Abstract

Most of Balinese people are bound with their social life and have a close relationship among others. They are being bound to the village traditions and determined by their bound to their residence as well as to the organization named Banjar. Banjar is also a place where Balinese people mingle and conduct a traditional meeting. The conversation was held when people were doing discussion in a social meeting. The topic was about ritual ceremonies which spend a lot of money and this meeting led by Kelian Banjar (Leader of Banjar). The data was collected by using observational method by note taking and emphasizing the important points, i.e. the choice was made on the priority based on the frequency of the conversation done by the people. From the conversation, the role of language in society can be observed in the context of situation; in this case: ‘in-group language’. We can observe a meaning deviance in first session when the explanation of Kelian was interrupted by the first participant and the second participant. Beside that, two languages were used in conversation, and show us that code-switching occurs in this conversation. The reason of code-switching usage in conversation above is that because those participants lack of ability in one language when talking about a particular topic. They switched when they could not find an appropriate word or expression or when the language being used does not have the items or appropriate translations for the vocabulary needed.

It deals with explicit knowledge about language, and conscious perception and sensitivity in language learning, language teaching and language use. Language awareness includes the knowledge about language, a conscious understanding of how languages work, of how people learn them and use them. One of technique that can be used to develop students’ language awareness is through discovery learning. It is an inquiry-based theory which encourages students to be active agents in their own learning process, including in language learning. Discovery learning in English language teaching allows the students to work on language by having a role in their own learning and developing their activity through the language. So, this paper aims to give an overview how to apply discovery learning in English language teaching to develop student language awareness.

All the teachers are asked to fill in the questionnaire. Data analysis conducted through interpretation of each items to see the quality of their perceptions and Likert-scale to see their perceptions’ quantity. Abstract

This multiple case study investigated how teachers implemented motivational teaching strategies and the impact of these strategies on students' motivation in an lndonesian high school context. The participants were four teachers and four groups of their students. The data were collected by conducting semi structure interview for teachers, classroom observation, stimulated recall, and focus group interviews for students. Each teacher had unique strategies to motivate their students and these strategies impacted on students' motivation. The students reported that the strategies influencing their motivation can be categorised into five main groups: teachers' classroom behaviours, supportive classroom atmosphere, selection of learning resources, and activities, the usefulness of English, and the way feedback is given. These findings suggest that teachers of English in an Indonesian high school context can influence their students' motivation by understanding the impact of motivational teaching strategies on students' learning and behaviour.

Abstract

Videos are engaging. They teach students to plan, organize, write, communicate, collaborate, and analyze. This paper reports on a case study of the role of video projects in improving students’ participation in conversation class. Students’ low motivation in conversation class is presumbly caused by their less ideas to maximize the technology they had to draw in and connect them in innovative ways. This research is aimed at examining whether video projects can better improve students’ participation in English conversation. The result showed the improvements in terms of numbers of exchanges the students could produce in a conversation, students’ turn-taking, and students’ back-channeling. It indicated that video projects is really a great way to encourage students’ participation in conversation. As this media further matures, students may need to be able to express themselves as effectively through moving imagery as with the written word.

Abstract

English teachers teach many forms of writing from the argumentative essay to creative writing. Students who seek entry to overseas graduate programs must also be able to write a research statement which is less commonly taught in Sl programs. Additionally they must also be able to communicate writing expectations to reference letter writers who serve as writing colleagues. Most challenging are the differences in the cultural assumptions of the readers of these documents. In this presentation Adrian argues for understanding and explicit teaching of these genres of writing.
