's Exact test was used to examine the association between payment scheme, insurance participation, and economic status with orthodontic appliance preference. Results: Fixed orthodontic appliances were chosen by the majority of respondents (88%), with orthodontic specialists fitting the appliances (61.4%). Non-installment payment was the most popular payment method (85.4%), with 65.2% of respondents spending IDR 10,000,000 or more on treatment costs. The majority of respondents did not use insurance for orthodontic treatment (91.8%). There was a significant association between the father's income with orthodontic appliance preference (p= 0.018). Conclusion: Orthodontic appliance preference is associated with father's income. However, orthodontic appliance preference is not associated with payment schemes, insurance participation, parental education, parental occupation, or the mother's income. Collaboration between insurance companies and healthcare providers is needed to develop subsidy program towards orthodontic treatment.

Abstract

Introduction: Saliva is an important exocrine secretion in the oral cavity that plays a role in lubrication, mechanical cleansing, antimicrobial activity, and pH buffering. Coffee consumption can affect saliva characteristics due to its acidic nature and caffeine content. Arabica coffee contains lower caffeine (0.8–1.4%) with a smoother taste, while Robusta has higher caffeine (1.7–4.0%). Objective: To determine the comparison of unstimulated salivary flow rate and pH before, immediately after, and 40 minutes after consuming Arabica and Robusta coffee. Methods: Comparative analytic quasi-experimental design with 20 female participants aged 18–22 years per group, selected via purposive sampling, healthy without systemic disorders, medications affecting saliva, orthodontic treatment, active caries, or mildly underweight to mildly overweight BMI. Extracting 60 grams of coffee using a coffee machine to produce 150 mL solution without sediment. Sequential treatments: Day-1 plain water, Day-2 Arabica, Day-3 Robusta; measurement of salivary flow rate and pH using spitting. Data analysis using Friedman and Wilcoxon tests. Results: Before intervention, no significant differences were observed in salivary flow rate (p > 0.841) or salivary pH (p > 0.137). Both Arabica and Robusta coffee solutions significantly increased salivary flow rate immediately after consumption (p < 0.008). At 40 minutes, salivary flow rate remained significantly higher in the Arabica group compared with Robusta (p = 0.029). Conclusion: Coffee consumption significantly increased unstimulated salivary flow rate, the Arabica more sustained stimulatory effect than Robusta. Although transient pH fluctuations occurred after coffee consumption, salivary pH did not differ significantly between interventions.

Abstract

Introduction: Periodontal disease is a major oral health problem worldwide, with Porphyromonas gingivalis recognized as one of the primary causative bacteria. Ajwa date seeds (Phoenix dactylifera L.) have potential for development as a natural mouthwash due to their antibaterial properties, which are attributed to various bioactive compounds, including flavonoids, tannins, and saponins. Objective: To evaluate the antibacterial effect of a mouthwash containing ethanol extract of ajwa date seeds (Phoenix dactylifera L.) against the growth of Porphyromonas gingivalis. Methods: This laboratory experimental study employed a post-test-only control group design. The samples were divided into five groups: a positive control, a negative control, and three treatment groups receiving mouthwash containing ethanol extract of ajwa date seeds at concentrations of 3.25%, 6.5%, and 12.5%. Antibacterial activity was evaluated using the disc diffusion method on Mueller–Hinton Agar (MHA), with six replicates for each group. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's Honestly Significant Difference (HSD) post hoc test. Results: Mouthwash containing ethanol extract of ajwa date seeds inhibited the growth of Porphyromonas gingivalis, as demonstrated by the formation of inhibition zones around the discs. A concentration-dependent increase in the diameter of the inhibition zone was observed. The mean inhibition zone diameters were 10.175 mm, 12.300 mm, and 14.442 mm for the 3.25%, 6.5%, and 12.5% extract concentrations. Conclusion: Mouthwash containing ethanol extract of ajwa date seeds (Phoenix dactylifera L.) significantly inhibited the growth of Porphyromonas gingivalis. The antibacterial activity in 12.5% concentration demonstrating the greatest inhibitory effect.
