Abstract

This paper considers the problem of managing inventory and routing problems in a two-stage supply chain system under a Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI) policy. VMI is an inventory management policy in which the supplier assumes the responsibility of maintaining the inventory at the customers while ensuring that they will not run out of stock. The delivery times to the customers are no longer agreed in response to customers' orders; instead the supplier indicates when each delivery takes place. Under the VMI policy, the planning is proactive as it is based on the available information rather than reactive to customers' orders. Thus, in this research, we assumed that the demand at each customer is stationary and the warehouse is implementing a VMI. The objective of this research is to minimize the inventory and the transportation costs of the customers for a two-stage supply chain system. The problem is to identify the delivery quantities, delivery times and routes to the customers for the single-period deterministic inventory routing problem (SP-DIRP) system with finite time horizon. As a result, a linear mixed-integer program is established for the solutions of the SP-DIRP problem

Abstract

maintain competitiveness in the market, has assumed the necessity of risk management as the main pillar of modern banking in the institutes of monetary intermediation. Banks relied almost exclusively upon internal control system within business lines, supplemented by the audit function, to manage operational risk. Operational Risk Management encompasses the mechanisms, tools, policies, procedures and processes, including management oversight, to identify, assess, monitor, report, and control operational risk. The first step in the operational risk management process is to identify the hazard that is associated with risk to which the bank is exposed. Consequently, this article examines the relationship between internal control system and the hazard identification of operational risk in Malaysian conventional banks. Survey questionnaires were emailed to branch managers and assistant managers of 650 local commercial bank branches across Malaysia and 132 fully completed survey questionnaires were received. Besides, data was analyzed using multiple regressions. Importantly, the study found that Malaysian conventional banks have a good internal control system and hazard identification with a mean of 4.71 and 4.37 respectively. Moreover, there were mixed findings between the relationship of internal control system and hazard identification. Notably, the implementation of risk assessment, top management information and communication, branch information and communication and top management monitoring were found to have a significant result in the documentation of hazard identification and control decision, while implementation of risk assessment has a significant relationship with practice of hazard identification. It can be seen that top management monitoring is an important factor that influence documentation of hazard identification of operational risk in Malaysian local conventional banks.

Abstract

Industrialized building system has been introduced in Malaysia as an initiative to promote the construction sector. One of the systems that are in use IBS is blockwork system which is an evolution of the use of conventional brick. Making the block has several parts or processes that must be taken to produce the component. Planning the layout of a manufacturing industry should be implemented taking into account all needs ranging from suppliers of raw materials until the final product to be distributed to customers. Supply chain management definitions focused on the physical movement of goods, i.e. total flow of materials from suppliers to end customers. From this we see SCM can help for designing the plant layout design. Workflow in and out of the raw material suppliers and the final product to the customer and facility management is necessary to ensure that employees or machine operator can perform the work safely and comfortably. The result shows that key management approach, proper planning and organized is the key facilitate the workflow of managing the layout of the production equipment and support services that are the backbone of a manufacturing industry.

Abstract

Abstract Enhancing farm production through an application of sustainable agriculture innovation to the existing farm system is relevant to face the simultaneous challenge in achieving food security, land protection and soil fertility and improving the wellbeing of farmers especially in rural areas. The System of Rice Intensification (SRI) technique is one of the sustainable rice cultivation techniques that have been introduced with the aim of improving the lives of rural farmers in Malaysia. The study was carried out to examine the differences in the cost of operations, paddy production and profitability of farmers using SRI technique and farmers who use conventional technique. Cost and production analysis among farmers as rice producers are important to be highlighted because farmers are the main actor in rice industry supply chain. In order to improve rice industry supply chain, focus should be given to the farmers welfare. Profitability analysis using budget technique has been used in this study. The study found that SRI technique is very successful in increasing the productivity of rice production while reducing the cost of production thereby increasing the profitability of farmers. It is important to identify the economic benefits of using SRI technique as it will encourage the adoption of this technique among rural areas farmers. Abstract

This paper examines the level of existence of supply chain integration, which covers supplier integration, internal integration and customer integration. From the literature, the level of supply chain integration among Malaysian manufacturing firms has yet to be identified. This empirical research was conducted in firms that implement green supply chain management practices and are ISO 14001 certified. Results showed that manufacturing firms in Malaysia practiced a highly progressive level of supply chain integration. Between supplier integration, internal integration and customer integration, internal integration was the most adopted. These findings provided an evaluation on the current level of supply chain integration and therefore provided insights to the importance of supply chain integration in firms that implement green supply chain management practices. Abstract

The primary purpose of this study is to empirically examine the relationships between lean production and business performance in Malaysian manufacturing industries. Grounded by the Socio-technical System Theory and the Program Theory, this study formulates and examines a conceptual model that links socially-oriented lean production, technically-oriented lean production, operational performance and business performance. This study utilizes two hundred and five manufacturing companies, selected randomly from the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers Directory. The study measures senior production or lean managers perception of the lean production and the level of performances in their companies. This study applies structural equation modelling (SEM) method for data analysis using AMOS package. The result indicates that both socially-oriented lean production and technically-oriented lean production significantly contribute to the operational performance of the companies. The finding also suggests that operational performance partially mediates the relationship between lean production (both socially-oriented lean and technically-oriented lean) and business performance. The result also demonstrates a significant relationship between operational performance and business performance. This study presents empirical evidence in the field of management, particularly in the context of operations management. The findings would further enrich the existing knowledge in this field. Finally, this study would provide useful guidance for the managers to plan and maintain lean production in the organization as well as to generate new measures of lean production in order to enhance business performance at the company level.

Abstract

The aims of this paper are to investigate the process of Japanese small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) Halal food business toward exporting Halal food and to explore issues of the Japan Halal Industry that potentially interfere SMEs exporting Halal food. In this study, the researcher interviewed three SMEs with Japan Halal certification issued by Japanese Halal certification bodies, two Halal certification bodies recognized by foreign Halal certification bodies, two Halal consultants, two researchers who are familiar with Halal study and three Malaysian Muslim consumers who had visited and/or lived in Japan. By analysing the contents emerged from all the interviews, the findings show the following things. First, the SMEs follow a traditional model of internationalization; they focus on a domestic market first, accumulate experimental knowledge in the domestic market and then, move toward foreign markets. Second, 15 issues categorized into barriers to starting Halal food business, perceptions of Halal food business, Halal certification, consultation of Halal food business and Muslim market in Japan emerged. In light of the traditional model, it is assumed that the issues in Halal certification, consultation of Halal food business and Muslim market in Japan adversely influence SMEs accumulating experimental knowledge of Halal food business. Hence, those issues, possibly become potential obstacles to SMEs export development.

Abstract

The level of awareness of sustainable and green practices in construction projects in Malaysia is still unsatisfactory. Even though it is increasing, the response and progress rate should be made higher to meet global standards. Sustainability in construction brings uncountable benefits to the social, environmental and economic sectors. This type of construction approach should be taken seriously as 24% of the total carbon dioxide is produced from the construction industry in this country. The aim of this research is to promote a sustainable environment in the construction proximity. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to investigate the level of commitment contractors in the northern part of Malaysia have, with regards to sustainable and green construction practices. The level of collaboration between the government and private sector will also be investigated. To investigate the degree of appreciation, a general interview guide approach with qualitative analysis is utilized as it allows the collection of general information from the interviewees. There are a number of green building rating tools being developed by various organizations in Malaysia, however, for the purpose of this research, only the GBI will be considered during analysis. It is found that less than one percent of construction projects in Malaysia are certified as green and sustainable. It is therefore recommended that in future researches, a broader spectrum of respondents should be investigated. Keywords contractors, green construction, private sector, sustainability
