Abstract

ABSTRACT The researcher aims to investigate whether the Digital Fairy Tale Book effective in teaching reading comprehension. Theories used to support this research are from Patel and Jain (2008) about the audio visual media and reading. Audio visual media involves more than one sensory organs of the learner which improves retentiveness and makes learning permanent also seeing and hearing go together which play ordinary roles in learning. Meanwhile, reading is very important for the teacher to carry out, to know, and to check the students’ pronunciation, information, stress, paused, and rhythm and their ability in various short of punctuation marks. The researchers used experimental research of method, and took two classes consisting of 30 students each class as sample in SMP Al Washliyah Sumber. The data for this experimental study were students’ reading scores, and the reading scores were analyzed of using McMillan and Schumacher’s formula. The research found that the reading scores of the experimental group is higher than the control group. The result of t account is 0.75, t table is 1,672 for α = 5% it means that t account is higher than t table (t account > t table). Therefore, the conclusion is Digital Fairy Tale Book is effective in teaching reading comprehension. It makes the students enthusiastic to learn the fairy tale text and help them produce correct intonation or tunes and notice how English is spoken differently from the way they are written and listen very well. It is suggested to use of Digital Fairy Tale Book in Teaching Reading as an alternative media in order to students’ ability in Reading Aloud other genres of texts or to improve students’ listening skill. Keywords : Digital Fairy Tale Talking Book, Reading Aloud, Fairy Tale Text

Abstract

This paper aims to give a critical analysis on the two prevailing notions introduced by Gardner and associates, Integrative Orientation and Instrumental Orientation, in today’s ELT researches. Dörnyei and associates argued that integrative and instrumental orientations are unable to capture learners’ fluctuations and complexity of motivation as the result of many factors from within learners and outside learners, who are also social beings in their respective environments. The two orientations also trigger misinterpretations among researchers as they are often used interchangeably with motivations while they are two very different concepts. Furthermore, the growing prominence of Global English perspective, which does not see L1 speakers of English as the standards of “correctness” and “good English” also contributes to growing irrelevance of the integrative orientation notion among researchers. Based on the critical analysis, it is suggested that researchers focus on qualitative approaches in investigating English learners’ motivation as the acknowledgement of its complexity and to limit greed to oversimplify and generalize motivation of learners, who are also social beings with all the complexity and dynamics. Abstract

AbstractThere has been increasing interest in the use of peer and self-assessment for learners in universities. Such interest is mostly due to the awareness of the significant importance of the two kind of assessments toward students’ learning outcomes. Educators suggest that peer and self-assessment could encourage learners to be more responsible and reflective. This paper will investigate the definition of peer and self-assessment, evidences that could justify the effectiveness of peer and self-assessment, and  some numbers of principles of effective practice in the use of peer and self-assessment.

Abstract

One of competences which teachers should possess is strategic competence. In the classes of English Language Teaching (ELT), teachers must be able to communicate either verbally or non-verbally with students to stimulate them to learn English effectively. This paper attempts to shed some light on language varieties used by English teachers in English to Young Leaners (EYL) classes. The language variation investigated is specified into the way how teachers give instruction, according to Holmes (1993), which is grouped into three categories: descriptive sentences, imperative sentences and interrogative sentences. On the ground of doing this study, two EYL teachers were involved. Since this research employs qualitative research design, the data for this study were gained through direct observation and teacher reflective notes. The study revealed that imperative sentences dominate the expressions used by teachers in EYL classes followed by questions and declarative sentences. Total Physical Response (TPR) is still assumed to be the most effective way to teach English to young learners.

Abstract

Teachers must be able to cooperate with their students in the class to make the teaching and learning activities enjoyable. A good teacher has to use appropriate strategies to make his or her students fluent readers. Teachers also have to make students feel comfortable so that they can achieve the objective of the teaching and learning activities. Responding to the problems and considering the factors causing them, the researcher taught that the best way to improve the students' reading ability is through group work. Group work is a group of students who work together. Students in group can share, compare, and contrast ideas and thoughts. Group work enables students to study more because they learn together in an enjoyable way. Students will be motivated to study because working in group makes them help each other, especially when facing difficulties in reading. Students can get the meaning of some vocabularies and the content of the text easily. This research showed that group work can improve students' reading ability and motivation.

Abstract

In this paper the writer tries to analyze the motor vehicle advertisement texts from pragmatics point of view through classifying and describing the speech act types. Since this research is a qualitative, the writer uses descriptive method with speech act theory of pragmatics from Cutting and Yule. The writer collects the data from www.adsoftheworld.com, www.adslogans.co.uk and www.textart.ru, March 18th 2014. In analyzing data, the writer classified the data into table list. The classification is divided into speech act types and speech act levels, they are locutionary act as the ad texts and illocutionary act as the advertisers intention behind.  At the end of the research is found that related to the purpose of the ad in conveying its audience, there are representative and directive of speech act types. Representative are those kinds of speech act that state what the speaker believes to be the case or not and directive those kinds of speech acts that the speakers use to get someone else to do something. Therefore, the research hopefully brings about more comprehension on the motor vehicle advertisements which are often found in motor vehicle advertisements texts.
