Abstract

Lean practices is not only a business philosophy but also a management tool which has recognised highly benefits to decrease costs, remove waste, increase productivity and improve quality and profit. Nowadays, lean practices are implemented in many manufacturing and services companies. Lean practices are implemented in order to minimize wastes while maximise the overall performances in an organisation. In service sector, lean practices are importance to ensure value added services can be delivered to customers. However, Malaysia automotive companies cannot compete with Japanese automotive companies in terms of their customer satisfaction. The purpose of this study is to compare the lean practice between Japanese and Malaysia automotive service centres. A total of 80 questionnaires out of 100 distributed questionnaires were responded and this represented as 80% of response rate. The Mann-Whitney test result shows that there were four out of five factors of lean practices have significant differences between Japanese and Malaysia automotive service centres, which are TPM, JIT, Kanban, and 5S. VSM has not significant difference between ownerships. In addition, TPM, JIT, Kanban, VSM and 5S were higher practices in Japanese companies against Malaysia companies. Many Malaysia companies are still in the journey of lean practices and they need recommendation guidance to compete with other long-term established companies. Based on the survey result, the significant differences are identified as weak points of Malaysia companies as an opportunity to improve. Moreover, the significance of this study can help researchers and industry players to improve lean practices in automotive service industry.

Abstract

Vendor managed inventory (VMI) is a management policy in which the supplier implements the responsibility of maintaining the inventory at the retailers while confirming that they will not run out of stock. Under the VMI policy, the supplier will take a responsibility for managing the retailers. Moreover, the delivery times to the retailers are no longer agreed in response to retailers' orders; instead the supplier indicates when each delivery takes place. Therefore, this study reviews the main papers on the single item related to deterministic inventory routing problem (DIRP). Under this approach, the delivery of order emphases with deterministic demand rates. The objective of the DIRP is to resolve a flow strategy that can minimizes operational cost and inventory holding costs without having a stock-out according to a planning schedule. In this study, we have also focused on the single-warehouse, multiple-retailer vendor managed inventory (SWMR-VMI) where all retailers face a deterministic and constant demand rate.

Abstract

Property theft especially vehicle theft is a major contribution of entire crime. Estimating the level of crime by depending solely on the total of vehicle theft cases recorded is insufficient in order to observe the direction of the problem itself. The aim of this paper is to construct a vehicle theft index based on multi-criteria decision method to analyse vehicle theft pattern in particular and property theft in general for 82 areas in peninsular Malaysia. As vehicle theft is the major part of property crime, it is influenced by other criteria such as unemployment, level of education, immigrant and drug which should be considered in the vehicle theft index construction. Hence, this study takes into account the diversity of intrinsic of information in the criteria by measuring the entropy or the degree of diverseness of the data as proxies of the relative importance of the criteria. Then a Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to the Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) was used to construct the vehicle theft index of 82 areas in peninsular Malaysia. The finding shows the top three areas in descending order are Kuala Lumpur, Petaling and Johor Bahru. The vehicle theft index constructed in this study can illustrate the actual direction of theft problem in Malaysia and the index construction process can be applied in other countries as well.

Abstract

Traditional procurement system has been critique due to inefficiency dealing with innovation and industry development. As the industry developed, modern and alternative procurement systems has been introduced such as Design and Built and Management fees. Malaysian National Housing Policy 2012 has focused on the implementation of industrialized building system (IBS) to transform the housing industry by improving its quality, more economical, speed to construct and less dependency on foreign labors. The success of these development will highly be depending on procurement system management. This paper explores the type of procurement system currently been used in the industry, the procurement system management and issues arise from the practice. The findings revealed that under the two most popular systems that are Traditional and Design and Built; there are no differences in terms of appointment of IBS Manufacturer where the IBS Manufacturer will be appointed late under the Main Contractor. Thus, it is hypothesized that the issues arise due to the practice of these 2 procurement system are almost similar which does not comprehend the need to cater innovation in the industry

Abstract

This research study aims at giving an overview of the emerging research field of Islamic insurance in a phase that is still under debate among Muslim nations. No doubt, Takaful (Islamic insurance) is growing rapidly but it is still behind conventional insurance. Most of the researches reveal the fact that general public is unaware about Takaful and Takaful awareness level is low among general public. Researchers and practitioners are trying to explore the crucial factors which creates Takaful awareness among general public. However, only few studies are available in Pakistan which formally documented the issue and explore different Takaful awareness factors among general public of Pakistan. Therefore, the ultimate objective of this study is to find out general factors which enhance Takaful awareness level among general public of Pakistan. To achieve this objective, three hypotheses are proposed concerning the relationship of Takaful awareness level and other Takaful awareness factors such as Educational Level of general public, Religious Orientation of general public and Takaful Distribution Channels. Primary data was collected from general public of Pakistan by using 5-point Likert scale. These hypotheses predicting a positive relationship between Takaful awareness level and awareness factors (i.e., educational level, religious orientation, distribution channels). However, religious orientation has higher impact as compared to Takaful distribution channels and educational level. Study found that these three factors are crucial to enhance Takaful awareness level among general public. Hence, this study is contributing in the body of knowledge by exploring the vital factors to enhance Takaful awareness level and tried to resolve the important issue of Takaful awareness by developing a framework. This study is more significant for practitioners to enhance Takaful awareness level by exercising these three factors among general public of Pakistan.

Abstract

Abstract: These research studies as analysis of factors influencing the decision to use the service by Thai Airways by use Nested Logit Model. By the objective was to study the composition and other factors that affect the decision of passenger for use to study the characteristic in services provided by the Thai Airline. This research has study to format of the options studied by the passenger's choice of decision making level variables as the result is a variable in the Nested Logit Model. Were determining relationship of each variable to consider when deciding of passenger. The data used in this study are primary data obtained from questionnaires collected from passengers using the airline's 400 number. The study indicated to factorss influence the decision to use Thai Airways factors include revenue objective factors journey. The factor in travel time is direct cost of passenger. Therefore Thai Airways Should to low costs and lower fares to suit the needs of passengers.

Abstract

The current maximum allowable overall length of bus for Malaysia is only 12.2 m. However, the government had gazetted the United Nations Regulation (UNR) 107 and due to be implemented in July 2017. The implementation of UNR107 among others will allow the use of bus for overall length more than 12.2 m.This study investigates the manoeuvrability of single rigid, 15-metre bus based on its rear swing out impact. The rear swing out impact assessment of longer bus (15-metre) was made by recording a video from a video camera mounted on the rear, pointing rearward of a single rigid, 12-metre bus during manoeuvre. The video camera view angle was set to represent the excessive 3 m of longer bus and any infrastructures that appeared in the view were identified as the possible impact. From the video recording, it was found that longer bus will have a minimal manoeuvrability issues on the road. However, modification may be needed specifically at tight intersection or small roundabout to allow a smooth manoeuvrability of longer bus.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to test and develop absorptive capacity as a moderator of the relationship between Government Business Support Service (GBSS) and SMEs Performance in Malaysia. A random sampling technique was used on 150 usable questionnaires and data was analysed by SPSS 19. Statistically, the results confirmed that financial and non-financial support by government positively related to SMEs Performance and there is an interaction of absorptive capacity as a moderator on GBSS and SMEs Performance.

Abstract

Preventive Maintenance (PM) is one of the key approaches towards realizing the goal of organization performance. Hence, it is extensively applied and become an important aspect in the manufacturing sectors. PM plays a pivotal role to avoid potential stoppages and disruptions of equipment from occurring in daily operations. PM utilizes total employee involvement in the maintenance activities to avoid potential disruptions, breakdowns, stoppages, and failures. Despite the sector contribution to the Malaysia economy for which the Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) makes up 95% of the total manufacturers, preventive maintenance practices remain relatively lacking. In the highly competitive manufacturing industries, the ability and reliability of equipment is very important in order to achieve desired manufacturing performance. However, empirical evidence on the potential impact of PM practices towards manufacturing performance remains limited and indecisive. For Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs), the extent of how organizational capability influences manufacturing performance is also inconclusive. Henceforth, this study aims to investigate potential relationships between PM practices and manufacturing performance moderated by organizational capability with a focus on Malaysian SMEs. The study is intended to put forward a new framework and hypotheses to examine the above mentioned relationships. The proposed framework includes PM team, PM strategy and planned maintenance as the independent determinants, while organizational capability serves as the moderating variable. At the other end, measurement for manufacturing performance comprises of innovation and financial factor is considered. Research direction and conclusion are then discussed at the end of the study.

Abstract

The Indonesian economy has recently been discouraging. There are more than forty millions Indonesian people living under the poverty line. With supply chains extending throughout microfinance institution, it can be expected to be one of the solution. Though microfinance institutions (MFIs) have different organizational formats, they have to deal with daily management issues. In order to understand the operational structure of different MFIs, this paper assesses their performance by using the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) from four different perspectives. The BSC provides the “balanced” and “integrative” financial and non-financial perspectives of a MFI such as internal business processes, growth and learning, financial and customer perspectives that are extremely important to create a sustainable MFI. This paper reports the results from in-depth interviews with 18 MFI managers in Bandung, Indonesia. The Key Performance Indicators (KPI) of a MFI from four perspectives is identified and the relationships between the different components of BSC are also learned. Overall scores of the BSC reveals BRI to be the best MFI, BPRS as the second, followed by BPR and BMT in the third and fourth place respectively. The advantage of BRI is partly due to robust government support that makes it difficult for other smaller MFIs to compete. In contrast, BMT showed a weak institutional structure in terms of BSC’s elements. It seems that BMT is not well managed according to BSC’s key performance indicators. The results indicate that clients, mostly Muslim, had chose the MFI based on the best performance in daily operations and also those affordable instead of choosing a religious/Shari’ah compliant one.
