Abstract

The aim of this paper is to describe the relationship between the language and the culture on sociolinguistic perspective. As a perspective, its framework is based on several factors, which is outside of the language itself. It has something to do with the society. The social reality becomes very critical to understand the meaning itself. With this perspective, theories, which have described the relationship between the culture and the language, can be divided into two categories, namely the subordinate relationship and the coordinate relationship theories. The first relationship correlates with the view that the culture is the main system whereas the language is the subsystem. The second kind of the relationship or the coordinative relationship is based on the understanding that the language and the culture are two different systems, which are adopted by human being. The culture is the ruling system of the human interaction, while the language is the system with its function as the mean of carrying the continuity of that interaction.

Abstract

One of the complex problems in Arabic semantics is the dichotomy of haqiqah and majāz (proper speech vs. figurative speech). This research aims to study the problem in Mu’tazili school, an Islamic school of speculative theology that flourished in the cities of Basra and Baghdad, both in present-day Iraq, during the 8th–10th centuries. The perspective of this school, which absolutized the unity and oneness of God, brought a consequence that Allah is ontologically different and categorically distinct from nature, humans, and material causality and the Qadīm (the Eternal). Any other than Allah, then, is transient or created, including Allah’s kalām or words. From this perspective, Mu’tazili school built their linguistics foundation, including lafadz and its meaning as well as the theory of philosophic dichotomy and majāz. The notion of majāz has been used to overcome the problems of interpretation of Qur’anic verses, which was categorized as mutasyābihāt, known only by Allah. In other words, besides its critical views, majāz, by Mu’tazili school, was a meaning producer of a text, especially the sacred one. This was in accordance their theological point of view, which was also their world of view or ru’yah kauniyah.

Abstract

The novel ‘Azrā`Jākartā, written by Najīb al-Kīlāniy, has its setting in Indonesia. The characters and the events of the novel are seen in its correspondence to the history of Indonesia in the 1960’s in many aspects. Those aspects are: 1) the presence of the communist ideology in Indonesia, 2) the Coupe d’tat or  the sudden overthrow of a government by a usually small group of persons —Comunist Party, which was previously in positions of authority, thirdly is that the Moslem as the victims of this clash of ideology. From this study, it can be clearly seen that the historical events of the novel is the part of its structure. Furthermore, it’s not merely coincidently taken for granted; instead it has its meaning.

Abstract

Humour functions as a critic, satire, irony or propaganda. By using humour, it is posible to say the truth elegantly and sofly, without disturbing others’ feeling. In pragmatic comunication theory, humour is created from deviations of comunication principles, e.g: Grice principle of comunication and Leech principle of comunication. This research uses the jokes on the former leader of Libyan Mu’ammar al-Qażāfi as the object material. Mu’ammar al-Qażāfi was the leader of controversy as well as he was a dictator. Then, there are assumptions that the humours about al-Qażāfi are not only about entertaiment but also about special aims. The researcher uses pragmatic analysis that covers Grice cooperative principle, Leech politeness principle and speech acts (illocutionary act). The results are that political humour in Libyan was a new kind of humour and it was developed while the revolution was on and in the aftermath. While Ilocutionart Acts, which are found in the humours about al-Qażāfi, are irony, claiming, ordering, complaining, and satiring. The aims in the humours are satire and irony.

Abstract

This study assumes that literary works are not neutral or value-free works. Poetry which is the main object of this article carries not only aesthetic values but also personal and social life values, either directly attributed consciously by the poet him/herself or by the audiences. Poetry is one of the main ways to express feeling and imagination among the Arabs since the era of jahiliy (the days of ignorance). Therefore, a poet was highly hallowed and respected like a priest, spokesman, tribal chief, or even prophet. This phenomenon reached its peak in the Abbasid period due to the caliphs’ support. One of the great poets in the Abbasid period was Al-Mutanabbi. This paper examines his poems with the purpose to explore their literary values as well as their various life values using a pragmatic approach. From this study, the writer discovers a number of values, such as intellectual, religious, social, patriotic or heroic, and philosophical, in addition to the poetic aesthetic values in his works. These values are not free from the dynamics of Al-Mutanabbi’s life and his association as a court poet, mainly of Saif al-Daulah’s.
