Jambura Journal of English Teaching and Literature (JJETL) is a peer-reviewed journal published by the English Education Study Program, Faculty of Letters and Culture, Universitas Negeri Gorontalo, Indonesia. It is published twice a year in April and October, with submissions accepted throughout the year. Abstract

The objective of this research is to obtain the empirical data about the correlation between vocabulary achievement of Computer Engineering Network (TKJ) students and their learning habit using computer at SMKN 1 Pulubala. This research use correlation method and quantitative descriptive design to measure the correlation. This research was conducted to 67 Computer Engineering Network (TKJ) students at SMKN 1 Pulubala. After doing the research, the researcher concluded that there is a correlation between vocabulary achievement of Computer Engineering Network (TKJ) students and their learning habit using computer. It can be seen through the result of the correlation calculate using SPSS Computer for Windows show a value of 0.507. Based on the interpretation of the correlation result, it can be concluded that correlation between vocabulary achievement of Computer Engineering Network (TKJ) students and their learning habit using computer has medium correlation. The researcher has also measured the influence of correlation between vocabulary achievement of Computer Engineering Network (TKJ) students and their learning habit using computer found 91.04% in the frequency of learning habit and 80.59% in verb. Abstract

This study sought to explore the experience of students majoring in an English Department in taking the IELTS speaking practices, and whether or not they had challenges during the learning process. A qualitative approach was employed, and for collecting data a WhatsApp voice note application was utilized. Three students studying at a university in Gorontalo, Indonesia, agreed to participate voluntarily. The findings revealed that the students experienced different challenges during the IELTS speaking practices, which were grouped into five themes: (1) students prepared themselves in different ways, (2) students viewed IELTS differently, (3) students encountered some problems during the IELTS speaking practices, (4) students had issues in adjusting their answers to the test duration, and (5) students agreed that the IELTS test is important for their future. It was also found that the students still had challenges in practicing the IELTS speaking tests. For instance, they felt nervous, lacked English academic vocabulary, and even worried about using correct English grammar. The study recommends that students need to do more readings and spend a sufficient amount of time practicing with peers, so they could expand their knowledge and structure their responses well. In addition, lecturers can help students by giving authentic IELTS materials and visualizing the example of IELTS speaking tests in the classrooms.

Abstract

This article is aimed at discussing the language creativity of students of the English Department in creating English poems. The is article is based on the analysis of students who created English poems enrolling at the English Department of the State University of Gorontalo. The analysis was conducted from a linguistic perspective. The research has found that the students were creative in creating diction, repetition, and metaphor.

Abstract

The primary aim of this study is to explore the sources of English-speaking anxiety and ascertain the learners’ future expectations regarding his English language proficiency. The study was conducted at a vocational school in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, using a narrative inquiry design. A 10th-grade student from the Hospitality and Tourism Industry class was purposively invited to participate voluntarily. Data was collected through semi-structured interview and analyzed thematically. The findings revealed that sources of the student’ anxiety when speaking English included a lack of English vocabulary capacity and a lack of exposure to English as oral communication. Furthermore, the findings show that the student’s future expectation of learning English as a foreign language in the classroom include becoming familiar with speaking English and to be able to talk to foreign guests without being nervous. This study highlights the need for further investigations into effective strategies to facilitate students’ efforts in speaking English comfortably.

Abstract

In the vibrant realm of digital beauty marketing, YouTube advertisements reign supreme. This study explores the rhetorical strategies used in Maybelline's YouTube ads to entice viewers and influence their purchasing decisions. Through a stylistic approach, it analyses five carefully selected advertisements from Maybelline lip-series products starring actress model Gigi Hadid that focus on grammatical and semantics levels of stylistics. The results of this study show that the use of hyperbole, visual imagery, kinesthetic imagery, and repetition are elements that are often used in Maybelline lip-series product advertising. The findings reveal a sophisticated use of language to persuade consumers to purchase Maybelline products. The findings underline the sophisticated use of language in digital beauty marketing employed by Maybelline to capture audience attention and promote their products. This shows that language style is important in the marketing industry in shaping consumer behavior in the field of beauty advertising.

Abstract

This study aimed to explore university students’ perceptions of the implementation of board games. It sought to address the following research question: What are English Department students’ perceptions of the implementation of board games in English speaking classes? The study focused on Class E, the 2016 cohort, within an English Education Program at a university in Gorontalo. A qualitative approach was employed, and data were collected through questionnaires and supported by interviews. The study revealed that the English Department students’ perceptions were group into three main themes: learning excitement, playing the board game, and board game benefits. The students reported that learning excitement was triggered by the enjoyable feeling when learning because they can express their ideas freely with their friends, interesting features of the game such as the colors variation that psychologically influence them, also the varied topics that could enhance students’ vocabulary. Playing the board game also got positive responses from the participants, as they reported that playing the board game they need to work together. More than that, they said to win the game is not the main goal, but practice to speak in English properly and help their friends who have lack proficiency is the main point. The participants also reported the benefits of the game, they felt that they could learn English speaking skill easier than before because they felt not forced to study and learning in relax situation could increase their motivation in learning English speaking skill. This study suggests that teachers may want to consider using board game as a media to teach English.

Abstract

Translation plays a vital role in modern world. By the aid translation, people are able to overcome communication boundaries. Translating English textbook is one of the applications of translation. This research is descriptive qualitative research which aims to describe translation methods used by author in translating preface of Work in Progress English textbook. The researcher classified the data by using the theory of Newmark, (1988) which divided translation method into eight categories. This research reveals that the translation methods used in translating English textbook are free, semantic, faithful, communicative, and literal translation. The highest frequency of translation method used by the author in translating preface is free and semantic translation. The lowest frequency is literal translation.

Abstract

This study aimed to explore how students utilize YouTube as a virtual platform for developing English- speaking skills. A qualitative approached was used to capture the experiences of three participants in English Department discussing how YouTube improved their English-speaking skills. To analyse data, a thematic analysis was employed. The findings revealed three major themes, namely employing self- directed learning approach, engaging with videos for active learning, and receiving diverse content exposure for language enrichment. These shed light on the many ways that YouTube helps students improve their English speaking skills and advance our understanding of how students use the platform for foreign language learning.

Abstract

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is one of the standardized competence examinations. Before taking the thesis examination, undergraduates at Universitas Negeri Gorontalo, in particular, are mandated to take the TOEFL. This research intends to examine how English majors in the English Department perceive the TOEFL exam. To collect data, semi structured interview protocols were done, and data were analysed qualitatively. Findings suggest that while it poses some challenges, TOEFL helps students in applying for jobs. This study implies that it is necessary to ensure that improvement in teaching the test in the classroom setting remains available.

Abstract

This present study intended to examine how is the correlation between students’ multiple intelligences and students’ Achievement in English Speaking Subject. This research was conducted within the English language Education Study Programme at a university in the Province of Gorontalo with 50 students’ year 2021 as sample which were chosen randomly. The instruments used were the Multiple Intelligence questioner, and interview, as being said this study were using both quantitative and qualitative methods. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics the results from Pearson Correlation of students’ intelligence and achievement variables. Based on the data analysis, it was found between two variables was 0.464, results showed that medium correlation existed between multiple intelligences and Students’ speaking Achievement. This indicates that multiple intelligences did have affect toward students’ speaking achievement. Although, seems that there was not the only factor that affects achievement. Intrapersonal, the leading intelligence type, and musical intelligence was the least common intelligence type employed by the students who participated in this research.
