Abstract

We study a capacitated multi-period, multi-product inventory problem under a finite horizon. Our main goal is to understand the impacts of evolution of forecasts for demand streams for multiple products on inventory replenishment decisions. We provide an input modelling technique to model such complex inventory management problem and offer research questions for future investigations. Our main contribution is analysing a complex but very practical problem in inventory management for multiple products and multi-periods when demand streams are dependent of each other and forecasting the demand requires simulation and updating over the finite planning period.

Abstract

In this study we develop a goal programming model for scheduling the shifts of the residents in a Qatari hospital. The residents are assigned for on-call shifts during their training (called first resident), as well as working during the regular day shifts (called helper). Residents’ schedules must address several considerations like work rules and hospital coverage requirements of two different departments: Oncology and Hematology as well as fairness of the workload distribution. The problem has been formulated using goal programming and solved using CPLEX. We were able to solve problems of realistic size to optimality in a few seconds.

Abstract

Single inventory policy has been applied to entire types of drugs in hospitals, despite several different drug and demand characteristics. Shortages regularly occur, which may affect patients lives, especially when vital drugs are being administered to them. However, hospitals cannot store a large amount of every drug because of limited space and budget. The objective of this study was to develop a hospital inventory management system to minimise the total inventory costs, while maintaining patient safety levels. This study is concerned only with the medicines that have a high consumption value and took place in a large public hospital in Thailand. The most suitable policies are proposed for each drug category with the best performance obtained. The historical demand is classified by drug characteristics, consumption value and clinical importance, as well as the demand characteristics. We applied it and compared it with the current inventory policy (Min/Max), and inventory policies from previous studies, in order to investigate the most suitable inventory policy for each drug category and demand characteristic. The study found that a single inventory management system cannot be effectively applied for all medicines. This is because there are also categories of medicines characterised by their value and clinical importance. This is called the ABC/VEN classification. The inventory management in hospitals should be fitted to drug categories and demand characteristics, which are quite unique in the healthcare supply chain and are different from those applied to [KK1]general manufacturing. [KK1]I put this in to highlight the differences

Abstract

Coordination, collaboration, and cooperation are often used in business term to enhance productivity and performance, in this way the partnership with supplier and information integration always play an important role in supply chain. This study investigates the effect of Buyer-supplier partnership and information integration on supply chain performance. The study also elaborates the development of trust and guanxi between suppliers and buyers for better business environment in supply chains. This study uses structural equation modeling to analyze data collected from 218 Chinese manufacturing industries. The Buyer-supplier relationship significantly affects trust and guanxi, which subsequently influences two elements of information integration, namely, quality information and real-time information. We found that Buyer-supplier partnership and information integration have a significant effect on supply performance. Furthermore, we found that trust and guanxi are pivotal role in sustaining better relationship between supplier and business for long run and growth

Abstract

This paper proposes a dynamic assessment of the aviation fuel demand and matches its supply in terms of price and quantity. It presents a perspective view of the aviation industry in terms of its contribution to the economy, challenges, aviation fuel demand and growth of passenger and freight traffic.A questionnaire survey is carried outto identify the various factors affecting the aviation fuel demand. Factor analysis is used to pick out the significant factors. A multiple regression model is developed to estimate the aviation fuel demand with factors like GDP, situations of negative publicity, price of fuel, competition from premium rail journey, promotions on tourism, cost of air freight, technological development in aircraft type and operation.Test data suggests that air passenger traffic and price of fuel are the main significant factors affecting aviation fuel demand in India. The model was validated with real data for FY 2011-12 with satisfactory results. The paper contributes in terms of a dynamic construct for aviation fuel demand assessment in India with introduction of a publicity index and concludes that the factors affecting the aviation fuel demand will change from time to time.

Abstract

This study demonstrates forecasting practices in supply chain management (SCM) at various areas, particularly Pharmaceuticals, Retail, and FMCG. The authors depicts the scenario of forecasting practices based on secondary data and represents SCM role, demand management, collaborative coordination, etc. In addition to this, the study reveals the limitation and few practical solutions on forecasting to be useful in the organization. Consequently the author describes recommendation and proposes a model on forecast management model. Though this paper highlights case studies,however, it unlocks further frontiers for the prospective researchers as well as practitioners in order to apply forecasting techniques.

Abstract

The focus of this paper is on supply chain strategy formulation. A conceptual theory approach is used for investigating and identifying the relationship between multiple elements, dimensions, forces and factors that influence and affect the supply chain strategy formulation in Greenfield context, specific to the slate mining industry. The research study involved secondary data review and series of 20 qualitative interviews, followed by 2 group discussions, one with mining and transportation experts external to the supply chain and one group discussion with supply chain internal experts. Through critical analysis, a number of problems emerge and the process of addressing these problems, results in a new framework for evaluating the relationship between business and supply chain strategy, specific to Greenfield project and integration design context.

Abstract

Aflatoxins are naturally mycotoxins occurring found in human foods and animal feeds and are highly carcinogenic in many experimental studies. Agricultural produce like peanuts is prone to aflatoxins contamination, particularly during crop growth periods, harvesting, and drying. Aflatoxins contamination can cause by improper storage condition or pest infestation that favorable to growth of Aspergillus fungi. With certain preventive practices along the length of groundnut or peanut-based products chain can help to reduce the risks of aflatoxins contamination. The purpose of this study was to determine the attitude of the food hygiene practices and food safety of aflatoxins contamination among peanut-based products manufacturers. Face-to-face interviews were carried out using a semi-structured questionnaire with 44 manufacturers. Data was analyzed using mean score analysis and logistic regression. The total mean score analysis revealed that most of the manufacturers had general knowledge about aflatoxins contamination and food safety (2.695). Meanwhile, the total mean score for attitude showed a favorable attitude towards aflatoxins contamination and food safety (4.254) among the manufacturers. Most of the manufacturers follow food safety and hygiene practices towards aflatoxins contamination in producing peanut-based products (2.744). Results from logistic regression analysis indicated that knowledge (p=0.081), attitude (p=0.055), and employee training (p=0.099) have a significantly positive relationship towards hygiene practices and food safety among the manufacturers. There is a need for the manufactures to have proper and continuous training for their workers in ensuring basic principles of food safety and important rules of food handling in personal hygiene and sanitation are followed and be as part of their social responsibilities for serving the safe and quality of food products to consumers.
