Abstract

Gunungkidul Regency is the main teak tree (Tectona grandis Linn.f.) producing area in Special Region of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Their trunks are commonly used for furniture and buildings, while leaves are still less of use. Teak leaves contain antioxidant compounds in form of flavonoids that play important role in protecting the body against damaging free radicals in cancer sufferers. The number of cancer sufferers in Indonesia is still high, but cancer problem not yet be handled optimally because cannot be fully reached by the community. The aims of this review are studying the production process of herbal tea from young teak leaf and mechanism of flavonoids as an anticancer. This review was conducted by literature study. The writing source is then analyzed and synthesized to draw conclusions. The results obtained production process of young teak leaf herbal tea through several stages, picking, washing, withering, cutting, fermentation, drying, and packaging. The anticancer activity in young teak leaf herbal tea is influenced by the content of flavonoids as antioxidants that can neutralize free radicals and prevent cancer. The conclusion of this review are young teak leaves (T. grandis) can be used as basic ingredient in herbal teas that are good for health, and flavonoids in young teak leaves are antioxidants that potential as anticancer substances.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the feasibility of tissue culture books based on scientific literacy on the topic of tissue culture media and protoplast culture. The subjects in this study were lecturers of tissue culture courses and students majoring in Biology at Universitas Negeri Medan. This research is a study using the Dick and Carrey model which reaches the eighth step, namely formative evaluation where the process or program is considered complete. The results showed that (1) the assessment of material experts based on content, the suitability of the material with basic competencies and scientific literacy components obtained an average score 3,69 or 92,3% with very worthy criteria, (2) teachers of learning design experts based on material, systematic delivery of material, the efficiency of tissue culture and linguistic books obtained an average score 3,26 or 81,5% with worthy criteria, (3) an assessment by an expert lecturer on book layout design based on the cover design and book content design obtained an average score 3,77 or 94,2% with very worthy criteria, (4) the assessment by the lecturer in the tissue culture course obtained an average score 3,80 or 94,8% with very worthy criteria and (5) the assessment by students obtained an average score 3,52 or 90,6% included the very worthy criteria. So it can be said that the tissue culture textbook based on science literacy that has been developed is feasible according to material expert lecturers, learning designs, book layout designs, lecturers in tissue culture courses and students so that tissue culture books based on scientific literacy on the topic of tissue culture media and protoplast culture can used as a main/additional book for lecturers, students, readers in general and researchers who are interested in the field of tissue culture.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the  effect of using online learning platform on academic  performance  of plant morphology course. The subjects in this study students majoring in Biology at Universitas Negeri Medan. This research is a study using is descriptive with a quantitative approach. The results showed that Students are declared capable of using online learning platforms indicated by the average results of internet searching 88% hypertext navigation 87%, content Evaluation 85% and Knowledge Assembly 81%. (2) Biology student understanding on the final test score is said to be in the very high category with an average of 89.9% and the mid-term grades are categorized as moderate with an average of 85.17%. (3) There is a correlation between student learning literacy and maser the concept through the online learning platform with a correlation of recount = 0.71297.  So students have been able to take advantage of use the online learning platform well in plant morphology course

Abstract

Moss is a plant in the Bryophyta division that has many benefits, especially for the ecosystem. Research on moss diversity has not been widely carried out in the Sulawesi area, especially West Sulawesi. The aim of this study was to determine the diversity of mosses in the forest area of Taupe Village, Mamasa District, Mamasa Regency, West Sulawesi. The sampling was carried out by the cruised method. After that, samples was identified and collected in the form of a herbarium. The research location was divided into 3 stations based on topographic conditions. The results showed that there were 26 species of mosses belonging to 19 families, including: Andreaeaceae, Aneuraceae, Bartramiaceae, Brachytheciaceae, Bryaceae, Dicranaceae, Hookeriaceae, Hypnodendraceae, Jungermaniaceae, Lejeunaceae, Lepidoziaceae, Marchantiaceae, Notothyladaceae, Plagiochilaceae, Pleuroziaceae, Porellaceae, Scapaniaceae, Sematophyllaceae, and Sphagnaceae. The diversity analysis showed that mosses in the Taupe Village Forest had high diversity (H'=3,088), high evenness (E=0,948), low dominance (C=0,051), and medium species richness (R1=4,402).

Abstract

Phalaenopsis amabilis (L.) Blume or moon orchid is a type of orchid that has high economic and aesthetic value, but the flowering time is relatively long. Induction of flowering was carried out by inserting the PaFT gene with the ubiquitin promoter in the plant to obtain transgenic candidate plants (transformants). Transformant plants were grown in New Phalaenopsis (NP) medium for 40 weeks. Molecular analysis on transformant plants obtained P. amabilis transgenic. Amplification with ubiquitin (forward) and T-Nos (reverse) and deg PaFT primers in transgenic plants obtained DNA sequences of 1137 bp and 533 bp, while for non-transformant plants with deg PaFT primers, DNA bands of 1500 bp were obtained. The development of transgenic and non-transformant plants were then compared at 10, 20, 30, and 40 weeks of age. The results showed that transgenic plants produced multiple shoots/multishoots and longer roots compared to the roots of non-transformant plants. According to the literature study, there are morphological differences in some plants that carry the flowering locus T gene compared to nontransforman/wildtype plants.

Abstract

Identification and inventarisation of fish species is important for fisheries data. Information regarding fish species sold within the local markets of Denpasar city-Bali have not been collected and written as a good data, especially identification using molecular methods and comparison between local name and species name. Therefore, this study aims to identify species of pelagic fish sold within markets of Denpasar city using control region mitochondrial (mtDNA) marker. A total of 7 samples of pelagic fish were collected from 2 markets within Denpasar city, in the form of full body fish, fish that has been boiled, and boiled fish body parts. DNA samples were amplified at the control region of mtDNA, and obtained the sequence length of 508-527 bp. Identification was conducted using BLAST methods and phylogenetic analysis. The result showed that the samples were identified as 4 species, i.e. Auxis rochei, Auxis thazard, Thunnus albacares, and Thunnus obesus. Through this study, we also revealed that fish with the local name “ikan tongkol” was the species of Auxis rochei, Auxis thazard, Thunnus albacares, meanwhile fish known as the local name “ikan cakalang” was the species of Thunnus obesus. The results of this study was expected to be a preliminary study about the diversity of fish sold within markets in Denpasar city, and also as the additional genetic data for pelagic fish within Bali waters. This will also act as the additional information for the methods of fish species identification.
