Abstract

Abstract

Choices of childbirth places among women may influence the rate of maternal mortality which is still a major challenge especially in developing countries like Nigeria. Some of these choices could be influenced by social and economic factors and the commonest being home birth which increases maternal risks. This study aimed to find out the prevalent socio-economic factors that influence the birthplace choices among the women in a suburban community in Rivers State, Nigeria. The study utilized a descriptive, cross-sectional design. Respondents were selected through simple random sampling. A self-structured questionnaire was used to collect data for the study. The data were analyzed using frequency and percentage for descriptive statistics and chi-square for inferential statistics with the SPSS software at 0.05 level of significance. The result showed that most of the women had secondary education (57.1%) and choose health facility for childbirth (91.4%).There was significant association between distance (x²= 12.69, p= 0.005)and available finance (x²= 10.26, p= 0.016), and educational qualifications (x²= 18.75, p= 0.005)and the choices of childbirth places among the women, but there was no significant association between road access to health facility (x²= 5.47, p= 0.140)and unavailability of skilled birth personnel (x²= 6.23, p= 0.101) and income (x²= 8.38, p= 0.212) and choices of childbirth places among the women. This study has shown that there is influence of some socio-economic factors on the choices women make on childbirth places.

Abstract

Fetal growth monitoring can be observed by measuring the Symphysis-Fundal Height (SFH). To determine fetal growth, the SFH measurement is calculated into the Estimation Fetal Weight (EFW) formula. EFW formulas using SFH measurements include the Niswander method and the Risanto formula. This study aims to compare the results of the calculation of the EFW formula which is closest to the birth weight of the baby. This study is a comparative descriptive study with a cross-sectional design, which measures the SFH and weighs the baby's birth weight directly. The population of this research is pregnant women who will give birth at RSUD Soewondo Kendal. A total of 176 samples were taken using a consecutive sampling technique. The results of the independent t-test showed that the Risanto formula had no difference in the birth weight of the baby, while the Niswander method had a significant difference in the actual birth weight of the baby.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the knowledge and practices of delivery room midwives on delayed umbilical cord clamping (DCC). This descriptive study was conducted with a total of 1,274 delivery room midwives from five regions of Turkey. The data were collected using a Google survey form. Most of the midwives defined DCC as clamping the umbilical cord in term newborns after cessation of pulsations (47.2%), and as clamping the umbilical cord in preterm newborns within 15-30 seconds of birth (31.2%). Their highest DCC time ranged between 0-10 seconds for term and preterm newborns (34.7% and 54.8%, respectively). The rates of applying DCC were 17.6% and 5.3% in term and preterm newborns, respectively. Dealing with the mother (75.6% and 33.4%, respectively), having workload (27.5% and 24.6%, respectively), considering that the newborn would have respiratory distress (16.1% and 33.4%), considering that the newborn would get cold (10.7% and 13.9%, respectively), preventing polycythemia and hyperbilirubinemia (6.7% and 9.7%, respectively), and being afraid of dropping the newborn (5.3% and 19%, 8, respectively) are the most common reasons for midwives not to apply DCC to term and preterm newborns. The majority of the midwives reported that they had no DCC protocol in their institution (80.5%) and did not receive in-service training on DCC (76.5%). This study has concluded that most midwives do not know the correct definition of DCC, do not apply DCC correctly, have quite short DCC times, have no DCC protocol in their institutions and do not receive in-service training on DCC.This article is retracted as requested by the authors. Abstract

Childbirth is considered a frightening and painful process for most pregnant women, especially primiparas. This causes pregnant women to choose cesarean delivery. A gentle birth program is an approach to care for pregnancy and childbirth that helps mothers overcome their anxiety in dealing with childbirth. This study aimed to determine the factors that encourage mothers to carry out a gentle birth program. This type of research is a narrative literature review. The research was conducted from October to December 2021. Article searches were accessed through the PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar databases. Articles were selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. The analysis was carried out on ten research articles. The results of internal factors that encourage mothers to carry out a gentle birth program are the mother's knowledge, mother's interest, mother's motivation, mother's perception, mother's experience of childbirth, mother's psychological aspect, and mother's belief in her abilities. Meanwhile, external factors encouraging mothers to carry out a gentle birth program are the husband's support, support from health workers, family and friends, and health facilities. The mother's knowledge is the dominant internal factor that encourages mothers to carry out a gentle birth program. Meanwhile, the husband's support is the dominant external factor that encourages mothers to carry out a gentle birth program

Abstract

Introduction: Covid-19 is becoming a serious problem worldwide. The spread of disease occurs very quickly, viral mutations are fast and massive. Rules and guidelines change rapidly.  WHO and UNICEF recommend exclusive breastfeeding, even though mothers are confirmed because the benefits are considered greater than the risks. The aim of this study are to answer questions, about whether this virus can transmit vertically through breast milk, and how to properly guide the breastfeeding process in the pandemic. Methods: The source of this literature review is accessed through Scopus, PubMed, and various reputable websites published in 2019-2021. Article search by keyword usage, inclusion criteria and exclusion. Results: 508 articles filtered to prove that the source used is viable and relevant, finally determined 12 articles.  The prevalence of Covid-19 incidence in neonates from confirmed mothers was reported in some studies but there is no evidence that transmission is vertical through breast milk. SARS-CoV-2 RNA is found in some reports but there is nothing to confirm whether it is an active virus or just remnants of RNA that cannot infect. Beside RNA, Sars-Cov-2 specific antibodies were also found to protect neonates. Conclusion: Active transmission of Covid-19 vertically from breast milk has not been detected, should not be an indication of formula feeding or separation baby with mother. The findings of IgA, IgG, and IgM-specific antibodies can be passive protection, because until now no vaccination has been recommended for neonate groups.

Abstract

Gestational  Trophoblastic  Disease  (GTD)  is an abnormal placenta, composed of a spectrum of premalignant to malignant disorders. In Indonesia, GTD incidence is particularly challenging to estimate, since not all cases will be reported or recognized. It classified into hydatidose mole and gestational trophoblastic neoplasia (GTN). One of those clinicopathological classification of GTN is malignant invasive mole. It is likely to be the cause of increased maternal mortality in Indonesia if the disease is not well diagnosed and treated. We reported the case, a 28 years old woman who had a invasive mole with impending uterine rupture. She had a pervaginam bleeding symptoms since 3 weeks after post curetase due to hydatidose mole indication. She also had multiple abortus history.

Abstract

Preeclampsia is a multisystem disorder which is still the leading cause of maternal death today. The occurrence of seizures in preeclampsia (eclampsia) increases the risk of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. Therefore, seizure in preeclampsia should be prevented and should be managed accurateely. The standard therapy for managing severe preeclampsia/eclampsia is the use of an anticonvulsant that is aimed to prevent/stop seizures, prevent the recurrence of attacks, to minimize and to manage their complications, and optimize the time for the birth of the baby. On the other hand, the selection of anticonvulsants needed is still controversial, so debates and studies on the effectiveness between each anticonvulsant are necessary.Comparative research between magnesium sulfate and diazepam is widely carried out, both retrospective and prospective. Magnesium sulfate is more effective than diazepam, especially in terms of overcoming seizures, and suppressing maternal mortality and perinatal morbidity, so the choice of magnesium sulfate over diazepam is more realistic.
