Abstract

This paper aims to describe the analysis of the existence of interference in student’s speaking at English department at IAIN Imam Bonjol Padang. There are three focus issues in this research. First, the student’s comprehension of language interference, then the existence of level language interference and the last student’s speaking process in English class. The type of this research is descriptive research with purposive sampling. Data were collected through observation, interviews and video recording. The results of this research showed there are three levels of interference existed, namely, grammatical level, cultural level and sound level. From the phenomenon in the class explain that the student generalizes the language pattern and misplaced word. It should be repaired by changing the position of word but the students did not have ability to discriminate the language pattern that is used in first language and target language. Then, students used this level of interference with unconsciously they did not know about the level of interference, so that they can not detect their mistake. And these mistakes occur also because they have lack of ability in understanding linguistic features sufficiently. Therefore, the study about language interference level is necessary for students speaking learning process as additional source about how to speak in target language appropriately without the deviation of language structure and the use of language.

Abstract

This article is based on the part of the research entitled “Pergeseran Sistem Pembentukan Kata Bahasa Indonesia: Kajian Morfologi dan Sosiolinguistik”. This research is aimed at revealing the shift in Indonesian word formation. The data of this research are Indonesian words formed through word formation. The data were taken from Indonesian newspapers, tabloids, and magazines. The findings show that the shift happened in the processes of Indonesian word formation including borrowing, translation, derivation, acronym, blending, and clipping

Abstract

This is to provide idea on taching English today. Language is unique with reference to text and context. Both text and context cannot be separated between one and another to comprehend and produce meaning. No one language is better than other (s). Each of languages is better, best and unique with reference to the application of text and context as human production. Taching English is now familiarly as language production internationally.Language production is process of conveying the meaning or experience in spoken and written language. The process of language production in this study is concerned to the speech production. A child and the closest family members need time, patient, and optimism. Thus, we need the theory of language production, that is phonetics and phonology. Phonetics is the study of speech sounds.Phonology is the study of the sound system of language. In teaching Enlish today, English is already devided into three circles, (1) Inner cirlce-mother tongue, (2) outer circle-second user, and (3) expanding circle-foreign user. The three of them must be standardized for teaching by International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and Received Pronunciation (RP).

Abstract

Podcasting is a multimedia that provides a lot of authentic listening materials and it can be downloaded on the internet freely. Podcasting nowadays become an altemative way of leaming listening which can give positive effects torvards students' listening comprehension. Using podcast as a medium for learning opens a new opportunityy in the language leaming context This research was carried out at English the Study program of the Islamic University of Riau Pekanbaru.The objective of this research is to find out the impact of using podcast in English listening process on the students' listening comprehension ability. The sample of this research consisted of 31 students drawn by purposive random sampling from the students of the second semester. The instrument of this research was listening test by using TOEFL IBT. In this research the test consist of six topics with 30 items questions. The effectiveness of podcast can be seen in improving students' listening comprehension by comparing average scores of pre-test and post-test. After analyzing the test, the writers found that the mean score of post-test is greater than pre-test (36.38 for post-test and 27.80 for pretest) significantly at 1% level. Therefore, the null hypothesis is rejected and the alternative hypothesis is accepted. It means, podcast can give the positive effect on the students' listening comprehension.

Abstract

This research discussed about the use of metonymy in conveying information in college environment. The aim of this research is to find out the kinds of metonymy that used by speakers to another speaker in uttering, mentioning and delivering their thoughts. It is to understand the meaning of utterances that use metonymy which are spread out from speakers. This research was used qualitative approach. In obtaining the data, the researcher used non-participant observational technique with observational method. The following techniques in obtaining data were recording and note taking technique. The location sources of data were taken from utterances of students and lecturers. Based on theories provided, the data were analyzed one by one to know the type of metonymy used and the meaning of it. To focus on the study, the data were limited to be analyzed, only metonymy which were delivered by lecturers of English Department in STKIP PGRI were listened and recorded by researcher in college field during a month. From the analysis, this research found spatial, temporal and abstract as metonymy’s kinds which were used for conveying information.

Abstract

Many students in Indonesia are using Smartphones such as blackberry, android and iOS. But many of the students are not fully utilize the applications in Smartphone to support their English learning. In Smartphone, there is Google store which is a service from Google that provides English dictionary application and other English applications that student can use for learning English. From this point, students who cannot escape from their Smartphone would be productive if they are able to take advantage of English learning applications. Therefore, utilizing the Smartphone as a fun learning media is one way of students to enhance their English capability relaxively and fun. The use of this method is expected to be a special strategy for students who already cannot get away from their gadgets and Smartphone to be able to learn and enhance their English capability. This presentation aims to report the results of investigating study in the use of Smartphone as a fun media to help enhance English capability in students through English applications. A review of the literature on language teaching using the Smartphone as a fun media will be reviewed. Finally, the presentation will discuss how the role of Smartphone in the process of learning English.

Abstract

Coherence is one of the characteristic of good abstract that represent the whole content of research article in order to be able to show what messages want to be expressed. This study investigated the English abstract International conference in applied linguistisc written by Indonesian speaker in its coherence by analyzing the theme and rheme. This study focuses on (1) identifying thematic progressions which are dominantly used in 2015 International conference article abstracts written by non-native speaker of English (2) finding out coherences’ quality of the research article abstract section in 2105 International Conference article abstracts in applied linguistic based on thematic progression. This study was designed by using descriptive qualitative with content anlysis approach. The results show that Zig Zag (Simple Linear) pattern in thematic progression is dominantly used in International Conference Article Abstract then followed by reitaration (Constant) theme, and the last Multiple (Split) pattern. None of the abstracts use Derived TP pattern. Most of the research article abstracts section in International Conference abstracts in applied linguistic have fair quality, just a few included to less quality, none of them was catagorized as good and poor quality. It can be concluded that 2015 International conference article abstracts in applied linguistisc written by Indonesian speakers can be catagorized as good abstract based on their coherence.

Abstract

As the official language of ASEAN Economic Community, the ability to use English in communication will inevitably be listed as the main requirement for the process of both job recruitment and career development in the participating countries. Despite of its importance, the process of teaching English i.e. speaking presents the lecturer with several challenges. Some of which are students’ inability to organize their ideas to speak, the inappropriate implemented instructional framework, and other related problems. Regarding to this phenomenon, this research is aimed to design speaking instructional material for English Departement students. This study belongs to Research and Development (R & D). It was conducted in English Department of STKIP AbdiPendidikanPayakumbuh. The steps involved in this research were analyzing the existing material, doing need analysis, designing the material, and validating the material. The data were collected through observation, interview, and questionnaire. The research findingsreveal that there are some facets in speaking;communicating opinions and information on daily topics,using appropriate language and diction while speaking,organizing ideas coherently,expressing and justifying the opinions, and speculating about an issue. From these findings, it is suggested for the lecturer to design instructional material that corresponds to students’ needs since it will assist not only the students but also  for the lecturer to achieve the learning objectives.

Abstract

All of English skills cannot be separated each other. Integrating one skill to others is needed to avoid a skill gap. Based on the previous research, reading and speaking skills have high relationship in teaching and learning English. By reading, the students ian acquire the vocabulary as the most important thing in speaking. The inrportance ofvocabulary knowledge is to facilitate the speaking. In vice versa, the authentic reading text can be expressed through speaking to help the comprehension of the students. They can comprehend the authentic reading text in many ways. One of the ways is through saying something about what they have read. The procedure of say something strategy are making a prediction, asking question, clasifying misunderstood part making a comment, and making a connection. All of procedures give the students a chance to think and comprehend what they are reading before doing interactive speaking in a group. Therefore, literature study was used to know whether say sornething strategy can be an integrated strategy which is potential to develop the reading comprehension and speaking ability. This article focuses on how say something strategy relates to develop reading comprehension and finally how it contributes to speaking ability.

Abstract

The purposes of this research were to explain to what extent of PBL could improve nurse students’ spoken English skill, and to find out factors involved in the improvement. The participants of this research were nurse students of 2006 registered year of Nursing Program of Medicine Faculty at Andalas University. The methodology of this research was Classroom Action Research consisting of three cycles. Each cycle involved planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. Based on the research finding, after giving speaking task and speaking test during the first cycle, their spoken English skill was still fair. Therefore, the writer needed to continue the research to the second cycle. From the speaking test at the second cycle, it could be known that their spoken English skill was good, while from the speaking task, their spoken English skill has not good yet, so that the writer continued the research to the third cycle. During this third cycle, it seemed that their spoken English skill for the speaking task and the speaking test was better. In this case they have had correct accent, less mistakes in grammar, appropriate word choices, fluent speaking, and better understanding to the discussed topics. The factors known to be involved to the improvement were hidden spoken English skills, scenarios’ understanding, the availability of references, preparation, remembering ability, braveness, class atmosphere, and motivation.
