Abstract

This study aims to analyze the determinants of cultural poverty in the Kedu Raya Region by examining the effects of Minimum District/City Wage, Life Expectancy, Average Years of Schooling, and Dependency Ratio on the number of poor people. Using panel data from six districts/cities in Kedu Raya from 2015 to 2024, the analysis was conducted through a log-linear panel regression model. The results show that the city minimum wage has a negative and significant effect on poverty levels, indicating that higher minimum wages help reduce poverty. Average Years of Schooling also has a negative and significant effect, emphasizing the crucial role of education in shaping economic behavior and reducing cultural poverty. In contrast, life expectancy and dependency ratio exhibit positive but insignificant effects. Simultaneously, all variables collectively influence poverty levels in the region. These findings highlight that improving education, enhancing health quality, and implementing appropriate wage policies can effectively reduce cultural poverty and support sustainable human development in the Kedu Raya Region.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the determinants of poverty in five districts with high poverty levels in West Java Province. Indramayu Regency, Kuningan Regency, Tasikmalaya City, Majalengka Regency, and Cirebon Regency over the period 2009–2023. The explanatory variables include economic growth, Human Development Index (HDI), open unemployment rate, and income inequality. This study employs secondary data obtained from Statistics Indonesia (BPS) and applies panel data regression analysis. Model selection is conducted using the Chow test and Hausman test, indicating that the Fixed Effect Model is the most appropriate estimation approach. The empirical results reveal that all independent variables jointly have a significant effect on poverty levels. Partially, HDI, open unemployment rate, and income inequality are found to have a statistically significant effect on poverty, while economic growth does not show a significant impact. These findings suggest that poverty in regions with high poverty levels is multidimensional and cannot be explained solely by economic growth performance. Therefore, poverty reduction policies should emphasize improvements in human development, labor market conditions, and income distribution to achieve more inclusive and sustainable poverty alleviation.

Abstract

The creative economy is often associated with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), that have been important to a nation's or region's economy (Harahap et al., 2022). Both developed and developing countries' economies depend heavily on SMEs because of their contribution to the expansion of each country's gross domestic product (Harahap et al., 2020). More creative industry business units than other city districts can be found in Padang City, one of the West Sumatra Province’s cities (West Sumatera Tourism Office, 2021). Where these SMEs also absorb more labor than large-scale businesses. Increasing the competitiveness of this creative industry is needed to boost the increase in regional income and community welfare. This study aims to assess and identify the top creative industries, consider Padang City's potential and obstacles to making its creative industries more competitive, and analyze the roles of the three stakeholders in the creative industry—the community, entrepreneurs or academics, and the government. The research method uses Comparative Advantage, Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP), and SWOT analysis.

Abstract

Pohuwato Regency in Gorontalo Province possesses significant economic potential but faces challenges in transforming its economy from extractive sectors. This study aims to formulate strategic recommendations for the Pohuwato Regency Government to enhance investment in leading sectors to drive regional economic growth. The research method employs both quantitative and qualitative approaches using Location Quotient (LQ), Shift-Share Analysis (SSA), and Klassen Typology to map the regional economic structure. Additionally, Focus Group Discussions (FGD) were utilized to shape investment policy directions. Data collection was conducted through the compilation of secondary data for the 2020-2024 period. The study results identify Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries and Manufacturing Industries as basic and prime sectors requiring investment priority. Recommended policy strategies include: (1) creating a competitive national business climate; (2) focusing investment on basic needs, priority industries, export orientation, green investment, infrastructure, and innovation; (3) protecting and developing MSMEs and cooperatives; (4) improving local workforce quality; (5) providing investment facilities; (6) improving investment distribution; (7) promoting investment; and (8) fostering investment cooperation. Implementation of these strategies is expected to create a competitive and sustainable business climate in Pohuwato Regency

Abstract

Economic growth in border regions plays a vital role in reducing regional disparities and strengthening national economic integration. Nevertheless, border areas in West Kalimantan continue to face structural challenges, particularly with regard to human capital quality, the effectiveness of fiscal transfers, and the utilization of infrastructure. This study aims to examine the determinants of economic growth in these regions using a panel data approach. The analysis incorporates average years of schooling, trade, Special Allocation Funds (DAK), General Allocation Funds (DAU), road infrastructure, and electricity as explanatory variables. The empirical model applies a Random Effects Model (REM) estimated through Generalized Least Squares (GLS). The findings reveal that average years of schooling has a positive and statistically significant effect on economic growth, highlighting the critical role of human capital in promoting regional development. In contrast, trade and General Allocation Funds (DAU) do not show statistically significant effects. Special Allocation Funds (DAK), as well as road and electricity infrastructure, exhibit significant negative effects, indicating that fiscal transfers and infrastructure provision have not yet been effectively translated into productive economic activity. These results suggest that, in the short term, economic growth in border regions is influenced more by improvements in human capital than by fiscal transfers and physical infrastructure. Therefore, policy efforts should prioritize strengthening human capital while enhancing the effectiveness of fiscal allocation and infrastructure utilization to support sustainable regional development.

Abstract

The Membina Ekonomi Keluarga Sejahtera (Mekaar) Program, administered by PT Permodalan Nasional Madani (PNM), is a microfinance initiative designed to enhance the economic independence of underprivileged women through access to small-scale financing. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the PNM Mekaar Program in strengthening the economic capacity of underprivileged women in Salatiga City. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed to explore beneficiaries’ experiences in accessing and utilizing microfinance services. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation involving eight informants, comprising six Mekaar beneficiaries and two supporting informants, namely an Account Officer (AO) and a member of another Mekaar group. The data were analyzed using an interactive model consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the Mekaar Program has improved access to financing for underprivileged women through simple administrative requirements and a joint liability system that fosters financial discipline. However, its effectiveness in promoting women’s economic independence remains limited. Most beneficiaries tend to use the financing primarily for household consumption rather than for productive business purposes. Furthermore, limited financial literacy and the absence of structured business mentoring constrain the program’s potential to generate sustainable economic empowerment. These findings suggest that access to microfinance alone is insufficient to strengthen women’s economic empowerment without adequate financial literacy education and systematic business assistance. Therefore, improving beneficiary selection, strengthening financial literacy programs, and providing structured business mentoring are essential to enhance the effectiveness of the Mekaar Program in supporting sustainable economic empowerment among underprivileged women.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of agglomeration economies on technical inefficiency at the firm level of the manufacturing industry in East Java. The data establish from an annual survey of medium and large manufacturing conducted by Statistical Indonesia covering 2010-204. The Stochastic Frontier Analysis method is used to determine the economic agglomeration of technical inefficiency. The results show that specialization has positive influence on technical inefficiency, while Diversion and Firm Size have a negative influence on technical inefficiency of manufacturing industry firms in East Java Province. Although competition does not influence technical inefficiency. Therefore, the government should consider the externalities of agglomeration including specialization, diversity, and competition, that provide significant advantages to manufacturing companies in East Java. Nevertheless, while these agglomeration benefits contribute to economic growth, they often do not correspond to the actual environmental conditions.
