Abstract

Royyan Julian’s short story entitled “Di Malam Bulan Darah, Mogut Menyantap Jenazah Orang Kafir” [On the Night of the Blood Moon, Mogut Eats the Body of Infidel] (2019) captures the relationship among different ethnic groups, religions and gender in Madura. Set in Madura Island, the story uncovers more than just relation between Chinese and Madurese people and between female and male characters. This paper is focusing on inter-ethnic and inter-religion relation in the short story. This analysis used qualitative method and data collection used close-reading. Drawing theoretical inspiration from Simone de Beauvoir with a particular emphasis on the Other and Richard Jenkins’ theory on Social Identity, this study reveals how different identities bring different treatment, evaluation, and prejudice which led to othering. Through his short story, Royyan Julian discloses binary opposition related to ethnicities, religions, and gender. The hierarchy and power imbalance imposed on male and female characters in the story bring devastated impact on female character just because she has different identity from the majority of Muslims in Madura.

Violence against women through narratives and scenes becomes one of the interesting discussions, especially in the novel adapted into the film Seperti Dendam, Rindu Harus Dibayar Tuntas. This research aims to uncover the representation of violence against women in the adaptation process from novel to film. This research is qualitative with a descriptive method. The approach used in this research is to look at the narrative aspects of the novel, relationships, and correlations of violence against women. Violence against women in film uses the concepts of cinematography, vehicle transfer, and narrative, in building visuals of violence against women. The results of this study show the representation of violence against women through Iteung and Rona Merah. Iteung shows the relationship between her childhood and the formation of masculine character in adolescence. This also shows the ecranisation in the form of reduction in the film. Rona Merah provides an image as an object of sexual violence who experiences psychological disorders as a form of trauma in the past. New media other than film are the caricatures on the tailgate of a truck, which are closely related to the problems of men and women.

Abstract

Subtitles on YouTube are automatically machine-translated and sometimes the translations are difficult to understand. One of the applications is done on BTS song lyrics. The purpose of this study is to compare the application of techniques as well as the tendency of English-Arabic and English-Indonesian translation methods and ideologies in BTS song lyrics. This research is a descriptive qualitative research. The translation theories underlying this research are translation techniques, methods, and ideologies. The data in this study are clauses or sentences in the lyrics of BTS songs and their translations in Arabic and Indonesian. The data collection technique was done by listening and noting. The data were analyzed by combining two analysis models, namely interactive (Miles and Huberman) and ethnographic (Spradley) models. The results of this study show that the dominant application of translation techniques in English-Arabic translation is the established equivalent technique, while in English-Indonesian translation it is the literal technique. Meanwhile, the English-Arabic translation method is target language-oriented, while the English-Indonesian translation method is source language-oriented. This affects the domestication ideology orientation in English-Arabic translation and the foreignization ideology orientation in English-Indonesian translation.

Abstract

The popularity of the digital literary platform Wattpad has been recognized globally, including in Indonesia and Libya. Among various studies on fiction published through Wattpad, this research focuses on a comparative analysis of romance formulas written by popular Wattpad authors from two countries: La'nat al-'Ishq by Hams Yosef in Libya and Abighea by Chelsea Karina Aelia in Indonesia. The main issue addressed in this study is whether romance stories in digital fiction from these countries share the same narrative formula despite the cultural differences between the authors and their readers. The comparison is conducted using John G. Cawelti’s theory of formulaic literature and a descriptive-analytical method. The findings indicate that the dominant formulas in both fictions are the idealization of the main characters, love triangles, and happy endings. This suggests that, although these works are set in different cultural and linguistic contexts, their romance formulas reflect universal desires and expectations of young readers concerning the romance genre.

Abstract

This article examines Nahj al-Burdah, a work by the Saudi Arabian poet 'Abd al-Ḥamīd ibn Aḥmad al-Khaṭīb (d. 1381 H). This article aims to discuss the literary aspects based on Ahmad Amin's concept. This concept includes analysis of emotions, meaning, imagination, and stylistics. According to Amin, the stylistics includes aspects of rhythm and rhyme. The analysis results show that this madḥ al-Nabī work has a distinctive characteristic: expressing love for Allah SWT before expressing love for Prophet Muhammad Saw. This madḥ of the Prophet contains eleven themes, including the poet's nostalgia, good news for the soul, repentance, surrender, and hope, praise for the Prophet, the birth of the Prophet, the miracles of the Prophet, the glory of the Qur'an, struggles in jihad, the Isrā' and Mi'rāj, seeking forgiveness from Allah, and al-munājāh. The emotional expressions of love in the poem include feelings of love, fear, regret, satisfaction, and submission to Allah SWT. The imagination that emerges in this poem focuses on visualizing the depiction of angels delivering revelation to the Prophet. The language style used by the poet includes tasybīh, majāz, and kināyah. The poet chooses the rhythm of baḥr basīṭ and the rhyme of mīm.

Abstract

This research aims to examine how interpreters translate conceptual metaphors in President Joko Widodo's speech during the 2022 G20 Summit meeting in Bali. This research used the basic conceptual metaphor theory of Lakoff and Johnson (1980) and the metaphor translation theory by Broeck (1981) in its analysis. This research is descriptive research with a qualitative approach. The data source in this research was taken from President Joko Widodo's speech at the G20 Summit in Bali, which KOMPASTV uploaded. This research has three stages: data provision stage, data analysis stage, and data analysis results presentation stage. The researcher found 76 conceptual metaphor data from the study in President Joko Widodo's speech at the 2022 G20 Summit meeting. Of the 76 conceptual metaphors found, there are 53 (69.7%) metaphors translated with the same imagery, 13 (17.1%) metaphors translated with different imagery, and 10 (13.2 %) metaphors had their imagery removed. Most of the metaphors in this speech were translated while maintaining ST's original image (69.7%).
