Abstract

This work investigates needs of informal dialect (`ammiyyah) in teaching Arabic in Indonesia, especially for tourism industry. The study is based on needs analysis, focusing on necessities and lacks by Waters (1987). By observation, the result shows that both of formal dialect (MSA) and informal dialect are necessary to learn in Arabic for tourism purposes (ASP), by special attention to Gulf Arabic and Egyptian Arabic. In other side, some of lacks is found which include non-language factors, such as education rules, subjects needed, and language factors, such as usage area. However, as long as the aim to be able to communicate in Arabic is reached, both of formal and informal dialects are though.

Abstract

Cosmic nouns in Javanese language are a group of nouns, which refers to astronomic and geographic notion. This research aims at describing its morphologic and syntactic characteristics. This research uses distributional and equivalent method. The data is collected from everyday use of language as well as its variety of the language, literature, and dictionary. The astronomic nouns refer to "sun", "moon", and "star". The geographic nouns refer to ‘location’ and ‘direction’. Morphologically, cosmic nouns can be in the form of simple noun or complex noun from affixation. Some can be reduplicated while others can’t. Some demonstrative and negation of Javanese language can be jointed with cosmic nouns. Syntactically, cosmic nouns can be in phrasal form. The dominant phrasal form, which emerges, has endocentric relation – having center form which is clarified by peripheral form. Based on its references, astronomic and geographic nouns are categorized into specific and general noun. The complexity of cosmic noun is bound to the number as well as distance of the referent noun. The result of this research shows that cosmic nouns have its unique characteristics compared to other nouns.

Abstract

This research aims at scrutinizing two novels, Palawidja by Karim Halim dan Kembang Jepun by Remy Sylado, by using the theory of literary sosiology to observe the point of views of each authors. Obviosly, they have different pictures on the situation in Indonesia during the Japanese occupation.  Remy Sylado, who wrote  after the Japanese occupation,  gives a more objective picture in his novels than Karim Halim, who live and wrote novels during the Japanese occupation, does. Palawidja is biased due to the fact that Karim Halim worked for Balai Pustaka, a publishing company under the control of the Japanese authority. Therefore, he supported the Japanese propaganda and could not give an objective picture of the condition in Indonesia at the time.

Abstract

Literary appreciation to the Koran becomes a fundamental idea in this study. Literary appreciation is used, because the Koran is a glorious Arabic literary bible which is strongly believed in its perfection and beauty. The object of this paradigm is not the unwritten words of Allah, but that of Allah that have been recorded in Arabic media, written in musha and communicated by human being. The main goals of this study are analyzing qasas al-Qur’ān from the aspect of principal structuralism and narrative theory. Analyzing qasas al-Qur’ān from this view is in harmony with tartīb al-āyāt theory and unity story theory by surah of Khalafullāh, and Qusb narration of classification. This analysis proposes three classifications of qasas al-Qur’ān and they are different from, for example, Manna’ al-Qassān, Mussafā Sulaimān, Khalafullāh, yet they share something in common with classification of Qasb. These classifications are: the first is one narration in one surah, the second is the collection of short narrations in a sequence of the surah, and the third is the collection of short narration in non-sequence of surah. These classifications become in harmony with the Koranic order, which collects its verses in one surah, in stead of collecting themes from various surah.

Abstract

Bilingual or multilingual speakers are often code-switch from one language to another, especially when two or more languages are used in the environment. This article explores the potential theoretical explanations for this language behavior and the role of language dominance in the direction of switch. The data consists of primary and secondary data. The primary data were collected from daily speech events in the various domains. The secondary data is any information other than the primary data which support the primary data. In short, code-switching follows the functional and the grammatical principles and is a complex, rule-governed phenomenon. The use of Buginese language (BDS), Malayic-Buginese language (DMB), and Indonesian language (BI) have led to the functional elaboration of all language beside Konjo language (BK) in the Konjo speech community in Sinjai. There are some factors governing the code-switching process in the Konjo speech community in Sinjai. They are: (1) the language abilities of the speaker and the addressee, (2) the setting and the situation, both official and non-official, (3) the participants in the interaction, and (4) the aim of the speech act.

Abstract

This article examines the translation of Arabic tenses expression into Indonesian. This library research employs a descriptive analysis method based on Catford’s theoretical translation framework. This study finds that, firstly, from the extension of translation perspective, the tense expression in Arabic can be translated fully into Indonesian, in which all of the Arabic tense expression has the Indonesian equivalence. Linguistically speaking, in certain cases the translation of Arabic verbs both mādī (perfect) and mudāri’ (imperfect) has to be added with an Indonesian temporal adverb.  The auxiliary verb kāna, which usually combined with mudāri’ verb in Arabic past tense is translated into Indonesian adverb of time: “dulu”, “dahulu”, or “tadi”. Secondly, the expression of Arabic future tense, which constitutes mudāri’ verb, prefix “sa_” or particle “saufa,” is also translated into “akan”. The mādī (perfect) verb, which is used in the context of wishing, is translated into Indonesian equivalence verb - “semoga”. Thirdly, In translating Arabic into Indonesian, context (siyāq) comes into play, not all Arabic verbs denotes definite tense in a sentence

Abstract

To achieve the goal of using language, the speaker of a language is structuring the linguistic construction as effective as possible. Moreover, he is able to modify the linguistic construction based on the prominence of the information. By so doing, language will meet its function, serving as the tool of delivering message to the interlocutor. However, there are many ways to mark the important information, such as supra-segmental, morphological, and syntactic ways. Syntactic marking of information packaging is called syntactic choice. Thus, this paper aims at describing the ways to package important information in English as one of widely spoken languages worldwide. This study belongs to descriptive qualitative study. The data were taken from realiable sources, written or spoken by native speakers. From the analysis, it is evident that English has several ways of structuring prominent information and resulting in some noncanonical constructions, namely topicalization, dislocation, cleft, existential, and so forth.
