Abstract

The interaction between Islam and Javanese culture has not only produced a dynamic dialectic but has also often generated tension when local traditions intersect with the normative values of the Qur’an. This study aims to analyze the relationship between the Qur’an and local culture through the deconstruction of Javanese religious traditions as represented in Tafsir Al-Iklīl fī Ma‘ānī al-Tanzīl by Misbah Musthofa. Employing a qualitative method with a sociological approach to Qur’anic exegesis, this study examines how interpretation is shaped through the interrelation between the exegete and the socio-cultural context of his community. The primary data are drawn from the text of Tafsir Al-Iklīl fī Ma‘ānī al-Tanzīl, while supporting data are obtained from relevant secondary literature. The findings reveal that Tafsir Al-Iklīl represents a contextual model of Qur’anic interpretation grounded in the social reality of Javanese Muslim society. Through his critique of traditions such as tahlilan, excessive grave visitation, teacher veneration, ruwatan, and tumpengan, Misbah Musthofa emphasizes the Qur’an’s role as both a means of purifying faith and a vehicle for cultural transformation. His interpretive structure displays a deconstructive pattern in which the Qur’anic text is not merely explained literally but projected as a form of social critique against religious practices influenced by pre-Islamic elements. Misbah Musthofa establishes a hermeneutical relationship between the divine text and cultural context, producing a progressive and emancipatory model of exegesis. Although rooted in the pesantren (Islamic boarding school) tradition, his interpretation demonstrates a strong rational and moral orientation, positioning the Qur’an as a “living text” that continuously dialogues with contemporary realities. These findings indicate that the deconstruction of local culture in Tafsir Al-Iklīl constitutes a reformulation of Javanese pesantren exegesis toward a critical, reflective, and transformative socio-cultural mode of interpretation.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze Fazlur Rahman's ideas within the framework of decolonizing Islamic studies by highlighting the relevance of Qur'anic ethics to the development of Artificial Intelligence. Through a qualitative approach based on text analysis and literature study, this research explores how Fazlur Rahman's dual method, specifically the dual movement from text to context, can be utilized as an epistemological instrument in liberating Islamic studies from the hegemony of secular and fragmented Western rationality. Decolonization in this context does not only mean liberation from Western methodological influence, but also the reconstruction of the Islamic scientific paradigm rooted in revelation and universal ethical values summarized in the terms Iman, Islam, and Taqwa. The integration of Qur'anic ethics with Artificial Intelligence is interpreted as an effort to bring moral awareness, social responsibility, and prophetic spirituality into the development of modern technology. The results of the study show that the values of faith, justice, trustworthiness, and benefit, as formulated by Fazlur Rahman, can be an ethical framework in responding to the moral challenges of using Artificial Intelligence. This research contributes to strengthening an autonomous, contextual, and human-oriented Islamic scientific paradigm, while also emphasizing the importance of liberating Islamic reasoning from the dominance of colonial epistemology in facing the digital era and the Artificial Intelligence revolution.

Abstract

This study examines state policies on religious freedom in Indonesia through decolonial perspectives, analyzing how colonial legacies continue to shape contemporary religious governance despite constitutional guarantees of pluralism. Using qualitative methods through extensive literature review, this research traces the evolution of religious policies from pre-independence through the Sukarno and Suharto periods to the post-Reformasi decentralization era, revealing how postcolonial nationalism has reproduced rather than transcended colonial patterns of categorizing, surveilling, and controlling religious diversity. The findings demonstrate that systematic discrimination against minority groups, particularly Ahmadiyah and Shia communities, represents not merely policy implementation failures but structural continuities with colonial governmentality that renders certain religious expressions illegitimate. Through case studies of violence in Cikeusik and Sampang, regional discriminatory regulations, and the closure of houses of worship, this research illuminates how decentralization has paradoxically enabled both local accommodations and new forms of majoritarian control. While Indonesia's historical, political, and cultural contexts have shaped its approach to religious diversity and tolerance, the practical implementation of constitutional rights often faces significant challenges rooted in colonial epistemologies. The study argues that achieving genuine religious freedom requires comprehensive decolonization—transforming epistemological frameworks, dismantling discriminatory legal structures, reforming religious education, and supporting civil society resistance—rather than merely technical policy adjustments within inherited colonial-postcolonial frameworks, thereby addressing persistent issues of pluralism and intolerance that continue to affect religious minorities.

Abstract

This article seeks to discuss of kasyf—the unveiling of inner truths—in the Syadziliyah Sufi healing practices of Tulungagung, Indonesia, focusing on santri experiences. Employing a phenomenological approach, data were gathered through observations and in-depth interviews with santri who have undergone kasyf. This article argues that kasyf significantly supports tazkiyatun nafs (self-purification) and enhances spiritual well-being. Notably, santri display differing levels of kasyf despite following the same zikir practices, highlighting its nature as a divinely bestowed experience rather than a structured objective. This sets Syadziliyah healing apart from other Sufi traditions, which often emphasize more systematic spiritual and psychological frameworks. The study also critiques Karim Mitha’s notion of “self-knowledge,” proposing “soul-knowledge”—an integrative framework combining self-knowledge and tazkiyatun nafs—to guide salik toward discovering the “true soul.” The research presents a novel model of transformative Sufi healing in the Syadziliyah tradition, emphasizing individualized spiritual experiences and the central role of divine grace in personal spiritual development.

Abstract

Islam–Hindu relations in Kediri are often portrayed as a form of harmonious coexistence, yet such a view risks overlooking the social mechanisms that actively produce and sustain interfaith stability. This study examines how local cultural practices, particularly the Ogoh-ogoh tradition, function as a form of cultural agency that shapes interreligious dynamics in a postcolonial setting. Employing a qualitative approach with an ethnographic orientation, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and fieldnotes in Sekaran and Bedali villages, Kediri Regency. The findings reveal that Ogoh-ogoh operates not only as a Hindu religious celebration but also as a shared public arena that enables interfaith encounters and repeated cooperative practices involving Muslim residents. This participation goes beyond passive tolerance, demonstrating a shift from co-existence toward pro-existence, where the majority community actively supports the minority’s religious expression and public visibility. The study further shows that tradition serves as a mechanism of vernacular governance by strengthening social integration, reproducing inclusive values across generations, and mitigating potential tensions through locally embedded social capital. The article contributes a cultural agency–based transition model that explains how interfaith relations can move from recognition and non-interference to active solidarity and collaborative engagement. This model offers a grounded theoretical contribution to postcolonial interfaith studies and provides empirical insight into how local communities in Indonesia maintain inclusive public spheres through lived cultural practices.

Abstract

In a world that is constantly being shaped by armed conflicts and geopolitical instability, there is an increasingly urgent need for a legal framework that can support global peace. The United Nations (UN) Charter has long formed the basis of international law, promoting peace and preventing aggression. However, its effectiveness is often hindered by various structural limitations, such as power imbalances and weak enforcement of sanctions. Against this backdrop, maqāṣid al-syarī‘ah, the core of Islamic legal theory, can make a significant contribution as both an ethical-religious instrument for Muslims and a universal paradigm to reinforce the spirit and structure of the UN Charter. This article aims to construct an Islamic legal framework for global peace by taking an integrative approach to maqāṣid al-syarī‘ah and the principles of international law set out in the UN Charter. It will be compared with classical and contemporary fiqh siyasah. A normative-comparative methodology is employed, analysing primary sources such as the works of Ali Haidar and Yusuf al-Qaradawi, alongside case studies of global conflicts in various regions, including Palestine–Israel, Syria, Ukraine, and Yemen. The results of the study show that maqāṣid al-sharīʿah, with its core values of hifẓ al-nafs (protection of life), al-ʿadl (justice), and al-silm (peace), aligns with the principles of the UN Charter and can provide an ethical and spiritual dimension largely absent from modern international law. Unlike fiqh siyasah, the UN Charter prioritizes formal legality, whereas Islamic law emphasizes moral legitimacy and substantive justice. The article concludes that integrating maqāṣid al-syarī‘ah into global peace law discourse could enrich global civilisation with a more humane, inclusive and transnational approach.

Abstract

This study examines the epistemological tension between devisionism and decolonial thought in contemporary Qur’anic studies. Revisionism emphasizes the historical-critical examination of the Qur’an as a human artifact, while decolonialism highlights the importance of epistemic autonomy grounded in both spiritual authority and rationality. The study employs a qualitative-descriptive approach with a comparative analysis of key scholars such as Patricia Crone, Michael Cook, and Joseph Lumbard, etc. The findings reveal a significant gap in the previous literature, as both paradigms have often been studied separately without efforts toward synthesis. Through theoretical analysis, this article proposes an integrative-critical tafsir model that combines the methodological precision of Western philology with the spiritual and ethical awareness of Islamic epistemology. By restoring Muslim epistemic agency while maintaining academic rigor, this framework provides a transformative middle ground for relevant Islamic scholarship. The case study of surah Al-Baqarah verse 144, concerning the change of the qiblah, is used to demonstrate how historical accuracy can coexist with spiritual meaning. This research affirms that integrative-critical interpretation offers a new epistemological framework for Qur’anic studies one that is both scientifically grounded and spiritually rooted bridging Western rationality and Islamic revelation, while guiding scholars to navigate the intersection of history, revelation, and wisdom through a more epistemically comprehensive interpretive methodology.

Abstract

This article examines the historical development and contemporary transformation of Qur’anic reading methods in Indonesia, focusing on the shift from traditional pesantren-based transmission to diversified and institutionalized pedagogical systems. Drawing on a qualitative design that combines a systematic literature review and document analysis, this study analyzes 86 primary and secondary sources selected through the PRISMA framework. The analysis traces major phases of pedagogical change, from oral-based methods such as Baghdadiyah and Yasiniyah to modern approaches including Qiraati, Iqra’, Yanbu’a, An-Nahdliyah, and Tartil. The findings reveal that Qur’anic pedagogy in Indonesia has evolved through processes of systematization, standardization, and mass dissemination while maintaining continuity with classical tajwid and sanad traditions. This development reflects broader postcolonial dynamics marked by nation-building, educational modernization, and intensified engagement with global Islamic networks. The study further shows that the emergence of at least 271 methods by 2022 illustrates sustained pedagogical creativity and pluralization of religious authority. Overall, the evolution of Qur’anic reading methods represents a dynamic dialectic between preservation of religious authenticity and adaptation to contemporary educational demands, reshaping patterns of literacy, authority, and piety in Indonesian Muslim society.

Abstract

This study critically examines the implementation of the Living Qur’an method in student research at the Qur’anic Studies and Tafsir Programme of IAIN Kediri. It addresses a persistent methodological problem, namely the tendency of student research to adopt descriptive-phenomenological approaches without sufficient integration with textual analysis, exegetical traditions, and the framework of ʿUlūm al-Qur’ān. Using a qualitative case study design, data were collected from thirteen undergraduate theses employing the Living Qur’an approach, in-depth interviews with supervisors, and institutional curriculum and academic guideline documents. Data were analysed through an interactive model focusing on text–phenomenon correlation, depth of tafsir engagement, and normative–contextual integration. The findings reveal that most student research positions the Living Qur’an primarily as a sociological-descriptive approach, resulting in weak analytical connections between religious practices, Qur’anic texts, and interpretive traditions. Only a small proportion of studies demonstrate systematic integration of field data with exegetical analysis and relevant tafsir literature. These results indicate the absence of clear operational methodological standards in student-based Living Qur’an research. This study contributes by formulating practical methodological indicators and reaffirming the disciplinary position of the Living Qur’an within Qur’anic sciences and tafsir studies. It is expected to serve as a foundation for improving research quality in Islamic higher education institutions.
