Abstract

This research aims to identify the difficulties faced by English literature students at Ahmad Dahlan University in developing their English speaking skills and the strategies they employ to overcome those challenges. This qualitative study involved in-depth semi-structured interviews with two 5th semester English literature students. The interview results revealed that speaking anxiety and fear of negative evaluation were common psychological obstacles. However, the specific difficulties of the two participants varied, ranging from vocabulary retrieval, pronunciation, fluency to expanding academic vocabulary. Both utilized individualized strategies tailored to their particular gaps, such as repetition practice or vocabulary expansion through reading. These findings highlight the contextualized, personalized nature of attaining speaking mastery. Abstract

Teaching English writing to Vietnamese learners, non-native English speaker, who come from different geographical location and cultural backgrounds is completely challenging and time-consuming. It is not an overnight success but it requires restless efforts and attempts from both teachers and learners. Writing letter is absolutely crucial as it is seen as a social practice in daily communication. This article is of great value for theoretical and practical purpose in teaching English writing as second language. It’s worthy to raise the awareness of learners that the merits of teaching writing do not only lie on teaching grammar and vocabulary but introducing learners to convey messages to serve the primary purpose of communication in a social context in the real world and there is an emphasis on teaching writing and cognitive style as well as cultural and experiential models of English native speakers. The study reveals that translation “bilingual– their mother tongue” is the main source of difficulty in writing process. Teachers, therefore, should pass the concept of “root thought” and “choice of meaning” on to the learners to enable them to recognize the cognitive process of writing and the distinctive features between their first language and English. This study makes some great contribution to theoretical and empirical perspectives of teaching writing as second language acquisition.

Abstract

This study investigated the language status of the Ilocano language through an analysis of the language use and language preference of selected Ilocano speaker. This study used a questionnaire on language use to gather relevant data. Using the descriptive method, the results of the study show that the Ilocano language is slowly being edged by the Filipino language in the five communicative domains: home, school, neighborhood, church, and marketplace in terms of language functions. One reason why the Ilocano language is losing its communicative domains is because of the devaluation of the minority languages over the national language. The use of Filipino as a medium of instruction has resulted to the fluency of the Ilocano speakers in the Filipino language because they are exposed to the language all day during schooldays, thus, making it difficult for the native language to cast a strong hold. Moreover, since the university where the respondents work caters not only students from the province of La Union but also and mostly even from Pangasinan, Ilocano teachers/speakers assume that it would be better to use the Filipino language to cater the bilingualism and multilingualism in their classes and surroundings.

Abstract

Investigating the factors influencing the frequency of language usage in a community is crucial for understanding the vitality of its native language. This qualitative study investigated the health of the Ilokano language through an exploration of the factors that affect language use among selected Ilokano speakers in the municipality of Agoo, La Union. A written/mailed interview was used to capture relevant data for exploring this exploration. The findings of the study revealed a concerning trend, revealing two emerging factors significantly influencing language use: 1) generational shifts and 2) technological advances. Recognizing and addressing the factors contributing to the decline of Ilokano in Agoo is essential for fostering linguistic diversity and cultural richness and maintaining a vibrant local identity. This deficiency in research on language vitality is particularly concerning given the intricate interplay of sociocultural, economic, and technological factors that shape the linguistic landscape of diverse communities. While there are challenges due to generational shifts and technological advances, ongoing enhancement efforts offer hope for the future of Ilokano. Despite the challenges, the future of Ilokano is not predetermined. By acknowledging its importance, supporting enhancement efforts, and embracing technological opportunities, the Ilokano community can ensure the language continues to thrive for generations to come.

Abstract

This study examines the effect of the appearance-based approach in enhancing students' short story writing skills at MA Model Zainul Hasan. The research highlights challenges such as low literacy rates and limited English vocabulary, particularly in Islamic boarding schools, which hinder students’ writing development. The study aims to address these issues by integrating innovative methods to improve literacy and writing skills. Using a qualitative descriptive method, data were collected through classroom observations and interviews. The findings reveal that the appearance-based approach significantly enhances students' ability to organize and express ideas creatively. It also boosts their confidence in public speaking through storytelling exercises. Furthermore, the method fosters collaboration among students and supports the development of critical thinking and creativity. The study concludes that short story writing, supported by appearance-based techniques, is an effective strategy for overcoming language barriers and improving literacy. The implications suggest that educators should adopt similar innovative approaches to nurture students' motivation, creativity, and engagement in writing activities. This research contributes to the development of practical teaching strategies in contexts with limited exposure to English.

Abstract

Classroom management is a critical component of effective teaching, particularly for English Education student teachers who must navigate the intersection of pedagogical theory and practice in culturally and religiously influenced settings. However, student teachers often face significant challenges, such as student disengagement, language barriers, and undermined authority, which are exacerbated in unique institutional contexts like Indonesia’s Islamic universities. This study explores the classroom management difficulties encountered by 10 student teachers from UIN Palangka Raya during their practicum in Kementerian Agama-affiliated schools, as well as the strategies they employ to address these challenges. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews and teaching practicum reports, followed by thematic analysis. Findings revealed that student teachers struggled with low motivation for English learning, passive participation, and cultural-linguistic preferences, compounded by institutional policies that diminished their authority. To mitigate these issues, they adopted strategies such as differentiated instruction, behavioral management techniques, engagement boosters (e.g., gamification), and relationship-building. However, the effectiveness of these strategies was often limited by large class sizes and short practicum durations. The study underscores the need for teacher education programs to incorporate culturally responsive pedagogy, extended practicums, and structured mentorship to better prepare student teachers for the complexities of classroom management in diverse educational settings. These findings highlight the importance of context-specific training to enhance both teacher preparedness and student learning outcomes.
