Abstract

The gap between the potential of educational technology tools and students' achievement of critical thinking skills in practice prompted this study. This study aimed to analyze the mechanisms of influence of educational technology tools on students' critical thinking skills, taking into account differences in individual characteristics and learning environments, and to formulate a tiered implementation strategy. The study used a mixed-methods approach combining quasi-experiments, learning behavior log analysis, and case studies. Participants included students from various educational levels. Data collection instruments included an adapted Critical Thinking Assessment Scale, a Digital Literacy Questionnaire, and a tool usage recording system. The data were analyzed quantitatively using ANCOVA and regression analysis, and qualitatively using thematic analysis. The results revealed that: (1) Tool efficacy showed significant differences based on educational level, with visual tools being effective for elementary school students (ES=0.45) while debate platforms were more suitable for secondary school students; (2) Digital literacy and technology anxiety moderated the effect of tool use, with the high-anxiety group showing a 23% decrease in usage duration; (3) Accessibility of resources and teacher support are key environmental variables, where students in remote areas experience a "tool usage gap". This study emphasizes differentiation, dynamization, and emotionalization in educational technology to enhance critical thinking in adaptive and effective ways.

Abstract

Mathematical problem-solving is a fundamental competence for civil engineering students, as it underpins their ability to analyze and address engineering-related challenges. However, current instructional practices in higher education remain largely procedural and insufficiently integrate digital technologies and meaningful contexts, making it difficult for students to connect abstract mathematical concepts with real-world engineering applications. This condition often leads to low engagement and limited development of critical thinking skills. This study aims to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of an Ethno-STEAM-based digital mathematics learning model in enhancing students’ mathematical problem-solving abilities. A Research and Development (R&D) approach was employed using the Borg and Gall model adapted from Dick and Carey. The findings indicate significant improvements in analytical skills, understanding of integral concepts, engagement, and critical thinking. These results suggest that the Ethno-STEAM approach provides a more contextual, interactive, and relevant learning experience, while supporting the development of 21st-century competencies in engineering education.

Abstract

Low character development among elementary students indicates that IPAS learning has not yet integrated character values and local wisdom contextually. Instruction remains cognitively oriented, limiting the development of religious, social, and environmental awareness. This study aimed to develop a Tri Hita Karana based mobile learning application for fifth grade Natural and Social Sciences learning and to examine its feasibility, practicality, and effectiveness in enhancing students’ character. The study employed a research and development approach using the ADDIE model, which consisted of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation stages. The research subjects included content experts, media experts, fifth-grade teachers, and elementary school students. Data were collected through observations, interviews, questionnaires, and tests, and were analyzed using quantitative and qualitative descriptive techniques. The results showed that the developed Tri Hita Karana based mobile learning application was feasible and practical for use in Natural and Social Sciences learning. The application was able to present learning materials interactively and integrate the values of parahyangan, pawongan, and palemahan into each learning activity. The Tri Hita Karana–based mobile learning application was also found to be effective as an instructional medium oriented toward strengthening character education in elementary schools. This study demonstrated that incorporating Tri Hita Karana values into digital media could serve as a reference for developing local-wisdom-based instructional media and as a strategic alternative for teachers in enhancing interactive and character-oriented Natural and Social Sciences learning.

Abstract

21st-century education demands that learners possess critical, creative, and contextual thinking skills in relation to their socio-cultural environment. However, the results of the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) in 2022 show that Indonesia’s literacy achievements are still low, necessitating innovative learning strategies that are relevant to students’ real-life contexts. The epicenter of PISA-based education does not only focus on European countries or the United States, but can also use Bali’s local traditions as a basis for learning. Traditional megoak-goakan games can be used as one of the learning mediums. The purpose of this research is to describe and analyze the implementation of CTL based on traditional games as a contextual learning model in elementary schools. The research uses a qualitative approach within the framework of a case study, with subjects including teachers, students, and the school principal. Data were obtained thru observation, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model. The research results show that teachers have applied CTL principles such as constructivism, inquiry, and learning community, as well as integrating local values into the learning process. This integration makes students more active, critical, and possess a strong socio-spiritual character. This study concludes that the implementation of CTL based on Balinese local wisdom not only enhances students’ academic quality but also internalizes universal cultural and moral values that support the national character education vision.
