Abstract

This study examines the deployment of green supply chain management (GSCM) in the Malaysian automotive industry. Proponents of GSCM suggest that as an advanced corporate environmental governance practice, GSCM is an important corporate strategy deployed for sustainability particularly in the automotive industry. However, little is understood about the deployment of GSCM within an automotive industry operating in a developing country like Malaysia. The present study addresses this literature gap by focusing on both the GSCM deployment procedures and practices within the Malaysian automotive industry. The study adopts a qualitative research methodology, with data collected through semi-structured interviews, observation and document reviews from a single automotive manufacturing case firm operating in Malaysia. Consistent with the literature, our findings suggest that the case firm uses a holistic and systemic approach to deploy GSCM practices. This holistic GSCM deployment approach involves a structured regulated procedureled method that directly supports systemic green practices.

Abstract

Globalization of markets has compelled the industries to adopt new strategies of business to sustain in competitive markets. Therefore, industries are adopting innovative methods for selection of supply chain partners. Criteria of supplier selection should be based on industry need and type of product. In this work philosophy of Kano model has been applied for classification of criteria into different sets. Fuzzification of Kano model overcomes the constraint of single response and allows respondent to express customer satisfaction feelings in form of multiple numeric values. In this work decision makers categorized thirty-six criteria in to different sets and Must Be criteria are identified for supplier selection process. Further, Step-wise Weight Assessment Ratio Analysis (SWARA) method and Range of Values (ROV) method has been applied for weight assignment of criteria and ranking of alternatives respectively. Researchers and industrial practitioners can apply this methodology to other industries by choosing a different set of criteria. Keywords Supplier Selection, Selection Criteria, SWARA, ROV, Fuzzy Kano Model, MCDM

Abstract

Abstract Performance evaluation and decision making application on natural rubber agro industry productivity improvement along its supply chain is a complex and uncertain processes which needs decision support system (DSS). The research objectives were threefold in nature, i.e. (1) analyze natural rubber supply chain decision-making models, (2) formulate performance measurement model by using sustainable balanced scorecard approach and (3) develop decision support system prototype using systems approach. The DSS model consisted of four sub-models, i.e. supply chain performance measurement using sustainable balanced scorecard approach and Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process (F-AHP); latex quality improvement strategy selection using F-AHP; prospective product selection using Exponential Comparison Technique; and supply chain performance improvement strategy selection using Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) analysis. The developed DSS was implemented and tested by using real cases at Indonesia natural rubber industries. This research gave promising result in improving the natural rubber industry supply chain management performance. Abstract

Green energy is becoming an important aspect for developed countries in the world toward energy security by reducing dependence on fuel import and enhancing better life quality by living in sustainable healthy environment. Issues regarding renewable energy production are source sustainability and reliability to ensure continuous production. Palm oil operation produces 80% varies type of waste and 20% oil palm products. Different range of physical and chemical of palm oil waste properties request different particular treatment and conversion energy method to optimize the desired bio product. Aim of this paper is to suggest the best Routing Model of Palm Oil Fibre Waste toward Gas Fuel Production Supply Chain Management based on evaluation of current Malaysia’s palm oil industry, practices in palm oil waste treatment and available energy conversation technologies. The framework is based on palm oil mill operation to utilise annually solid waste generated as source for stable annual biogas electricity production for grid. This paper highlight framework for the prospective researchers as well as practitioners to do further research to optimizes utilisation of palm oil waste for electricity production.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between green supply chain management practices towards environmental and operational performances among Malaysian manufacturing firms. The research design for this study employs quantitative method using survey questionnaires which was developed based on a thorough review of relevant literature on green practices. A total of 300 questionnaires were distributed randomly among the manufacturing firms in Malaysia. A total of 7 variables included in this study, comprising green purchasing, investment recovery, eco-design and packaging, reverse logistic, and cooperation with customers, manufacturing environmental and operational performance. This study will measure the impact between green supply chain management practices towards environmental and operational performance in Malaysian manufacturing industry.

Abstract

2015 wave a challenging year for Malaysia in terms of economic as well as international trade due to several factors inter alia plummeting of global crude oil prices, Ringgit depreciation and sluggish of Asian giants trading momentum suchlike Peoples Republic of China (MITI Annual Report, 2015). Nevertheless, Malaysia trade still managed to push beyond the gauge projected by World Bank and International Monetary Funds (IMF) which recorded 5% growth than expected 4.7%. Despite exceeding the projection by 0.3%, the actual trade level recorded slightly dropped compared to 2014, therefore it is a vital need for Malaysia to restructure the movement of export and import to ensure consistent performance in the future. This study analyses top 60 Malaysia trading partners worldwide by taking into consideration the economic as well as financial determinants of trade. Rather than just a clich linear regression, this study differs from others by segregating the top 60 partners into three level of segregation together with the prominent gravity model of trade to identify the superior and profitable trading partners categories Malaysia should focus with. Lastly, the augmented gravity model of static panel analysis results shows mixed findings in which Malaysia trade with different segregation level provides different patterns and determinants of trade.

Abstract

Do Malaysian consumers have fair knowledge about GST, is there a strong association between gender and spending patterns, and do demographic factors strongly influence level of spending among Malaysian consumers were issues addressed in this study. 730 respondents were selected and interviewed using a structured questionnaire a week after the implementation of GST. Study findings showed that Malaysian consumers do have fair knowledge about GST and will still give priority to accommodation, followed by groceries, food, transportation, clothing, communications/internet and entertainment. There were no strong association between gender and spending patterns. However, Age and work sectors appeared to significantly influence the pattern. Based on our Logistics Regression Analysis, we predict that people would not spend after GST is implemented, thus, the implementation of GST will not get its desired results. We proposed that the Ministry of Finance, among other measures, should consider adding more products/ services in zero-rated basket.

Abstract

This paper is focusing on the way forward for world port alliances. Many ports operators such as HPH, APMT and ODW own a few ports in the world. By looking at that development, small and medium port operators left alone in competing the in the competitive market. By comprehending the concept of alliances which is strongly used in many transport operators such as airline industry, it would rebrand the ports operators worldwide. The discussion on how the alliances should be materialised and the benefits of having these alliances are well structured in the paper. With the input form a port operator, it has identified the key areas alliances can capitalise and it would enhance the productivity and efficiency of the ports operations. With the global business expanding, world port alliances would be able to change and spur further development in the fast moving maritime business.

Abstract

Retail businesses have become more challenging owing to the external and internal forces due to the ever evolving nature of the environment. Various measures are being taken to address the need to manage cost. The supply chain factors must not be ignored as the entire link along the retail supply chain play vital roles. This article is an attempt at presenting an overview of the current situation of the retail environment particularly in the hypermarket sector and the forces affecting their business cost which include knowledge, forecasting, procurement, and sourcing. The paper concludes through literature review that recognizes risks associated with each force that could potentially determine the cost of business for the hypermarkets. As such, an empirical study is to follow this conceptual study to analyse the hypotheses developed and to significantly identify the factors and strategies that retailers could use to reduce the impact of supply chain disruptions to their overall cost.
