Abstract

This article discusses the philosophical meanings represented by the dominant color in the background of traditional batik cloth in Tuban, East Java, Indonesia. These meanings have provided values and appreciation for the people of Tuban throughout their lives, reflecting a way of life connected to the concept of cosmology from birth to death. However, the current wave of development trends and modernity has impacted how the people of Tuban attribute value and adhere to these philosophical meanings within batik. This research employs an ethnographic approach involving direct data collection at the research location. We immersed ourselves in the local community, engaging in random interactions to gain insight into their thoughts and behaviors. Additionally, to uncover hidden philosophical values, data was collected through oral traditions involving one community leader, two entrepreneurs, and batik craftsmen knowledgeable about these values due to hereditary teachings. Subsequently, the data was analyzed using a phenomenological approach to elucidate the relationship between the philosophical meanings inherent in the traditional Tuban batik color and the daily behavioral patterns of the current population. This exploration illustrates the enduring significance of these philosophical meanings to the Tuban people. These meanings serve as a foundation for contemplating actions that preserve the tradition's continuity in the face of evolving innovations. It is imperative to assess how these values within the tradition are treated—whether maintenance, development, or elimination is appropriate—based on contemporary conditions.

Abstract

Ceramics by artist Bong Lie Phin has a historical record in the world of art by bringing social change to form a new culture through ceramic works. Another thing about ceramic development technology. This research is important in order to provide renewal through ceramic works. As for the research question, namely, how are inductive empiricism, reconstruction, and humanism related to ideas, society, and technology? This research process used qualitative methods with historical, social, and technological approaches and data collection techniques through interviews, literature studies, notes, and documentation documents. In the process of collecting data, researchers will gather information from artists and other supporting data. The data needed is in accordance with the research questions and then tested by involving experts and artists. There are several findings that the artist Bong Lie Phin created works from 1989 to 2020 with the concept of Chinese mythology and interpreted Chinese cultural symbols. This is also supported by the exploration of materials and technologies that develop in making ceramics, but without reducing the value and meaning, it was found that there were financial support factors carried out by the management of these ceramic artists in influencing understanding. Work so that the presence of work continues. Occurs, the work is considered capable of providing transformation of spiritual values; another discussion is the community's contribution in providing understanding in the creation of ceramic art so that the process of reconstruction in the work occurs continuously.

Abstract

The connection between music and the church is integral, especially during worship, where hymns require musical accompaniment. The musical experience influences congregational engagement and emotions. Given the significance of musical accompaniment, diversity is essential. Coaching can enhance musicians' skills and contribute to varied worship experiences. This action research aims to guide music players at GKE Palangka I Palangka Raya to improve their music-playing skills, which are carried out in two cycles. Each cycle consists of four stages: planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The subjects of this study were ten teenage music players. Data were collected through observation, documentation, and skill tests. The data were analyzed by processing scores of assessment aspects, including the ability to imitate sounds, read notation, tempo suitability, intonation accuracy, and fingering techniques. The results increase musicians' skills in playing music through ensemble music, with an increase in the average score of each participant from pre-cycle 52 to the first cycle 62 by 19% and from the first cycle 62 to the second cycle 77 by 24%. This research contributes to the significance of musical diversity in worship, the impact of musical instruments on congregational engagement, and the potential benefits of coaching in enhancing musicians' skills for diverse music presentations, particularly within small musical ensembles. Additionally, this research highlights the significance of a theological-oriented approach to training in music ministry and practice and the potential for collaborative music training to improve musical proficiency in the context of worship.

Abstract

People residing in urban environments, particularly children inhabiting apartments, often contend with limited space for movement. Children require sufficient space for physical activity to support their physical and psychological development. This study analyzes furniture design's influence on children's development. It employs a qualitative research approach with a phenomenological orientation and descriptive analysis. The data collection methods employed in this study encompass literature review, observation, and interviews. The study's participants consist of infants (newborn to 18 months) and toddlers (18 to 36 months) residing in apartments within Kalibata City, along with their caregivers. The study's findings indicate that furniture within confined spaces is not adequately tailored to children's activities and needs, consequently negatively impacting their physical and psychological well-being. Therefore, a furniture redesign to accommodate children's activities and support their development is imperative. This research recommends optimizing furniture design, encompassing construction systems, materials, safety measures, dimensions, and age-appropriate usage. The insights gleaned from this study hold significant value for the real estate industry, furniture design sector, interior design profession, and consumers.

Abstract

This research is focused on exploring the relevance of undagi’s indigenous knowledge implemented on post-pandemic interior design as a recommendation for preserving traditional Balinese architecture in the modern era. As UNESCO promoted safeguarding the "Intangible Cultural Heritage" in 2003, all designers must strengthen the cultural side in still relevant designs for the modern era. In Bali, undagi’s (traditional architect) existence declined in the modern era. Undagi’s indigenous knowledge is the basis for the architectural development of traditional Balinese houses (umah) for designing tourism facilities as research objects. This research is a desk study with a critical analytical approach that qualitatively conducts a comparative study between indigenous knowledge and post-pandemic interior design recommendations with two stages of research—in the first stage, critically analyzing post-pandemic interior design recommendations by previous researchers with a systemic literature review. In the second stage, exploring undagi’s indigenous knowledge consists of explicit and tacit knowledge. The result of the two stages is the formulation of the relevance of undagi’s indigenous knowledge in post-pandemic interior design in Bali. The study results show that the undagi’s indigenous knowledge has relevance, which aligns with the recommendations for post-pandemic interior design criteria by previous researchers. This relevance is closely relevant, and several relevant values require development and interpretation to have interconnectivity between modern and traditional values. This process of interconnectivity must prioritize the principle of preserving traditional Balinese architecture in the modern era.

Abstract

The Prodigal Son, a well-known biblical parable cherished by children, has never been depicted using Balinese wayang, presenting an opportunity for cultural enrichment. This research aims to select appropriate Balinese wayang characters for the Bible story "The Lost Child." The motivation behind this study is to bridge the gap between the western visual style often associated with biblical depictions and the captivating Balinese wayang tradition, rekindling children's interest and appreciation for the narrative. The qualitative research method utilizes Thomas Aquinas' Christian theoretical literature and Balinese aesthetic theory, complemented by interviews and FGDs with fellow Doctoral students. The findings yield a deep correlation between the aesthetic theories, laying the foundation for selecting wayang characters. Wayang Tualen represents the father's kind traits, while Merdah embodies the adventurous youngest son. Sangut portrays the passionate firstborn, Cenk and Blonk represent dynamic and critical aspects, and Delem embodies arrogance and cunning. The research discussions enrich the study's scope, contributing to Balinese cultural preservation and its fusion with global characterizations. This artistic amalgamation fosters cross-cultural appreciation and artistic regeneration among younger generations with both the characters in the story and the characters in the Balinese wayang.
