Korea 'Morally Reprehensible' on Rights" by applying Van Dijk model in Critical Discourse Analysis. This research aims to describe the critical discourse analysis van Dijk model constructed by Lesley Wroughton and David Brunnstrom as the news writers on April 22, 2018 at the official The Jakarta Globe. The theory used is van Dijk critical discourse analysis model. The result and discussion of this research indicate that (1) the macro structure contained in the discourse, namely human rights abuses (2) the superstructure, the introduction is opened by US labeling China, Russia, Iran and Korea as "morally reprehensible" on rights countries and highlighted by the arguments of US Deputy Secretary of State, John J. Sullivan and US relations with those countries (3) the microstructure, in semantic analysis, the negative statements used by the US to criticize China, Russia, Iran and Korea. In terms of syntax, the conjunction ‘and’ and ‘that’ dominate the content of this news to connect each clauses. In Stylistics, choice of negative words is used. From the rhetorical point of view, the size and type of letters indicate that human rights abuses are focussed.

Abstract

This paper is aimed at discussing the way how to integrate genre skills and reading skills in teaching reading at EFL classes in Indonesia. These two skills should be taught simultaneously in the classroom by the teacher as genre-based approach is applied in teaching reading today at junior and senior high schools. By this approach, the students are expected to be able to comprehend some kinds of monologue texts, such as narrative, recount, descriptive, procedure, explanation and exposition and functional texts like advertisement, announcement, letter, invitation and so forth. On the other hand, the students are also demanded to acquire the reading sub-skills in order that they are able to comprehend the text well. These reading sub-skills are unavoidable to get by the students because they will help them to read more effectively, quickly and easily. For this reason, a reading teacher should be able to find the way how to integrate the genre skills and reading skills in reading classes. If the teacher cannot do that, he/she will fail in his/her job. In this paper, the writer will discuss more deeply about this issue, so that the reader, especially teachers later on will get more information and knowledge in teaching reading. To do the integration, the teacher does not only need appropriate teaching techniques, but also media and materials chosen. In addition, how the teacher designs teaching and learning activities will determine the success in the classroom.

Abstract

Major changes in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) have made lecturers need to come up with an idea of bringing it into the classroom. Indeed, lecturers may not just neglect the impact of new technologies and fail to incorporate them in their teaching practice. One big evolution in classroom technology has been in the development of using webtools for teaching writing. Storybird; a website 2.0 tool, is an excellent new media for teaching narrative writing. It will not only highly motivate the students to write in English and other languages but also it gives an opportunity for the students to control their learning experiences by means of technology device. Beside Storybird can be easily accessed by the students using their netbook, smartphones, or other devices. Thus, this paper deals with the use of Storybird in teaching narrative writing.

Abstract

Facing multidimensional English language teaching in changing EFL context challenges teachers to prepare their students by facilitating them with teaching materials based on the approach that could possibly answer the challenge. This paper try to explore task based approach teaching material which the writer believes has some qualifications for that challenge. It is based on the concept behind the approach that brings the real world task of the language (the usage of the language in the real situation) into pedagogical task (the usage of language in classroom). By transferring the real usage of the language into the usage in classroom in the form of teaching material, it is hoped that the language learning could prepare the students to use the language as it is used to communicate and do other business in life with multi- languages and cultural people in the next free trade. It is also hoped to be used an alternative for the teachers in preparing their classroom activity.  The writer also present – as an example - teaching material, a hand out, for seven grade students of junior high school designed based on the approach. Finally, this paper is hoped can give contributions in designing teaching material for English language teachers.

Abstract

This paper discusses the strategy of integrating the language learners’ intercultural communication competence in teaching oral communication skill. The idea emerges from the concept that English teaching and learning acquires a need to understand intercultural communication competence. An English language class that just focuses on grammar, syntax, phonetics, and some social conventions associated with the target language cannot contribute significantly into the learners’ insight on how people whose different culture communicate. Moreover, intercultural communication is more complex than communication between persons of the same culture. Thus, the practitioners of English language teaching need to know how to integrate the knowledge of intercultural communication in English language classes. However, there is no universally accepted strategy that can be applied by the instructors on how to integrate intercultural communication competence into the lessons at the classroom. This paper specifically proposes the strategy of integrating intercultural communicative competence in teaching English speaking skill. The strategy mostly encompasses activating learners’ cultural awareness, considering context, understanding obstacles to intercultural communication, understanding verbal and nonverbal issues, and designing classroom tasks for the intercultural competence. By including such strategy, the learners are guided not only in more successful communication, but also in constructing meaningful relationship with the target language speakers.

Abstract

English Department’s Self Access Language Learning Center (SALLC) is one of facilities which is designed for students to improve their English skills. The students have access to resources in form photocopied exercises with answer keys to train their ability in English language skills and language components. SALLC promotes the approach where students study independently choosing from among different resources that are available. With a proper use, it can result an empowerment and better learning outcomes, but when the materials are not suitable with curriculum demands, it can be problematic. For this reason, it is important to do a need analysis for SALLC materials and its correlation with KKNI based curriculum. This article is written based on a research that has been conducted in English Department of FBS UNP in 2013 under the title SALLC Material Development Based on KKNI Curriculum Learning Outcomes. From the result of the research it is found that the users of SALLC need more variation of SALLC materials dealing with English language skills (speaking, writing, listening, and reading) and language components (vocabulary and grammar). Another finding of the research is the users of SALLC need materials that are suitable with the KKNI based Curriculum, so what they learn in the classroom can be practiced independently in SALLC by accessing various materials in any levels (basic, intermediate and advance). This article is focusing on the discussion of reading exercises

Abstract

There have been plenty studies conducted in order to find and develop the best techniques and strategies to help improving students’ reading comprehension. Those teaching techniques and strategies were mostly developed based on teachers’ work on existing the theories and framework. However, amid the development and practices of these techniques and strategies, students’ perceptions towards the teaching and learning process get less attention. Therefore, this study tries to bring the light into students’ perceptions. This study aimed to examine and compare students’ and teachers’ perception regarding students’ reading difficulties. Through random sampling, 80 students of English Department at the University of Bengkulu were chosen to fill a questionnaire. The questionnaire was developed based on reading macro and micro skills to investigate students’ reading difficulties. The similar questionnaire was also given to 4 lecturers who teach reading courses in the department. Some students and teachers were also interviewed to clarify some information or to get more elaboration about some interesting points. The results of the study showed that students and teachers’ agree in some points and showed different perceptions in some points. The finding of this study will be a good reflection for the teachers as well as for the students on their reading activities in the classroom. Furthermore, it is helpful for the teachers in their efforts to develop better program for reading classes to improve students’ reading comprehension.
