Abstract

This research aims to reveal the doxa generated by the Jakarta Arts Council (DKJ)  and its role as the institution with the legitimacy to build cultural construction, especially in the field of literature. This study uses the theory of genetic structuralism or also known as constructivist structuralism by Pierre Felix Bourdieu. This theory departs from the basic concept of the habitus and the arena, agency and structure as the principles that gave birth and developed the habits, producing habitus as well as perspectives. The results shows that the habitus and the perspective place the Jakarta Arts Council as doxa and as a guidelines for cultural practices in art programs, which is rooted on the structure of culture that is constructed through symbolic violence toward the involved agents and is socialized in the field of culture through similarly of symbolic violence.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze a poem from linguistic framework. This is a library research, using qualitative data, documentary study, description, deconstruction and content analysis method. An intrinsic-objective approach is also employed in this research. The analysis commences from lexicogrammar which produces automatized pattern and non-automatized one. The automatized pattern produces the subject matter while the non-automatized pattern yields the first order of meaning. In addition, the first order of meaning serves as symbols to generate the second order of meaning or literary meaning. Finally, the literary meaning navigates us to generalize the deepest meaning of the poem. The research result proves that the subject matter of the poem is ‘the prostitute took the man and the hermit to the indecent swamp and killed them in the morning’. The first order of meaning of this poem refers to the clause six to ten. The literary meaning is ‘in immoral, wicked, and evil places, people do not believe in God anymore’. They do anything to get their ambition-such as wealth, rank, and women. Even, they are proud of their wealth, rank, and of showing their lust. Eventually, the deepest meaning of the poem is about ‘the moral degradation’.

Abstract

This article aims to study the development of Arabic poetry from its early phase to its modern one. Having used a historical-diachronic study of form and content of Arabic poetry, this article concludes that Arabic poetry, as the oldest genre in the Arabic literary tradition, has hardly developed. Not until  the 20th century, more commonly known in the history of Arabic literature as As}r al-Nahd}ah, that the awareness of the absence of creativity in Arabic poetry and external factors due to the interaction of Arab with the West have given birth the seeds of modern Arabic poetry. At least, there are five schools of modern Arabic poetry, namely: Neo Classical (al-Muhāfizun) with such its central figures as Mahmud Sami and Ahmad al-Barudi Syauqy; Western Romanticism, which was pioneered by Khalil Mutran; Madrasah Dīwān, which was propagandized by Abd al-Rahman Shukri, Abbas Mahmud al-'Aqad, and Ibrahim Abd al-Qadir al-Mazini; Madrasah Apollo, which was carried by Ahmad Zaki Abu Syadi; and Madrasah al-Muhajir, which is pioneered by Jibran Khalil Jibran. Each has contributed their part in Arabic poetry formally as well as contentially. Those schools have became a tradition of modern Arabic poetry. The emergence of modern Arabic poetic tradition has been accompanied by three general pattern-  the influence of literary patterns of the more advanced cultures, the escapism, and the search for identity.

Based on the analysis and discussion, it is found that the terms ulū al-albāb, ulū al-‘ilm, ulu an-nuhā, and ulū al-abṣār are translated in various ways. Ulū al-albāb and ulū an-nuha are translated quite accurately, ulū al-‘ilm accurately, and ulū al-abṣār rather inaccurately. The levels of accuracy are influenced by the translation techniques that is used, cultural differences, and inaccuracy in understanding the lexical meanings. The four terms describe the semantic relations from the most specific to the most general, namely ulū al-albāb, ulū al-nuhā, ulū al-abṣār, and ulū al-‘ilm respectively.

Abstract

The study aims at describing linguistic categories and expressions of traditional Sasak farmers in Lombok Island based on their social and cultural context. Qualitative method is employed in this research. The data are analyzed using componential analysis. The analysis tries to describe the lexicons and linguistic expressions on agricultural domain. The findings show that the agricultural sphere always raises the terms of the linguistic expressions/categories. Linguistic expressions form the verb and noun categories. The order of classification or the categorization of the linguistic expressions–both for the nouns and verbs– was based on the sequence of farming activities and the results obtained. Therefore, the existing categorization is based on the generic meaning components adjusted to the process and outcome—verbs and nouns—in the domain.

Abstract

This paper aims to investigate Arabic word classificati based on Arabic Grammarians and modern linguists’ perspectives and principles which they use in that classification. As it is explored by Arabic Grammarians, the word classification is divided into three components, such as ism (noun), fi'l (verb) and harf (particle) ,which causes problems when between definition and sign of each of the classification is unmatched in a given text. Therefore, some modern linguists, one of them is Tamām Hassān, try to reconsider and to remake a new classification of Arabic words. While other Arabic Grammarians only use the six principles of classification (such as distribution principle, substitution principle, function principle, morpheme principle, meaning principle and predicative principle), Tamām Hassān uses two additional principles, those are: the form principle (al-mabnā) and the meaning principle (alma'nā). and the conclusion of is that Arabic word is divided to seven such as ism (noun), sifah (adjective), fi'l (verb), damīr (pronoun),  arf (adverb), khalīfah (exclamation) and adāh.

Abstract

When the literary world enters the realm of scientific study, the arbitrariness and the infinity of expression, which is the main characteristic of literary work, should be evaluated based on an objective standard of science. Balagah, a literary theory born and developed in Arab, has also undergone a process of standardization of concepts and theories as other sciences. This paper describes the history of balagah from embryonic phase until it has been structured to be a science with a set of scientific theories. A historical approach is expected to be able to reveal historical facts related to the codification of balagah since the beginning of its existence until its latest development. The systematization and theorization of balagah had been done since there was a trend of translations of Greek philosophy into Arabic. The demand of scientific knowledge in Greek tradition greatly endorsed the theorizing of balagah. Standardization of the theory of balagah positively facilitates learners to understand the science of balagah and  to have scientific accountability. However, the systematization of balagah has led this study to a static condition. In addition, the orientation of balagah is more in linguistic (syntax) area.Simak
